BEST FICTION Books For You Have you been looking for fantastic novels for your spare time Don’t look further! Here!
The Life of the Mind Dorothy is an English professor. In Christine Small Wood's debut (首次亮相的) novel, Dorothy tells amusing observations on her ever collapsing (崩塌) universe. Struggling in her field, Dorothy wonders how her once attainable goals came to feel impossible. Her endlessly amusing thoughts gives way to a satisfying examination of ambition and freedom. Klara and the Sun The eighth novel from Nobel Prize-winning author Kazuo lshiguro follows a robot-like “Artificial Friend” named Klara, who sits in a store and waits to be purchased. When she becomes the companion of a girl aged 14 who falls ill, Klara puts her observations of the world to the test. In exploring the dynamic between the Al and the teen, Ishiguro presents a narrative that asks upsetting questions about humanity technology and purpose.
Afterparties Anthony Veasna So’s exciting debut collection, made up of nine stories, was published after his death at 28. It reveals a portrait of a Cambodian American community in California. From a story about two sisters reflecting on their father to another about a high school badminton coach stuck in the past, the writer’s narratives offer a thoughtful view into the community that shaped him. While describing the tensions his characters experience with humor and care, he also reflects on immigration and identity. Open Water In his first novel, Caleb Azumah Nelson tells a striking love story about young Black artists in London. It mainly deals with a photographer who has fallen for a dancer. Nelson does well in writing young love, noticing the small and seemingly meaningless moments full of desires. He celebrates the art that has shaped his characters’ lives while questioning the unjust world that surrounds them.

Amsterdam stands as an excellent city for cycling due to a combination of natural advantages and thoughtful urban planning. Its flat landscape makes cycling exceptionally convenient and requires little physical effort, encouraging people of all ages to choose bicycles for their daily travel. Furthermore, the city has developed a remarkable infrastructure (基础设施) to support this lifestyle. Specialized bicycle paths run alongside most streets in the city center, ensuring a safer and smoother journey for cyclists. Enough bicycle parking spaces add to the overall convenience. As a result of these factors, cycling has become deeply rooted in the local culture — an impressive 38% of all trips are made by bike, earning Amsterdam the nickname “the City of Bicycles.”
The city’s strong cycling culture has historical roots, specially the “white bikes” initiative that emerged in the 1960s. A group of cycling enthusiasts proposed an ambitious idea: banning cars from the city center and promoting bicycles as the primary mode of transport. They believed this would save energy, reduce pollution, and offer free public transport. To realize this vision, they painted hundreds of bicycles white and distributed them across Amsterdam for public use. The concept was simple — anyone could take a bike for a short trip and leave it for the next user at their destination. Unfortunately, this early system faced a major challenge: within weeks, most bicycles were stolen, causing the project to fail.
However, the spirit of the “white bikes” was revived (复苏) in 1999 with a new system. The new-generation shared bicycles, though no longer white but painted in bright colors, were equipped with computer tracking technology. Users needed a special card to unlock a bike from a fixed parking station and were required to return it to another designated station near their destination. This improved model addressed previous issues and proved successful.
Thanks to the persistent efforts and creative ideas of its citizens, Amsterdam now enjoys the benefits of a cycling-friendly environment, including reduced traffic congestion and cleaner air. The evolution of the “white bike” concept demonstrates how innovative thinking can transform urban transport, making cities more livable and sustainable.
4. Why is Amsterdam called “the City of Bicycles”
A. Because perfect bicycle paths lead to everywhere throughout the city.
B. Because riding is integrated into nature, city planning and local culture.
C. Because cycling for daily travel in the city gains increasing popularity.
D. Because Amsterdam bans driving to work regardless of age and lifestyle.
5. Why did the initial white bike project fail
A. The bicycles required constant maintenance and became too expensive
B Most of the bicycles were stolen shortly after the program was launched.
C. The public strongly opposed the idea of riding to work in the city center.
D. It lacked enough funding and government’s support to continue the plan.
6. Which of the following best describes the new system
A. Advanced and secure. B. Demanding and fancy.
C. Practical and complex. D. Flexible and expensive.
7. What is the best title of the passage
A. Amsterdam—the origin of bikes. B. Amsterdam—the home of riders.
C. Amsterdam—a city driven by riding. D. Amsterdam—a city made for cycling.

A new study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine suggests that an inability to stand unsupported on one leg for 10 seconds in middle and older age is associated with nearly double the risk of death from any cause within the next decade. This simple balance test may be useful to include in routine physical exams for these age groups.
The research noted that while aging leads to declines in physical fitness, muscle strength, and flexibility, balance remains reasonably well-preserved until a person’s 50s, when it starts to wane relatively rapidly. Previous research has linked poor one-legged balance to a greater risk of falls and cognitive decline.
The study involved 1,702 participants aged 51 to 75 living in Brazil. During an initial check, they were asked to balance unsupported on one leg: placing the front of the free foot behind the standing leg, keeping arms by their sides, and eyes fixed straight ahead. Up to three attempts on either foot were permitted. Participants averaged 61 years old, with two-thirds being men. Approximately one in five (around 20%) failed to balance for 10 seconds at this initial checkup.
Researchers monitored participants for seven years after the checkup. Within this period, 123 people (7%) died. The proportion (比例) of deaths among those who failed the test (17.5%) was significantly higher than among those who passed (4.5%).
Study author Dr. Claudio Gil Araújo emphasized that the ability to balance on one leg is important for older people and reflects wider fitness and health levels.
The study was observational and does not establish cause and effect, nor did it investigate potential biological mechanisms explaining the link between poor balance and longevity. However, those who failed the test generally had poorer health, including a higher proportion of people who were fat and/ or had heart disease, high blood pressure, unhealthy blood fat profiles, and type 2 diabetes.
Conducted between 2009 and 2020 as part of a wider project starting in 1994, the study also found that the inability to complete the test increased markedly with age. Failure rates roughly doubled at following 5-year intervals from the 51-55 age group onwards. More than half (around 54%) of participants aged 71-75 failed, compared to just 5% in the 51-55 age bracket.
8. What does the underlined word “wane” in paragraph 2 possibly mean
A. Strengthen. B. Decrease. C. Expand. D. Spread.
9. What can we learn from the study
A. Those aged 51 and above were asked to balance the body.
B. The participants had to stand on one leg with arms crossed.
C. The majority of participants succeeded in balancing initially.
D. Those failing to balance had double danger of death in later life.
10. How did the test failure rate change with age according to the finding
A. It increased just after age 70. B. It showed a slight and steady rise.
C. It remained constant across all ages. D. It roughly doubled every five years.
11. What is the passage mainly about
A. The imbalance of body tends to increase with the flexibility falling.
B. The imbalance of standing on one leg suggests higher risks of death.
C. Irregular physical exercise does harm to building up muscle strength.
D. The inability to stand stably causes higher rates of developing diseases.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming China’s job market, creating a rise in opportunities and significant talent shortages. This booming field presents a complex picture of exciting possibilities alongside persistent challenges.
The AI job market in China is experiencing explosive growth. From January to July 2025, the number of new AI-related positions increased more than tenfold compared to the same period last year, with resume submissions (简历提交) increasing 11 times. Over 1, 000 companies posted 72,000 AI-related jobs on the Maimai platform alone. Major internet companies like ByteDance, Xiaohongshu, and Alibaba are leading the recruitment (招聘) drive, while specialized AI firms are also actively competing for talent. The rate of AI in new positions has now gone beyond 10% in the new economy sector, a tenfold increase from the previous year.
Despite the boom, a significant talent gap remains, particularly for technical roles. Algorithm-related (算法相关) positions are most in demand, with “search algorithm” experts being the most scarce. The talent supply-demand rate for this role is just 0.39, meaning roughly five positions compete for only two qualified individuals. This shortage has driven salaries upward.
The average monthly salary for new AI positions reached 61,475 yuan during the first seven months of 2025, a 4.33% year-on-year increase. Recent graduates are also benefiting, with over half of entry-level AI positions offering monthly salaries more than 50,000 yuan. Some top companies, like Microsoft and Alibaba’s Pingtouge, offer average monthly salaries surpassing 90,000 yuan for new AI positions.
While the job market booms, China’s AI development faces several barriers. Experts point to a “broken chain” in the ecosystem, where computing power, model development, and final application fail to form a closed loop (闭环) with users.
Unlike other regions, China lacks a mature SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) market, forcing companies to tackle more complex, end-to-end business integration from the start.
Furthermore, the technology itself has limitations. AI models can produce “hallucinations” (错觉), generating seemingly reasonable but actually incorrect information. This poses serious risks in critical fields like healthcare, where inaccurate AI suggestions could lead to misdiagnosis.
The rise of AI in China creates a paradox. It generates numerous opportunities as well as existing problems. And now, the key challenge lies in taking advantage of the market’s energy to address its weaknesses. The future will depend not only on cultivating more specialized talent but also on building a more practical AI ecosystem that can truly transform industries.
12. Why are statistics listed in paragraph 2
A. To stress the increasing job opportunities. B. To analyse the challenges of job market.
C. To show the appearance of new AI firms. D. To highlight the importance of resumes.
13. What does the underlined “this role” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. The economy sector. B. The economy expert.
C. Search algorithm experts. D. Professional interviewers.
14. What is the main reason for high salaries in new AI positions
A. Shortage of qualified talents. B. Fewer graduates in AI fields.
C. Rapid advances of AI technology. D. Competition among top companies.
15. How can China’s AI develop better according to the passage
A. By creating more complicated computer ecosystems.
B. By training AI models to collect logical information.
C. By developing specialists and practical AI ecosystem.
D. By drawing on global energy to solve tricky problems.
第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Scarecrows (稻草人) are a normal sight in the countryside, and their first job is to stop birds from coming near. However, they just work better on some birds than others.
Tests in 1980 showed that small ponds with a scarecrow nearby had 95% fewer visits from local ducks. ____16____ In the 1930s, a wildlife scientist named K. R. Lagler put a scarecrow on a floating object at a fish farm in West Virginia. While most birds stayed away, kingfishers (翠鸟) weren’t scared at all.
Let’s leave water aside for a minute. ____17____ But here, their ability to protect crops is also not good unless people try extra hard. Traditional motionless scarecrows might keep the birds like crows and blackbirds away at first, but this effect doesn’t last long. Birds quickly get used to the still figures and start eating crops again.
____18____ Studies show that scarecrows with lifelike faces and bright clothes work a little better. Besides, moving a scarecrow around every few days often helps.
A study in 1989 also confirmed that the best scarecrows have movement. The researcher found a very effective setup — a human-shaped model pushed up by a double propane cannon (双丙烷加农炮). ____19____
In the future, farmers may use more high-tech tools instead. For example, the “Agrilaser” uses random, moving laser beams that make no noise. Its makers say birds never get used to this. ____20____ It has an infrared (红外线的) eye that watches an area of 178,000 square feet. When it sees an animal getting too close, it sends out a harmless supersonic sound to scare it away. These technologies try to fix the main problem with old scarecrows: birds get used to them too easily.
A. Surprisingly, they ended up in vain.
B. However, not all birds care about them.
C. Above all, some researchers stated different views.
D. After all, most people think of scarecrows in fields.
E. It protected up to 6 acres of sunflowers from blackbirds.
F. Luckily, a few tricks can make scarecrows work better.
G. Another new idea is the solar-powered digital scarecrow.

A teacher in New York decided to honor each of her seniors in high school for their positive impacts. She called each student to the front of the class, one at a time. First she told them how the student made a difference to the class. Then she presented each of them with a blue ribbon (丝带) with gold letters which read, “Who I Am Makes A Difference”.
Afterwards the teacher decided to do a class project to see how others recognition influences a person. She gave each student three more ribbons and asked them to spread this acknowledgement ceremony. Then they were to follow up on the results, to see who honored whom and report back to the class in a week.
One of the boys in the class went to a manager in a nearby company and honored him for helping him with his career planning. He gave him a blue ribbon and put it on his shirt. Then he gave him two extra ribbons, and said, “We’re doing a class project on recognition, and we’d like you to find somebody else to honor, and give them a blue ribbon, then give them the extra blue ribbon so they can acknowledge a third person to keep this acknowledgement ceremony going.”
Later that day, the manager went to see his boss, who was kind. He told his boss that he deeply admired him for being a creative genius. The boss seemed very surprised. The manager asked him if he would accept the gift of the blue ribbon. His surprised boss said, “Well, sure.”
