e.g. Stern put Travis in charge of the research team.

as if从句所表达的内容完全与实际情况相反或者纯粹是一种假设时，通常使用虚拟语气。
本句表示与过去事实相反，谓语动词用had done。

e.g. The boy listened as if he had turned to stone.
这个男孩听得很入迷，就好像变成了一块石头。
Gray was behaving as if nothing had happened.
Gray表现得好像什么事情也没发生过。
1) 如果as if从句所表示的内容被看作是事实或者有可能是真实的，就要使用陈述语气。如：
He walks as if he is drunk.
It seems as if we shall have to walk.
2) 当as if从句的主语跟主句的主语相一致，并且从句中包含充当谓语的be时，从句的主语和be就常常省略，直接跟动词-ing形式、动词-ed形式、形容词、介词短语、不定式等。如：
Mike paused as if expecting Helen to speak.
The young man started as if awakened from some dream.
He came slowly, firmly holding the handrails as if afraid to fall.
He looked round as if in search of something.
