People depend on plants. We use plants for food, clothes, shelter (住处), and even the air we breathe.
Plants keep our air and water clean. Green plants give us oxygen. Oxygen is part of the air we breathe.
Plants are also part of the water cycle (循环). Most of the water that a plant takes in goes back into the air.
Plants give us a lot of the food on the earth. Fruits, vegetables, and grains (谷物) come from plants. Without plants, we would not have bread, rice, carrots, apples, oranges or bananas! Many people are growing plants to eat in their own gardens at home. Having your own garden helps the earth as well.
When you grow your own fruits and vegetables, you help cut down on pollution because big trucks don’t need to take your food to shops. You also help reduce the amount of rubbish because you don’t need to use bags for packing your food. You can just pick it out of the ground or off a plant and put it into a basket!
Trees are an important plant resource (资源). Trees provide wood to build homes and furniture. Trees are used to make lots of things around your home and at your school. And trees provide fruits that are good for you. Without trees, the earth would be a very different place.

On September 3, 2025, a big army show was held in Tiananmen Square, Beijing. It celebrated the 80th year of China’s victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (抗日战争胜利). The most exciting part was the planes flying in groups, which showed how strong China’s air force is today.
First, helicopters carrying China’s national flag flew over. Behind them were many types of planes, such as early warning planes, fighter jets, bombers and transport planes. Many of these planes are very good, and some were shown to the public for the first time. They flew in perfect order, making people below cheer loudly.
However, things were very different in 1949, when China’s founding day took place. There were only 17 planes in the show then. To make the group look bigger, some fighter jets flew around and passed Tiananmen Square twice. Also, there were few types of planes, and none were made in China. This great change did not come easily. It is the result of hard work by many generations of Chinese scientists and workers. They spent a lot of time and effort building better planes.
Now, China has more planes than ever, and its plane—making industry is growing fast. We should remember their efforts and keep making our country stronger.

“Just because you can’t see something, that doesn’t mean it’s not there.” This old saying is quite meaningful for Willard, a sculptor (雕刻家) from Britain. The items he creates are so small that most of them fit on the head of a pin. You can see them clearly only through a microscope (显微镜).
Many people want to own his art pieces. He’s been honored by the Queen of England for his great art achievements. At every one of his exhibitions, the question is always the same. How does he do it
The answer is very, very careful. So careful, in fact, that he actually slows his breathing down and works in between breaths. Willard usually works under a microscope using special tools that he creates. To paint his works, he uses the hair from a fly (苍蝇) as a paintbrush.
Creating these detailed works is a long and difficult process, and it isn’t always enjoyable.
“It is a terrible dream when I start but a nice dream when I finish,” he says. A single item can take at least several weeks to complete.
People have asked Willard why he chose to do something that needed effort and took time. His interest in creating small things began when he was five years old. He started creating houses and playgrounds for ants. Willard was not a strong student. He had difficulty in reading and spelling words. Some kids used to call him a loser. This made him feel small, so focusing on little things helped him to feel big. The smaller his work got, the bigger he felt. A newspaper reporter said, “Willard has shown the world that he is special. Though ________, he ________.”

66.Dear Mr. Wang,
I am Li Hua, an eighth-grade student in Sunshine Middle School, and I am writing to apply to be a volunteer in the “Digital Bridge” program.
I am patient and have experience helping my grandparents with technology. I would like to teach the elderly how to make video calls. My plan is to start with showing them how to open the app and add their family’s phone number. Then, we can practice making a call together step by step. I plan to meet them twice a week for four weeks. Besides, I have strong communication skills that help me explain ideas clearly to the elderly. Finally, I will create a simple, clear guide for them to keep.
I believe this skill can truly help them feel closer to their families. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Li Hua
