As the sun neared the horizon, Ali began his nightly walk through the sandy streets of Timbuktu in Mali. Covered in robes of indigo, he passed through the streets of Timbuktu and continued out into the sand dunes (沙丘), just beyond the city’s western suburbs.
Ali was a teenager when he first saw the city that would later become his home. “I couldn’t believe the lights!” he remembered. Members of his family still live a semi-nomadic (半游牧的) existence out in the desert. But when he became an adult, drought and the need to earn a living drove Ali into Timbuktu, where he set up a business as a guide for tourists who wanted to explore the Sahara. His heart remained in the desert even when he had to be in the city. He refused to get a fixed-line telephone in case he came to depend upon it. When he had no clients, he would escape to the desert, spending months at a time camping out, drinking tea with friends and sleeping under the stars.
As a guide, Ali made friends from around the world, and he visited some in Europe. It was, to him, an alien world, just as Timbuktu remains for many around the globe. “The first time I was in Europe, I saw water just lying on the ground. Everything moved at a speed that was unthinkable in the Sahara. I thought “these people are crazy”. In the desert we have infinite time but no water,” he said. “In Europe, you have plenty of water but no time.”
When travelers wanted to see more of the Sahara, Ali took them to Araouane, a sand-drowned town 270 km north of Timbuktu. And yet for the tourists who visited there, the town was undoubtedly more to it than that. There was something there that produced a feeling similar to excitement. It was the awe of vast skies and big horizons.
4. What did Ali do daily at sunset
A. He chatted with neighbors. B. He took a night walk.
C. He took a photo of the sun. D. He bought some food in a store.
5. How did Ali feel when first seeing the city
A. Confused. B. Amazed.
C. Frightened. D. Moved.

A. He escaped from Sahara Desert with his friends.
B. He explored the Sahara Desert on his own.
C. He lived a semi-nomadic life with his wife.
D. He established a travel company.
7. What does the underlined part “these people are crazy” in paragraph 3 mean
A. People in Europe are always busy with their life.
B. People in Europe always let water running.
C. People in Europe are curious about everything.
D. People in Europe waste so much time.

The Guardian (卫报) has updated its style guide to introduce terms that more accurately describe the environmental crises facing the world.
Instead of “climate change”, the preferred terms are “climate emergency, crisis or breakdown” and “global heating” is favored over “global warming”, although the original terms are not banned.
“We want to ensure that we are being scientifically precise, while also communicating clearly with readers on this very important issue,” said the editor-in-chief, Katharine Viner. “The phrase ‘climate change’, for example, sounds rather passive and gentle when what scientists are talking about is a disaster for people.”
“Increasingly, climate scientists and organizations from the UN to the Met Office are changing their terms, and using stronger language to describe the situation we’re in,” she said. Other terms that have been updated, including the use of “wildlife” rather than “biodiversity”, “fish populations” instead of “fish stocks” and “climate science denier (否认气候变化者)” rather than “climate sceptic”.
Earlier in May, Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teenager who has inspired school strikes for climate around the globe, said: “Can we all now call it what it is: climate breakdown, climate crisis, climate emergency, ecological breakdown, ecological crisis and ecological emergency ”
The update to the Guardian’s style guide follows the addition of the global carbon dioxide level to the Guardian’s daily weather pages. “Levels of CO2 in the atmosphere have risen so dramatically, which is symbolic of what human activity is doing to our climate,” said Viner in April. “People need reminding that the climate crisis is no longer a future problem-we need to tackle it now, and every day matters.”
8. Why is the Guardian changing the language it uses about the environment
A. To illustrate the world’s environment crises in a more precise way.
B. To remove all the negative expressions concerning environment problems.
C. To achieve more accurate description of the diverse world we live in.
D. To make the terms about environment sound more academic.
9. In terms of the Guardian’s language changing in the field of environment, which of the following statement is true
A. Since the new terms about environment crises have been adopted, the original ones are all banned.
B. “Climate crisis” as a stronger term helps to describe the real threat facing the world.
C. Compared with “climate crisis”, “climate change” sounds more pessimistic and depressing.
D. Global carbon dioxide level is added to the Guardian’s daily weather pages after the update of the style guide.
10. All the following are newly updated terms except ________.
A. wildlife B. fish population
C. biodiversity D. climate science denier
11. What was the primary purpose of Greta Thunberg by saying “Can we all now call it what it is: climate breakdown,... emergency”
A. To set a good example for teenagers as a well-behavior student.
B. To convey Swedish schools’ willingness to listen to different voices from teenagers.
C. To show it is urgent to update environment terms.
D. To show how popular environment campaigns are among Sweden.

By examining tiny vessels (血管) inside a person’s eyes, doctors might one day be able to predict that person’s risk of early death, according to a new study.
Past research had shown the retina (视网膜), light-sensitive layers of nerve tissue at the back of the eye, as a possible indicator of a person’s biological age. The retina offers a unique, accessible “window” to evaluate underlying pathological (病理的) processes of some serious diseases that are associated with increased risks of death. In the new study, the researchers turned to a deep-learning technique that could predict a person’s risk of death by analyzing the biological age of the retina.
Their deep-learning model, a type of machine learning and artificial intelligence that’s modeled to learn similar to a human brain, analyzed more than 80,000 images of fundus (眼底) — the internal back surface of the eye that includes the retina. They obtained the images from nearly 47.000 people between the ages of 40 and 69, stored in the UK Biobank. To figure out whether their model was accurate, they first analyzed more than 19,000 fundus images taken from more than 1,100 participants who were in relatively good health. The idea was that the retinal biological ages of these people should be fairly similar to their chronological age (实际年龄).
The model was fairly accurate in predicting retinal ages, with an accuracy of within 3.5 years to chronological ages. They then used the model to assess the remaining nearly 36,000 participants’ fundus photos collected across a span of 11 years. They found that 51 percent of the participants had a “retinal age gap” — the difference between biological and chronological age of more than 3 years, 28 percent had a gap of more than 5 years and 4.5 percent had a gap of more than 10 years. In other words, these participants had “older” eyes compared to their chronological age.
Those who had larger age gaps had a 49-67 percent higher risk of death from causes other than cardiovascular disease or cancer. With every one year increase in the age gap, the risk of death increased by 2 percent for any cause and 3 percent for causes other than cardiovascular disease and cancer.
12. What can we know about the retina
A. It causes serious diseases.
B. It helps to analyze pathological processes.
C. It can diagnose some serious diseases.
D. It improves people’s physical health.
13. How do researchers know the retinal age
A. By examining the nerve tissue. B. By studying the human brain.
C. By checking the eyesight. D. By analyzing fundus images.
14. What percentage of the participants had the largest retinal age gap
A. 3.5%. B. 4.5%. C. 28%. D. 51%.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. A new study is conducted on tiny vessels.
B. Image technology is used to predict diseases.
C. Retinal age gaps may reveal risks of death.
D. A deep-learning on the retina is necessary.

第二节(满分20分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Wilma was a lively child who always wanted to play outside. The only problem was, she got sick — a lot! Ever since she was born, she was either feverish, coughing, sneezing or covered in spots. . . or at least, that was how she remembered it! Poor Wilma caught lots of diseases with long names and spent a lot of time in the hospital. “If being ill were a sport, I’d be a champion!”
When she was five, Wilma caught something called polio, and it looked as if she might never get to play outside again. Wilma recovered from catching polio, but her left leg and foot were badly weakened by the disease. This made it difficult for her to walk.
That meant she couldn’t go to nursery school or her first years of primary school like everyone else. It made her upset to see the other kids having fun outside. While the doctors treated her weak leg and she learned how to walk again, she had lessons at home.
Wilma also had to take a fifty-mile bus ride with her mum twice a week to go to Meharry Medical College. The kind doctors and nurses at the college gave her exercises to strengthen her muscles. She had to wear a metal brace (支架) that supported her left leg. Using this, she could finally walk by herself and go to school with other kids. That sounded good, but the little girl really hated wearing it. She had to wear it with heavy shoes that made her stand out.
“What will the other kids say ” she asked her mum. “I don’t want to look different!” Her mother tried to cheer her up. “You won’t have to wear it forever, dear. Just keep exercising and make your leg strong!” That’s what Wilma did! She made sure to do all the exercises the doctors gave her to make her leg better. It wasn’t easy, but she kept imagining how wonderful it would be to walk to school without the brace.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
When Wilma was twelve, the doctors decided that her leg was strong enough.
