Eliza, 17, a music performance student at Bexhill College, has been named among the 39 finalists for the Global Youth Awards 2025. She previously took singing lessons in Broad Oak with local vocal coach Laura Westcott, saying the experience was life-changing. “I’ve been loving this year and what it brings — it allows me to explore myself through music,” she said. “This is just the beginning, and I’m excited to grow more with every performance, through the highs and the lows.”
Laura Westcott is a classically trained singer and journalist who turned her own struggles with stage fright and anxiety into a force for good in the music community. After earning a degree in music and performing, she redirected her experience toward helping others by founding Music For Mental Wealth in 2017. The organization creates safe spaces for young artists to share the emotional meaning behind their songs while promoting open dialogue about mental health, helping them gain confidence and emotional balance.
“Eliza was always full of creative energy and purpose,” Laura said. “Her songwriting comes from a place of honesty, and she’s learning to trust her own voice — that’s where the magic happens.”
Now in its 13th year, the Global Youth Awards honour young people aged 11-25 making positive change across fields such as climate action, mental health, education, and the arts. This year’s forest-themed event introduces a new Songwriting Competition Award, spotlighting music as a tool for unity and social impact.
Tanith Harding, CEO of The Legacy Project, which runs the awards, said: “This year’s finalists have already achieved so much, proving that compassion (同情), creativity, and innovation are the bases of true leadership.”
For communities across East Sussex area, Eliza’s success is a proud reflection of the musical talent being locally cared for and protected while they are growing and developing — proof that even from small villages like Broad Oak, young voices can reach a global stage.

Right now, groups of Icelanders are taking to the streets late at night, armed with cardboard boxes and flashlights, in search of the baby Atlantic puffins (海鹦). Once caught, these birds will spend the next few hours with their hunters, before being released from clifftops (悬崖顶) after sunrise. And this annual tradition has become one of the most fascinating wildlife release missions on the planet.
Each year from late August to early September, the “Puffling patrol (巡逻队)” takes over Vestmannaeyjab r, a 4,600-inhabitant town on Heimaey Island, southern Iceland. The island is famous for its volcanic landscapes, cliffs, and thousands of Atlantic puffins.
However, since the town’s development, human impact has deeply harmed these birds. Over 30 years, Iceland’s puffin population has halved, and the population is now listed as critically endangered by the IUCN. Puffins, which mate for life, lay just one egg yearly, making them highly sensitive to disturbances. Normally, baby puffins — pufflings — emerge from dark caves after six weeks, guided to sea by moonlight. But town lights confuse them; they fly off cliffs in the wrong direction, ending up being trapped on docks, parking lots, and roofs.
And because of their short wings adapted for underwater diving, baby puffins have poor take-off ability in flight, leaving them facing danger on the ground from cats and other enemies.
Last year alone, the Puffling patrol saved some 3,000 birds: tagged (标记), recorded, and released from western cliffs. Any injured birds are then taken to the Puffin Rescue for treatment. At the release site, some birds need a helping hand to be launched into the air, and then the young birds can avoid crashing back into rocks.
In a 2024 study, researchers first demonstrated artificial light’s role in misguiding puffins, which spend most of their lives out at sea. So far, attempts to help the pufflings redirect away from the town haven’t been successful, so the Puffling patrol looks likely to continue each year, as it has done for generations.
8. What is the “Puffling patrol” mainly for
A. Recording data of baby puffins.
B. Rescuing trapped baby puffins.
C. Relocating baby puffins for treatment.
D Building homes for baby puffins.
9. What can we know about puffins from the text
A. They have small habitats.
B. They are afraid of humans.
C. Their population is growing.
D. Their reproduction rate is low.
10. Why does the author mention the 2024 study in the last paragraph
A. To prove the success of the Puffing patrol.
B. To explain why town lights affect pufflings.
C. To confirm the necessity of the Puffing patrol.
D. To suggest a new way to protect pufflings.
11. What is the best title of the text
A. The Endangered Atlantic Puffins
B. Vestmannaeyjab r: A Puffin Town
C. Puffing patrol: Guardians of Lost Pufflings
D. Iceland’s tradition of Protecting Puffin Habits

Ariel Procaccia has thought a lot about how to cut a cake over the last 15 years. As the father of three children, he knows how hard it is to divide a birthday cake to everyone’s satisfaction. But it’s also because Procaccia’s work focuses on exploring the mathematical rules for dividing stuff up fairly. One way to do that is to think abstractly about dessert.
For decades, researchers have been asking the seemingly simple question of how to cut a cake fairly. The answer reaches far beyond birthday parties. A mathematical problem at its heart, cake cutting connects strict reasoning to real-world issues of fairness, and so attracts not only mathematicians, but also social scientists, economists and more. “It’s a very elegant model in which you can distill what fairness really is, and reason about it,” Procaccia says.
The simplest approach is called the “divider-chooser” method, where one person cuts the cake into two equal pieces in his view, and the other person picks first. Each receives a piece that they feel is as valuable as the other’s. But when personal preferences are taken into account, even the easiest rule becomes complicated. Suppose Alice and Bob are to divide a cake, and Alice knows Bob prefers chocolate, she may knowingly divide the cake unequally so the smaller piece contains more chocolate. Then Bob will choose according to his preference, and Alice will get the larger piece. Both of them are satisfied with what they get, but the meaning of fairness changes in this situation.
The cake is a symbol for any divisible good. When cake-cutting principles are employed to settle disagreements, they are potentially helping the world find solutions. Procaccia has used fair division algorithms (算法) to model food distribution. Social scientist Haris Aziz is exploring situations ranging from how to divide up daily tasks to how to best schedule doctors’ shifts in hospitals.
Even after decades of investigation, cake cutting isn’t like a simple jigsaw puzzle (拼图) with a well-defined solution. Instead, over time, it has evolved into a kind of mathematical sandbox, a constructive playground that brings together abstract proofs and easy applications. The more researchers explore it, the more there is to explore.
12. What does the underlined word “distill” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Get the essence of. B. Find the opposite of.
C Keep the focus on. D. Reduce the impact on.
13. What can we learn about fairness from the example given in paragraph 3
A. Its standard is stable. B. It prevents unequal division.
C. Its concept is complex. D. It dominates personal preferences.
14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about concerning cake cutting
A. The application of its rules. B. The details of its process.
C. The problems it produces. D. The harmony it symbolizes.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Who Benefits Most from Fairness
B. How Has Fairness Changed over Time
C. What Method Works Best in Cake-cutting
D. Why are Researchers so Interested in Cake-cutting

There’s one place where sportsmanship has incredible power — youth sports. Kids can learn life lessons that’ll shape their values — things like teamwork, fairness and handling pressure. And when coaches, parents, and teammates emphasize sportsmanship, they’re helping create well-rounded individuals, not just good athletes. Young players truly begin to understand that how they treat others is just as important as how they play. ____20____
A. That’s what makes you respected.
B. It’s not all about champions and records.

Even before I finished dialing. I somehow knew I’d made a mistake.
“You got the wrong number!” an old male voice snapped (厉声说) before the line went dead. Puzzled, I dialed again. “I said you got the wrong number!” came the voice. Once more the phone clicked in my ear.
At that time, I worked for the New York City Police Department. A policeman is trained to be curious and concerned. So I dialed a third time.
“Is this you again ” the man said. “Yeah, it’s me,” I answered. “I was wondering how you knew I had the wrong number before l even said anything The only thing I can think of is...nobody ever calls you.”
“You got it.” The phone went dead for the third time.
Smiling, I dialed the man back. “Well,if nobody ever calls you, I thought maybe I should. ” At last, I had got through. Now he was curious. I told him who I was and asked who he was.
“My name is Adolf Meth. I’m 88 years old, and I haven’t had this many wrong numbers in one day in 20 years!” We both laughed. We talked for 10 minutes.
Everyone Adolf had been close to had died. Then we discovered we had something in common: he’d worked for the New York City Police Department for nearly 40 years. Telling me about his days there, he seemed interesting even friendly.
I called Adolf the following afternoon and several days later. He shared fascinating memories of World Wars I and II, the Hindenburg disaster, and more.
I was not just being kind to a lonely man. Talking to Adolf was important to me because I, too, had a big gap in my life. Raised in orphanages (孤儿院), I never had a father. Gradually, Adolf took on a kind of fatherly importance to me. I talked about my job and college courses, which I attended at night. Adolf warmed to the role of consultant. He often listened patiently and offered advice filled with the wisdom of a lifetime.
