Steve Wells is a British man who loves looking at trees. He spends most of his weekends doing so, plus evenings sometimes, alongside his day job. “I like giving my time to something worthwhile,” he says. “If I can help to protect our beautiful trees and woodlands, then I have spent my time well.”
In spring 2024, Steve joined Observatree, which is a non-profit project between several organisations and charities. It is run with 200 volunteers who have been trained to recognise new diseases and pest threats to UK trees.
He visits trees, whether individually in woodlands or in parks, to look for symptoms (症状) affecting their health. Also, he keeps reports on his findings and hands them in to the Woodland Trust where the information is added to a database for the use of professional researchers. “One of the good things about this project is that it is really flexible,” he explains. “The minimum contribution required is 12 surveys a year but it is easily achievable. Last year, I actually handed in 40 reports.”
Sometimes his work involves more than just looking at trees, with reports followed up with the collection of samples (样本), which are sent to Forest Research for testing. “There are 22 main pests and diseases that need special attention, including ash dieback, sweet chestnut blight and the oak processionary moth,” explains Steve.
The Woodland Trust recently asked him to become a lead volunteer to help and support other volunteers, and he is excited about what his second year of surveying (勘查) will bring. “If the trees could talk, I imagine the stories they could tell me about what has happened around them over the years. I really like surveying at places of historic interest for that reason, where some of the trees have been around for hundreds of years,” says Steve.
4. What makes Steve Wells think his time is “well-spent”
A. He learns about tree-planting skills.
B. He helps protect trees and woodlands.
C. He earns extra money from volunteering.
D. He gets a chance to travel to different parks.
5. What extra work does Steve Wells sometimes do besides looking at trees
A. Selling tree samples to Forest Research.
B. Managing the Woodland Trust’s database.
C. Providing follow-up reports and tree samples.
D. Teaching local people how to prevent tree diseases.
6. Why does Steve like surveying trees at historic sites
A. Better working conditions.
B. Need for site protection.
C. More rewards for surveying.
D. Curiosity about old trees’ stories.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Steve Wells
A. Determined and brave. B. Talented and patient.
C. Warm-hearted and devoted. D. Hard-working and traditional.

Koalas are known for their furry ears, round faces, and big black noses. They spend most of their time sleeping in the treetops of eucalyptus (桉树) forests. Because they love staying high up and moving very little, it is hard to find these cute Australian animals. But a new method might make it easier.
In areas where koalas kangaroos, and other animals live, scientists are using a new way to find them. They capture DNA floating in the air using filters (过滤器) made of cheesecloth, a type of cloth often found in kitchens.
These filters are placed between two metal plates. The scientists tested this method at 26 sites in four nature reserves in Queensland, Australia. At each site, they placed two filters - one about 1.5 meters above the ground with a fan to draw in air, and the other closer to the ground.
After a few days, the researchers collected the filters and studied the material caught in them. They were happy to find koalas’ DNA as well as DNA from eleven other species that live in the area.
Koala populations have dropped a lot in recent years because of wildfires and diseases. In 2022, the Australian government said that koalas are endangered in some parts of the country. To help protect them, scientists have used advanced tools like thermal imaging drones (无人驾驶飞机) and sound recorders to find koalas. The new method is cheaper and easier to use.
“Some of the work in this study is really an important step,” said an ecologist. The experiment was done in an uncontrolled environment, where things like strong winds or rain could affect the results. “The fact that they were still able to have some success is really encouraging,” he said.
8. What does the underlined word “capture” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Measure. B. Create. C. Limit. D. Catch.

The sun is setting, brightening your kids’ faces as they play in the waves. You reach for your phone for this perfect moment. But before you do, here’s a bit of surprising science: Taking photos is not the perfect way to keep memory as you think.
Taking too many pictures could actually harm the brain’s ability to keep memories, says Elizabeth Loftus, a psychology professor at the University of California, Irvine. So we get the photo but kind of lose the memory.
Photography “outsources” memories. It works in two ways: We either shake off the responsibility of remembering moments when taking pictures, or we’re so distracted by the process that we miss the moment altogether.
The first explanation is the loss of memory. People know that their camera is recording that moment, so they don’t try to remember. Similarly, if you write down someone’s phone number, you’re less likely to remember it offhand because your brain tells you there’s just no need. That’s all well and good—until that piece of paper goes missing.
The other is distraction. We’re distracted by the process of taking a photo how we hold our phone, composing the photo, such as smiling faces, the background to our liking and clear image, all of which uses up our attention that could otherwise help us memorize.
However, taking photos can benefit memory — when done mindfully. While taking a photo may be distracting, the act of preparation by focusing on visual details around has some upsides. When people take the time to zoom in (拉近镜头) on specific things, memories become strengthened.
Another benefit is that we recall moments more accurately with the photos. Memory has been reshaped with the help of new information and new experiences. Thus, photos or videos help us recall moments as if they really happened.
Memories die away without a visual record backing them up. Therefore, a photo is an excellent tool to help remember when done purposefully, which is worth exploring further.
12. What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To introduce the topic of the passage.
B. To call on readers not to take photos.
C. To show the interest in taking photos.
D. To explain how to take perfect photos.
13. Why does photography “outsource” memories
A. Photos are more detailed than memories.
B. Many sources influence people’s memories.
C. People depend more on photos to remember.
D. Taking photos is helpful for us to memorize.
14. What will be discussed next
A. Situations when taking photos is better.
B. When distraction is most likely to happen.
C. How to use photo-taking to memorize better.
D. How to stay focused while taking photos.
15. What may be a suitable title for the text
A. Remember the moment and take photos properly.
B. Fewer photos, stronger memories.
C. Photos’ effects on memory recall.
D. Better skills, sharper memory.

How Being an Athlete Helps Me Run My Business
People often ask me how I grew my business so quickly. The answer is that my background as a triathlete (铁人三项运动员) has been one of my biggest advantages.
As legendary college football Paul “Bear” Bryant said, “It’s not the will to win that matters. ____16____”
There were lots of days during my triathlon training when I didn’t necessarily feel like going for a long run or an 80-mile bike ride. ____17____ In my business, I also showed up daily to do the work, whether that was writing articles, creating content, or building an audience. I made sure that even if I only had 20 minutes to spend on the business each day, I was doing it.
____18____ When I was a sportsman, I always found myself stuck at some point. As a businessman, I constantly feel the same way. I’ve spent thousands of dollars on courses, certifications and books. I see it as similar to hiring the best trainer, equipment or coach to get me to the next level and to improve my game.
The final key is to look at failure as a helpful part of the process. There are going to be tons of missed shots, slow races, and injuries. Athletes understand that all of those are necessary to create wins. ____19____ You need to be able to learn from setbacks so that you can approach the next opportunity with even greater confidence. All you need to do is reflect and learn from your missteps. ____20____
A. The same is true in business.
B. Where there is a will, there is a way.
C. It’s the will to prepare to win that matters.
D. It’s also vital to learn from the best in your field.
E. They will ultimately help you get closer to your goals.
F. You also need to push yourself beyond your current boundaries.
G. But I knew that I did want the results that the training would provide.
