Before Ed Sheeran became the Grammy-winning and 150 million album-selling Ed Sheeran, he was just another struggling artist. He was playing in small clubs, knocking on doors and being told no over and over again — following a seemingly impossible dream.
But Sheeran decided to take a risk on himself, buying a one-way ticket to Los Angeles in 2010 after booking one gig (特约演奏). Looking for other gigs led to playing on Jamie Foxx’s radio show and to using the recording studio in Foxx’s home for free. And sleeping on Foxx’s couch (长沙发).
“Within a month,” Sheeran said, “of going there, with zero confidence, and ending up in one of the biggest movie stars in the world’s house, recording ... in my mind, I was like, ‘I must have something.’ So, going back to England, I had this charged-up battery ... and started making records, doing tours all over ...”
Staying the course in the face of struggle and rejection (拒绝) is hard.
That’s where Foxx stepped in for Sheeran. “‘You’re great,’” Foxx recalled telling Sheeran. “I said, ‘I know you don’t have anywhere to go, so you can take a rest here.’”
Most people give up in the face of adversity (逆境) — even if they are smarter, better connected, more talented or better funded than you. Success often comes down to perseverance (坚持). You can’t win if you aren’t around at the end.
You don’t have to offer your couch. But you can be kind. You can offer a word of encouragement to a struggling friend. You can offer a little help to a struggling connection. Behind every startup is a person with a dream: a person living on couches and depending on strangers being kind. Once in a while, be one of those strangers. Because a little help may be all a person needs to keep going.
24. How was Ed Sheeran before he went to Los Angeles

A. was satisfied with his achievements B. was uncertain about his future
C. was confident about himself D. was upset with Foxx
27. What does the author want to share in paragraph 6

C. Two heads are better than one. D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C
My story starts like so many writers’: making stories as soon as I could hold a pencil. By seven, I was making up “novels” weekly and forcing them upon my long-suffering aunts. While other kids dreamed of being astronauts, I hesitated between “author” and “veterinarian”.
Then, at fifteen, I saw the first Lord of the Rings film in the cinema. It struck me like lightning. When I discovered it was adapted from a book and that entire worlds could be built with words, my path was set — to be a writer in the future. I immediately dug out my glitter gel pens and got back to writing.
But growing up meant growing doubtful. “Be practical,” everyone said. So I became the cliche: the writer who studied psychology (心理学) instead. Academic work in university took over every minute of my life, leaving my stories untouched and coated in dust.
After graduation, the floodgates opened. Characters flooded back, whispering I forgot how much I needed that. Over a period of time, I wrote crazily until my new job got even busier and my personal life broke down. Then I found myself pulling boxes of half-finished works into my childhood bedroom at twenty-six. This time, the fall was severe. That slump went on for years.
Then came the babies. When I held my first child in my arms, tired for lack of sleep and aching all over, I got up the courage to ask myself. “Why haven’t I become a writer yet ” How absurd (荒唐的) that was! Here I was, busy changing diapers (尿布), yet the old hunger rushed back louder than the baby. So I fought for it — writing down outlines with a purple pen while feeding babies, reading books during naptimes, stealing twenty bleary-eyed minutes at midnight. I kept going.
Now, I’m more tired than ever. More frightened too. But the words are here to stay. It turns out that my greatest mistake wasn’t in stopping writing, but in believing I could ever stop writing.
28. What made the author decide to become a writer
A. Her curiosity about surroundings B. A habit.
C. Her interest in novels. D. A film.
29. Why did the author stop writing during university
A. She found she wanted to be an astronaut. B. She preferred psychology to writing.
C. Her classmates doubted her ability D. She was too busy with studies to write.
30. What does the underlined word “slump” in paragraph 4 mean
A. A period of great productivity. B. A time of strong determination.
C. A state of inactivity in performance. D. A sudden increase in creative energy.
31. What can we learn from the author’s experience
A. It is possible to balance writing with life responsibilities.
B. Never give up on your true passion.
C. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
D. A good book can change people’s lives unexpectedly.
D
What if everything happens for a reason Burnt toast theory, a modern view on this classic idea, suggests that every little inconvenience we experience in our day-to-day lives happens for a bigger reason.
Imagine you accidentally burn your toast before leaving for work. According to burnt toast theory, this tiny inconvenience can cause a domino effect (多米诺效应). Your morning gets delayed by three to five minutes—just enough time to leave the house later than usual and avoid a potential car accident. Or perhaps you catch a later train, missing an awkward encounter with someone you don’t intend to see. You might even meet someone new whom you wouldn’t have otherwise met, leading to a friendship or romantic connection.
When we feel like things are outside our control, that can be scary. The burnt toast theory can help some people let go of their need for control and take negative situations more positively.
However, while maintaining a positive mindset can be beneficial, over-optimism can lead to “poisonous positivity”. When we only allow ourselves to focus on positive thoughts, we are denying ourselves the chance to properly deal with challenges and difficult situations to better ourselves, focusing on creating a false positive fa ade (假象) instead. By constantly avoiding negative experiences, we might ignore their real impact on us and fail to acknowledge when we’re struggling. It can make us feel worse about ourselves, and may lead to pushing down negative feelings or experiences, and refusing to acknowledge or deal with them fully.
Instead of focusing purely on positive thinking, working towards developing a growth mindset may be more helpful. You don’t always have to look for life’s silver linings, or even the meaning behind a little burnt toast. Sometimes things happen, and they suck. But as long as we take time to acknowledge how these things make us feel, and recognize that we can’t always control everything around us, we can still work towards improving ourselves, and how we handle life’s unexpected challenges—and that’s what really matters.
32. What can be inferred from the burnt toast theory
A. Lost in the east, gained in the west. B. Life is a process, not destination.
C. Lost time will never be found again. D. Life is full of endless challenges.
33. Which can be an outcome from “poisonous positivity”
A. Inability to control emotions. B. Decline in physical health.
C. Loss of chances to grow. D. Failure to acknowledge others.
34. Which can be seen as a growth mindset mentioned in the last paragraph
A. Avoiding pushing others too hard. B. Finding reasons for failure.
C. Keeping a positive mindset and working hard. D. Accepting life and making it better.
35. Which is the best possible title for the text
A. Burn Toast Theory: More than Positivity B. Burn Toast Theory: How to Live Actively
C. Bum Toast Theory: Find a True Self D. Bum Toast Theory: Lead a Positive Life

He turned up at every door of the house, and shouted the words of “Happy New Year” in an excited voice. After a quick breakfast, he hopped along the street like a happy bird, greeted and repeated the words to those he met.
When he came back, his father gave him 50 dollars, saying he could buy whatever he had been wishing for. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some interesting books that he had seen at the bookstore. He thanked his father and danced out of the house again with a light heart, wanting to buy those books.
As he ran down the street, he noticed a poor German family, the father, mother, and three children trembling with cold. “I wish you a happy New Year,” said Edward, as he was happily passing on. The man took a look at the happy boy and shook his head sadly.
Edward stopped and said, “It seems that you do not belong to this country” The man again shook his head, a confused expression appeared over his face, for he could not understand or speak English.
But the poor man pointed to his mouth, and to the children with hungry looks, as if to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.”
Edward quickly understood that these poor people were in difficult situation.

Stand Up and Exercise, Everybody!
Everybody! Are you tired of sitting in class all day How about incorporating some physical activities into your daily routine One great option is the “Stand Up and Stretch” exercise. This simple routine involves standing up from your desk, stretching your arms, legs and back, and taking a few deep breaths. It’s a quick and easy way to get your blood flowing and re-energize your body and mind. This exercise is recommended for several reasons.

So, next time you feel a bit sluggish during class, remember to stand up and stretch! It’s a small change that can make a big difference in your day.
【答案】Paragraph 1:
He took out his dollars, and gave them all to the man. How their eyes sparkled with gratitude! They said something in their language, which might mean, “You are doing me a great favor, and I am very grateful to you.” The man was so moved that he stood there, failing to say any words. At the same time, Edward saw a bright smile spread across the man’s face. He smiled back at the father, waved goodbye to the family and went home delightedly.
Paragraph 2:
When Edward went home, his father asked what book he had bought. He hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up. Then he told the story to his father. “I have bought no books,” said he, “I can wait for my books till next New Year.” “My dear boy,” said his father, “here are a dozen of books. I give them to you, more as a reward for your goodness of heart than as a New Year gift.” It was on that very moment that Edward realized a small act of kindness may be powerful enough to make a huge difference.
1. 【原文】M: Excuse me, I got lost. I took a bus to city hall, but I can’t find the place.
W: This is the concert hall, not city hall. To go there, you should take the bus at Grand Hotel over there.
2. 【原文】M: Can I help you
W: I’m looking for a size twelve dress.
M: Oh, let me see. An eight, a ten. Ah, you’re lucky. I have the prettiest dress here in a twelve. Why don’t you try it on
3.【原文】W: Do you think you can take care of everything in the office today
M: No problem. Just go home and take a rest. If there is anything I feel I cannot handle, I will call you.
4. 【原文】W: We have a half day tour, a full day tour and an evening tour. Which one would you like
M: What is the schedule of the half day tour
W: It sets out at 8:30 a.m. and returns at 2 p.m.
5. 【原文】M: Now what seems to be the trouble, Mrs. Stevens
W: I’ve been very dizzy lately and last night I had some chest pain.
M: Don’t worry. Let me have a look.
6【原文】W: Wow, that was a great match. I really like watching tennis games.
M: Me too. I think tennis is an exciting sport.
W: I think so. Do you play tennis John
M: Yes, but not very well. Do you play
W: A little. How about a game on Tuesday afternoon
M: Sure.
7 【原文】M: Mrs. White, I’m afraid we have to put you on a strict diet. From now on, you are going to have to stay away from salty food.
W: Does that mean I can’t have any more fast food
M: Right. You can’t have any fried food or steaks.

W: Well, Daniel, have you ever felt nervous on stage
M: Sure. Do you remember that play I was in a few years ago I knew my lines, but I was terrified to have to recite them in front of an audience. As soon as I saw the crowd of people down there, my heart beat so fast that I was unable to say a single word.
W: That’s how I feel just thinking about the spelling competition next week.
M: I didn’t know you made it to the finals.
W: I’m worried I’ll get nervous and freeze on stage. I might forget how to spell everything, even my own name. I don’t know what to do.
M: Nancy, I know that you’re not going to forget how to spell your name. I’ll help you get through this. I’ll go to the school hall with you to practice. Then I’ll teach you an exercise my baseball coach taught me. Believe me. It works.
W: I feel much better now. Thanks, Daniel.
9【原文】W: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, today we have invited Professor Stone to talk about the role of elderly people in our society. Welcome to our show, Professor Stone.
M: To begin with, I’d like to tell a story from my own life. Several years ago when my grandparents were well into their eighties, they were no longer able to care for themselves very well. My grandfather was afraid of leaving the only home they had known for the past sixty years. The idea of having to sell their home and move into a retirement home was an extremely painful experience for them. Indeed old age for them and many older Americans can mean not only the possible failure of one’s health, but the loss of identity and self-worth.
W: Yes, it’s true. What do you have to say about the problem of old age
M: Many experts have given talks here that have focused on the medical care and the development of public services for senior citizens. Today I’d like to focus my comments on the meaningful roles the elderly can play and should play in our society.
10 【原文】W: Talking about personal relationships. Well, I’d naturally think of my relationship with my mother. Whenever I need help, my mother is always there for me. She often tells me that I can be anyone I want, as long as I’m confident of myself. She sees my talent and pushes me to do the best I possibly can. As I was growing up, we were often on the move. I had to admit that moving so often made me feel lonely. But my mother did everything she could to help me feel happy. In fact, so much traveling was really a good thing because it made us close. I respect my mother so much as she never treats me as a child, but as an equal. She gives me the freedom to make mistakes and to learn from them all. Unlike friendships that can fade or break, I know I’ll always be connected to my mother no matter what I face. She is not just a role model, but someone I love.
