For many, Chinese characters seem like difficult symbols. However, Lena, a 20-year-old American college student, views them in a unique way. To her, each character has its own story. She pictures “ren” (person) as a cat’s face, and “ceng” (once) as an angry robot.
Lena gained popularity when she spent only 30 minutes drawing “ceng” and posted it on Rednote (or Xiaohongshu). Amazingly, this simple drawing got 40,000 likes overnight. Now, her creative artworks raise discussions about language, art, and cultural exchange.
Growing up in a diverse community with many Asians, Lena had different languages and cultures around her. “As a child, I had Chinese friends. I was attracted to their names on lunch boxes. This language was so new to me, completely different from Western languages,” Lena remembered. This early curiosity remained with her and reappeared in college during a US-China relations course, which fuelled her passion for modern Chinese culture.
Deep in Rednote, Lena noticed more characters that looked like different objects. She describes herself as imaginative and sharp-eyed, often noticing details that others miss.
Besides drawing, Lena translates all her posts into Chinese to show respect to her followers. Her efforts have helped her make Chinese friends online, chatting about daily life and food. Some followers said Lena understands the beauty of Chinese characters better than many Chinese. “It’s because you’re used to them,” Lena replied, adding the opposite is also true. For example, she learned from Chinese friends that “orz” looks like a person bowing in apology, but it means nothing in English. “It’s something I never thought of. That’s the result of a non-native looking at unfamiliar characters,” she said.
As Lena plans to share more character-inspired art on Rednote, her story shows a truth: language is more than words; it’s about connection and understanding the world from others’ perspectives.
4.How did Lena become popular on Rednote
A.By sharing her daily life in China. B.By posting drawings of Chinese characters.
C.By translating English articles into Chinese. D.By having online chats with Chinese netizens.
5.What deepened Lena’s interest in modern Chinese culture
A.Her Chinese friends. B.Using Rednote.
C.A US-China relations course. D.Drawing Chinese characters.
6.Why did Lena mention the example “orz”
A.To explain learning difficulty. B.To analyze grammar differences.
C.To prove followers’ over-praise. D.To show non-natives’ unique views.
7.What message does the story convey
A.Social media brings users popularity. B.Artistic drawings help Chinese learning.
C.Non-native speakers understand culture better. D.Language connects cultures through creativity.
Most people see chocolate as a tasty treat. Dark chocolate, which has more cocoa, is often said to be a healthier choice. Some even claim it helps with high blood pressure and making the mind sharper. Many studies often paid for by chocolate companies, suggest these possible benefits.
But careful scientific research tells us something different. The supposed health benefits are mainly due to chemicals called flavanols (黄烷醇), which are found in cocoa. High-quality experiments have tested flavanol capsules and foods rich in flavanols, such as cocoa, tea, and berries. While some short-term studies show small benefits, the results overall have been inconsistent. Also, these studies were too short to show long-term effects.
Some observational studies found that people who eat more flavanols tend to be healthier. For example, they may have a lower risk of diabetes (糖尿病). However, these people might also have other healthy habits or higher incomes, allowing them to buy better food.
A major research project called COSMOS started in 2015 to find clearer answers. It provided older adults with daily cocoa containing 500 mg of flavanols for several years. The results showed that flavanols did not lower the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, or memory loss. Still, they did reduce heart-related deaths by 27%.
Even with this one positive result, it doesn’t mean dark chocolate is good for your heart. To get 500mg of flavanols from chocolate, you would need to eat a lot. A better way to get flavanols is from unsweetened cocoa powder (粉末), cacao nibs (可可豆碎), or foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and green tea. For example, two apples and a cup of strawberries provide about 500mg of flavanols. So do two to three cups of green tea.
In the end, many health claims about dark chocolate may come more from marketing and people’s hopes than from strong science. If you like chocolate, it’s okay to enjoy it occasionally — but you don’t need to pick the darkest kind just for health benefits.
8.What is the function of Paragraph 1
A.To introduce a common belief. B.To present a research finding.
C.To challenge a popular viewpoint. D.To describe some proven benefits.
9.What does the underlined word “inconsistent” mean in Paragraph 2
A.Powerful. B.Unreliable. C.Unrelated. D.Hopeful.
10.How do flavanols affect health according to the project
A.They might prevent diabetes in a way. B.They were proved to improve memory.
C.They worked better than cocoa powder. D.They reduced deaths from heart problems.

For as long as there have been gifts, we have naturally made choices based on the personality and tastes of the recipient (接受者). In fact, a recent online survey conducted by psychologists Lauren Human and Lara Aknin confirmed this tendency. However, what if we have been wrong all along and might actually benefit from turning things around
Curious about this possibility, Human and Aknin wondered whether this common approach to giving gifts missed an important way we connect with others. So they sent 78 volunteers into a shopping centre before Mother’s Day. Half were told to buy a card that “reveals (揭示) your knowledge of the recipient” while the others set out to buy a card that “reveals your true self”. After buying the card, the givers who had thought partly of themselves reported feeling emotionally closer to their mothers than those who focused only on the recipient.
To find out how that approach went down with recipients, the psychologists did another test, asking more than 100 students to choose a song on iTunes for a friend, partner or family member. Each half of the group received the same instructions as the card buyers. Results revealed that recipients of songs that revealed something of the givers felt more connected than those who received purely recipient-focused gifts. This proved balanced gift-giving builds stronger relationships.
Human and Aknin suggest this finding might apply to all gifts. “If building stronger social connections is the underlying (潜在的) goal of a gift — and surely it should be — then we may well be advised to offer more self-expressive gifts.” In short, for a present to be truly meaningful, you need to give away a bit of yourself, even if there is a risk that the gift might not fully meet the recipient’s practical needs or tastes.
But a note of warning here: what the research does not examine is the potential risk in repeated, thoughtless giver-centered giving, which, according to Human and Aknin “could signal selfishness” — and nobody wants to reveal that about themselves.
12.What is learned from the Mother’s Day card test
A.Many pick gifts with the recipient in mind. B.Many choose gifts based on their own tastes.
C.Gifts considering the giver benefit the giver. D.Gifts revealing the recipient affect the giver.
13.Why should we give gifts according to the text
A.To make the giver’s life happier. B.To meet the recipient’s practical needs.
C.To show knowledge of the recipient. D.To establish stronger social connections.
14.How do the researchers view self-expression in gift-giving
A.Positive. B.Neutral. C.Critical. D.Uncaring.
15.What’s the purpose of the text
A.To suggest better ways of gift giving. B.To show how gifts build relationships.
C.To stress the importance of gift knowledge. D.To discuss common gift-buying mistakes.
Many senior high students share the same goal: improving their English language skills.
16 Here’s a step-by-step approach (方法) that works for everyone.
Know about your purpose.
Start by figuring out why you want to improve your English skills. For struggling ones, it’s important to master classroom dialogues to pass exams and build confidence. For top students, English fluency develops academic excellence and prepares them for cross-cultural communication. 17

For struggling students this could mean practicing role-playing simple conversations with classmates. 18 . In spite of your current level, view these exercises as stepping stones to build confidence for broader English use. Seek opportunities to apply your skills in real-world settings where English is used.
19
Take advantage of language-learning apps, online courses, and English-speaking communities to build daily habits. Spend 10 minutes memorizing vocabulary with a learning app after breakfast. Take a 10-minute online grammar course after lunch. Watch short English videos for 10 minutes after dinner to practice listening. Whatever you choose to do, the key is to keep the habits you’ve formed.
Celebrate small wins.
Language learning takes time, so celebrate your progress! Treat yourself to a chocolate after remembering 10 new words, or share your achievements when you finish daily practice. 20 Each improvement, whether it’s mastering a grammar rule or reaching your desired score, is a step toward success.
A.Fall into daily habits.
B.Improve online learning skills.
C.This builds confidence and keeps you going.
D.Follow these key steps to improve your reading skills.
E.Having a strong “why” keeps you going when challenges appear.

根据第二段中“So they sent 78 volunteers into a shopping centre before Mother’s Day. Half were told to buy a card that “reveals (揭示) your knowledge of the recipient” while the others set out to buy a card that “reveals your true self”. After buying the card, the givers who had thought partly of themselves reported feeling emotionally closer to their mothers than those who focused only on the recipient.
根据第四段中“If building stronger social connections is the underlying (潜在的) goal of a gift — and surely it should be — then we may well be advised to offer more self-expressive gifts. (如果建立更强的社会联系是礼物的潜在目标——而且它确实应该是——那么我们很可能会被建议提供更多表达自我的礼物)”可知,送礼物的潜在目标应该是建立更强的社会联系。故选D项。
14.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Human and Aknin suggest this finding might apply to all gifts. (Human和Aknin认为这一发现可能适用于所有礼物。“如果建立更强的社会联系是礼物的潜在目标——而且它确实应该是——那么我们很可能会被建议提供更多表达自我的礼物。”简而言之,要让礼物真正有意义,你需要付出一点自我,即使这或许意味着礼物可能无法完全符合收礼人的实际需求或品味)”可知,研究人员认为送礼时自我表达可以建立更强的社会联系,使礼物更有意义,所以他们对自我表达持积极态度。故选A项。
通读全文,结合第一段中“However, what if we have been wrong all along and might actually benefit from turning things around (然而,如果我们一直以来的做法都是错误的,而实际上从扭转局面中获益呢 )”和第四段中“Human and Aknin suggest this finding might apply to all gifts. “If building stronger social connections is the underlying (潜在的) goal of a gift — and surely it should be — then we may well be advised to offer more self-expressive gifts.” (Human和Aknin认为这一发现可能适用于所有礼物。“如果建立更强的社会联系是礼物的潜在目标——而且它确实应该是——那么我们很可能会被建议提供更多表达自我的礼物”)”可知,文章主要讨论了送礼时考虑自我表达可能比单纯考虑接受者更能增进双方关系,并引用了心理学家的实验结果来支持这一观点,所以文章目的是为读者提供更好的送礼方式建议。故选A项。
