Today is World Teachers’ Day. To celebrate this special day, I want to express my sincere thanks to Mr. Agba Bio Seriki, my high school biology teacher.
One special moment in his class left me with an unforgettable impression. During a biology lesson he mentioned a fact that really stuck with me. He said, “The human brain is at its best for learning and taking in new information from the age of 5 to 25. After that, our brain’s ability to learn new things starts to go down. Instead, it focuses more on using the knowledge we already have.”
When I heard this, I was really shocked. I was only 16 at the time, but that class made me feel like I was racing against time. I developed a deep interest in reading. Whenever I had free time, I would go to the school library and explore (探索) different kinds of books. I also tried to talk to older people who had books I really wanted to read. I asked them about their thoughts and experiences about those books.
This strong thirst for knowledge followed me to Bayero University Kano. At university, I read all kinds of books on different subjects. I read philosophy (哲学) books, which made me think about big questions like why we are here. Psychology books helped me understand how our minds work. History books told me about the past, and sociology and political science books showed me how society and governments are formed. I even explored other areas of knowledge.
By the time I turned 25, I had gained (获得) a wealth of knowledge, yet I still felt there was so much more to explore. I’m thankful to Mr. Seriki. He made me realize the importance of making the most of every chance to learn. Maybe he doesn’t remember that class, but his words have changed my life completely. Because of him, I keep learning and trying to be better.

A group of three students in grades four and five from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, amazed people with their smart mini-garden system powered by a water wheel at the STEM Day event for elementary school students. The students, Pham Ngo Duc Khang, Nguyen Vo Gia Phuc, and Huynh Huu Hoang Nam, are from Nguyen Thi Dinh Elementary School in District 7. Their smart garden model was one of many STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) projects presented at the “Green City” event.
Khang explained their smart garden model, “The water pump (水泵) brings water to the hydroponic (水培) system, while the wastewater flows into (流入) the water wheel, which produces energy.” This system allows plants to grow in a small space, making it possible for city environments where there is not enough land for plants.
The students came up with the idea for the smart garden model based on the lessons they had learned in class. Many homes in the city don’t have enough space for a traditional garden, so they wanted to create a way for people to grow plants at home. These three primary school students realised that with the right design, it would be possible to make a small, self-sustaining (自给自足的) garden that didn’t require a lot of space or resources. The team spent a week developing the product with guidance from their teacher, Tran Thanh Truong. He said the students utilised their knowledge of science, technology, math, and art to build the advanced garden system. He also praised their creativity and teamwork in completing such a difficult project at a young age.
The smart garden model fits perfectly with the theme (主题) of the event, “Green City”, and meets the needs of citizens. STEM courses in schools are a great and helpful method of education. Projects like this one help students use what they have learned in the classroom to real-world challenges.
Nguyen Bao Quoc, director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, said that the educational programme has improved with the addition of STEM courses. STEM education helps students enrich their knowledge, improve problem-solving skills, and develop creative thinking. The STEM Day event was designed to encourage creativity, as well as improve STEM learning methods among teachers and students.
5. What is a characteristic of the mini-garden system
A. It can power itself. B. Its size is changeable.
C. It needs no electricity. D. It is connected to the Internet.
6. What do we know about the making of the system
A. It was the teacher’s idea. B. It was influenced by a real garden.
C. It was based on knowledge after class. D. It was completed with the teacher’s help.
7. What does the underlined word “utilised” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Improved. B. Shared. C. Used. D. Acquired.
8. Why does the author mention the words of Nguyen Bao Quoc
A. To suggest how STEM education works.
B. To explain why students built the system.
C. To encourage students to take STEM classes.
D. To show the importance of STEM learning at school.
