At the start of my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me to write my name. After I put it down, he said, plainly: “Now I will teach you how to make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch.
Growing up in Singapore, I had an uneasy relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese but they didn’t speak Mandarin. Unfamiliar with Chinese characters, they used fortune tellers to decide my name based on the ideal number of strokes (笔画) for each character, which was calculated for the best fortune. Chinese names can be truly poetic. Not mine. Embarrassingly, the characters for my Chinese name mean, roughly, “old,” “barley” and “warm.” My personal and cultural histories were messy knots.
When I arrived in America for college at 18, I embraced critical analysis and creative expression. It felt like a way to abandon the strict formalities that defined my early years in Singapore’s high-pressure education system, and with it, perhaps, parts of my identity. Suddenly, I felt the need to present myself in a way that Americans would accept. I put on an American accent and set aside my Chinese name. Ultimately, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage I thought.
In calligraphy, the idea is to replicate (复制) the old masters’ techniques, thereby enhancing your own. Every week, my teacher would evaluate my writing. “You need to be braver,” he once observed. “Your challenge is in producing a bold stroke.” For years, I had prided myself on developing an image of integration and confidence despite deep insecurities, but my writing betrayed me.
I had been learning calligraphy to try to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. That first lesson came with the terrific promise that what had been shameful in myself could be made beautiful—and that I could be the one to do that work. I know now that what calligraphy teaches me is not the value of replication but the possibility that I could know myself more fully.
24. What criterion guided the selection of the author’s Chinese name
A. Poetic sound patterns. B. Ideal symbolic images.
C. Favorable stroke counts. D. Positive literal meanings.
25. Why did the author adopt an American accent
A. To break with tradition. B. To fit into the community.
C. To achieve academic success. D. To facilitate language learning.
26. What have we learned about the author’s experience with calligraphy
A. It revealed her inner self. B. It improved her public image.
C. It presented no challenge to her. D. It enhanced her replication skills.
27. What has the author learned from calligraphy
A. Fortune favors the bold. B. Embrace who you truly are.
C. Our roots define our identity. D. Planning is good, but doing is better.
C
New era requires a new vocabulary. Will we still talk about the “mobile” phone when all phones are mobile, or when they are implanted within us
Technology is everywhere nowadays, especially at work. Some people are really good at using all the cool new tools that keep popping up. They have something called a TQ, or technology quotient. Think of it like a superpower for understanding the latest tech stuff that our great-grandparents would have found really impossible. Having a high TQ means you’re awesome at using all the cool new things that not everyone knows about yet.
The examples are common and becoming more and more frequent. For the parent it might be a home-school video class. For the brand manager it might be search engine boosting. And for the clinician, it might be the role of artificial intelligence in supporting the analysis of a CT scan. TQ attempts to quantify our ability to make sensible use of current technologies and to quickly adapt, embrace and capitalize on future creations. This adoption is critical from a variety of perspectives, from social to business. One trip into the world of ChatGPT and we can see how the dynamics of AI and search are changing for just about everyone.
Any Mom or Dad can understand the value of IQ and EQ in projecting the potential for a child’s success. But what about technology The ability for the child and the teacher to understand, embrace and assimilate technology will be a defining aspect of their lives as we speed into the future. We are increasingly defined by technology and our active participation in everything from smart phones to Facebook. It might just be time for the basic human needs of food, water and shelter to incorporate technology too. And when that happens, it just might be a good idea to measure it.
While this shift brings challenges, it’s unstoppable. As TQ rises, it will combine with IQ and EQ, reshaping how we live, work, and learn — turning adaptability with tech into a measurable edge.
28. What is TQ according to the text
A. Speed of learning new languages. B. Skill of fixing high-tech products.
C. Talent to follow modern changes. D. Ability to apply new technologies.
29. Which of the following people has a high TQ
A A manager who often uses modern search engines.
B. A doctor who analyzes CT scans with AI assistance.
C. A grandparent who finds new tech devices awkward.
D. A mom who watches videos of her child’s school life.
30. What does the underlined word “assimilate” in the fourth paragraph mean
A. Rely on. B. Take in. C. Benefit from. D. Learn about.
31. What might be the best title for the passage
A. Why Are IQ and EQ Important for TQ B. How Has TQ Changed in the Modern Era
C. What Makes TQ the New Intelligence D. Where to Start Adapting to TQ Changes
D
“Then would you invest short-term or long-term ” asks Jennifer Varga, a teacher at Memorial Middle School in New Jersey.
Personal-finance courses targeted at pupils are being popularized across America, promoted by rules requiring such instruction. Since 2020, 17 states have adopted laws that make taking a financial course necessary for completing high school, bringing the total up to 25. That figure will probably grow.
Pupils in these classes learn not only how to save their earnings in order to have something to invest in the first place, but simple economic problems. Courses cover comparison shopping and the basics of how to properly bank, budget, handle credit and pay for college. Young people badly need these courses.
Few teenagers score highly on financial knowledge assessments. Are personal-finance courses the answer For a long time, the studies said no. Many analyses, including one cited over 2,500 times, claimed that financial courses were of no avail. The analyses made intuitive (直觉的) sense, as many teenagers have yet to work or manage a household. But more recent findings have shown an opposite picture. Research has gotten better and the courses themselves have also improved. Studies that use the gold standard of investigation have found the courses are working well and useful in improving financial knowledge and behaviour.
The newest survey conducted in 33 countries found people who take these courses learn the content and budget better. And pupils who take personal-finance courses borrow less money. If they do borrow for college, they choose low-cost options. Some worry about adding one more graduation requirement to the long list, but schools are willing to remove courses with less direct bearing on life skills. “When I was 20, it would have been nice to have this class,” Ms Varga says. She got into some financial trouble as a young adult. “I want them to be better than my generation.”
32. What fuels the spread of personal-finance courses
A. A major demand from schools. B. The unsteadiness of finance.
C. A new requirement for graduation. D. The popularity of banking.
33. What can students learn in personal-financial courses
A. Long-term investment. B. Daily finance management.
C. Strategies for earning money. D. Policies on financial development.
34. What does the underlined phrase “of no avail” mean in paragraph 4
A. Unfamiliar. B. Unsystematic. C. Inaccessible. D. Ineffective.
35 What do the survey results imply
A. The courses have lasting value. B. More attention is needed to finance.
C. Fewer students borrow for college. D. The graduation standards are high.

It was a typical busy noon at the downtown fast-food spot. The smell of sizzling patties and crispy fries lingered (弥漫) in the air, and the place was packed with folks rushing to grab a quick meal. I’d just gotten off a long morning at work, and my stomach was empty as I finally reached the front of the line and got my order-a burger, fries, and a cold drink.
As I set the tray (托盘) down on a small table by the window I glanced over and saw two firefighters in the corner. Their uniforms were heavy with faint spots, like they’d just stepped away from a smoky scene, and their boots still held a hint of damp from the morning dew. They stood in the back of the line, shoulders relaxed but eyes tired.
I was just about to pick up my burger-the cheese melted perfectly-when a loud, sharp siren (警报) cut through the noise of the restaurant. The two firefighters froze for half a second, and then moved. No hesitation, no exchange of words — just muscle memory. One grabbed his helmet off the nearby counter, the other adjusted his radio on his shoulder, and they turned toward the door, their steps quickening. I watched them go, and my fork paused mid-air.
My empty stomach served as a quiet reminder of how long I’d waited for this meal. I’d stood in that line for 15 minutes, my feet aching from the morning’s work. Giving them my lunch meant I would have to wait again-maybe another line, maybe my break slipping away faster. I bit my lip, staring at the tray. Then I thought of their uniforms, the spots, the way they’d act upon hearing the siren like it was a call they couldn’t ignore. They didn’t get to pause for a meal when emergencies hit. They’d probably go hours without eating, running from one call to the next.
注意:
1. 续写词数应150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My hesitation melted away.
