One weekend last summer, I paid a visit to the Sahara Desert with my boyfriend David. Before we went to the Sahara Desert, we had heard about the sandstorms there. But we didn’t believe we would be so unlucky to experience one.
We were in a jeep with our guide when someone who was traveling with us said a sandstorm was coming. But the guide shook his head, saying we shouldn’t worry. He took us straight to the place where we would take a camel ride.
We were watching sunrise after the camel ride when the sandstorm came. The winds roared through the valleys between dunes, lifting the sand until it was impossible to breathe.
David found me in the sand. Then he began taking off his long scarf around his neck and face, wanting to put it around my face instead. But I rejected it. Instead, I managed to put on a travel jacket that I had put in my backpack and pulled the hood around my face. David held me and we walked in the sand. All I wanted was to get back to our camp and out of the storm.
Unfortunately, getting back to the camp meant facing the storm. Both David and I climbed on our camels. Sand hit every part of my body. With eyes shut tight, I was blind, unable to control the camel. When we finally stopped, David helped me to get off the camel and led me to the side of a long black tent, where he rolled out a blanket and helped me to sit. We saw our guide near us. “I thought you guys were going to kill me,” he said. “There were signs, if I had paid attention. The driver asked me twice about doing the ride tomorrow morning instead of tonight, but everyone was so excited about riding camels that I didn’t want to see all of you feel upset.”
Most of us laughed it off. A few even took a pleasure in the experience. Though I suffered a lot, I didn’t regret my trip there. How many people can say they’ve ridden a camel through a sandstorm in the Sahara Desert
4. What happened to the author and her boyfriend
A. They lost their travel jackets. B. They met with a strong sandstorm.
C. They were cheated by a guide. D. They got lost in the Sahara Desert.

B. They prepared well for a possible sandstorm.
C. They had good skills in surviving sandstorms.
D. They suffered a lot on the way back to the camp.
6. Why didn’t the guide move the camel ride to the next day
A. He was encouraged not to by the driver.
B. He thought the sandstorm would stop soon.
C. He didn’t want to let the tourists down.
D. He wanted to finish the tour as quickly as possible.
7. What is the best title for the text

Many kinds of birds migrate (迁徙) every year, raising a family in one place during the warm summer months before flying to a warmer place to spend the cold winter months. In the northern half of the world, many birds fly north in the summer and south in the winter, looking for food and better conditions.
Many birds die along the way. Some of these deaths are the result of human actions, such as hunting or clearing huge areas of land that used to be used by migrating birds. But one of the biggest threats to migrating birds comes from things humans have built. Experts say that as many as one billion birds may die every year in the US alone as a result of flying into buildings. Other tall structures, such as power lines and cell towers, also lead to many bird deaths.
Buildings are a special challenge for migrating birds. The windows can reflect things like the sky or trees, causing birds to fly directly into the glass. And many birds migrate at night. As a result, the difficulty in migrating is amplified at night. That is because the bright city lights can confuse birds that are normally guided by the stars.
Philadelphia got a sad reminder of that last October when thousands of migrating birds were killed in one night. Over 1,000 birds were believed to have died in just one small area. Scientists still aren’t sure what made that night so bad, but it may have been connected with the low clouds over the city at the time.
Now the city begins a program called Lights Out Philly. Twice a year (from April 1 to May 31. and from August 15 to November 15), many of the city’s buildings go dark at night. The program, run by Bird Safe Philly, asks building owners and people who live in the area to keep the lights off between midnight and 6 in the morning. So far, many of the city’s best-known and tallest buildings have taken part in the program.
8. What does paragraph 2 tell us about the migration of birds
A. It takes place once a year.
B. It can affect human activities.
C. It can be hard and dangerous.
D. It is caused by human actions sometimes.
9. What does the underlined word “amplified” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Increased. B. Reduced.
C. Handled. D. Replaced.
10. What does the program run by Bird Safe Philly ask people to do
A. Stop hunting birds. B. Go out less at night.
C. Build homes for birds in cities. D. Tum off lights during the required time.
11. Why is Lights Out Philly started
A. To protect the environment.
B. To educate the public on birds.
C. To cut the cost of electricity.
D. To help birds pass Philadelphia safely.

Parents of teenagers often view their children’s friends with doubt, worrying that their children will be pushed by their peers (同龄人) into doing something silly or even dangerous. Their worries make sense. In a previous study, psychologist Laurence Steinberg found that a teenage driver with a same-age passenger in the car is at higher risk of traffic accidents than one driving alone or with an adult.
In the following years, Steinberg examined why teens were more likely to take risks in the company of other teenagers. In a later study, by scanning (扫描) the brains of 40 teens and adults, Steinberg found the brains of teenagers, but not adults, showed greater activity in two parts related to rewards (奖赏) when they were being watched by same-age peers. The reward systems of the brain start working whenever people experience something rewarding, like eating a nice-tasting food, which makes them feel good. In this case, rewards are greater for teens, which makes them want to seek higher-risk experiences.
But Steinberg thought peer pressure might also have its positive side. In the latest study, Steinberg’s team used a card game to research how peers influence the way young people gather and apply information. It included 101 teenage boys who played either alone or with three peers. They chose cards from four decks (牌堆): two decks had “good” cards, and two “bad” ones. Players with peers were more willing to take risks, trying to figure out which decks could help them to win. The results showed that teens playing with their peers do more exploratory behavior, learn faster and achieve better performance on the task than those playing alone.
Now some experts are suggesting that we should take advantage of the teens’ strong sensitivity (敏感性) to the presence of friends to improve education. “Risk taking in an educational setting is a very important skill that enables progress and creativity,” wrote Sarah Jayne Blakemore, a professor at University College London.
12. What does the author want to say by mentioning Steinberg’s study
A. Parents’ worries are reasonable. B. Teens drive more carelessly with peers.
C. Adults are better drivers than teens. D. Peer pressure only brings harm.
13. What is the reason behind teens’ dangerous behavior
A. Inability to tell right from wrong. B. A sense of satisfaction.
C. Eagerness to follow their friends. D. Lack of social experience.
14. How does risk-taking influence teens in the latest study
A. It starts fights between them. B. It inspires them to question.
C. It weakens their independence. D. It helps them to learn better.
15. What does Blakemore think of involving peers in learning
A. Helpful. B. Unnecessary. C. Risky. D. Challenging.

I was in my final year of high school, and like many of my peers, I was constantly stressed about my future. Everyone around me seemed to have their lives mapped out. But I was lost. I loved art, spending hours sketching in my notebook, but I was convinced that it wasn’t a practical career choice. My parents, both doctors, had high hopes for me to follow in their footsteps.
One day, during lunch break, I was sitting alone in the school garden, flipping through my sketchbook. As I stared at a drawing of a beautiful landscape I had created, I felt a pang of sadness. I was so absorbed in my thoughts that I didn’t notice Mr. Thompson, our art teacher, approaching.
“Mind if I take a look ” he asked gently. Startled, I handed him the sketchbook. He flipped through the pages slowly, his eyes lighting up with each drawing. “These are incredible, Lily. You have a real talent,” he said. I shrugged, “Thanks, but it’s just a hobby. I can’t make a living from drawing.” Mr. Thompson sat down beside me. “Why not There are so many amazing career opportunities in the art field-graphic design, illustration, art therapy... the list goes on.”
His words planted a seed of hope in my heart, but the doubts quickly crept back. That evening, at the dinner table, I hesitantly brought up the idea of studying art in college. My parents’ reactions were immediate. “Lily, we know you love art, but it’s not a stable career. You’ll struggle to make ends meet,” I remained silent, my appetite gone.
As the following school day ended, I found myself walking towards the art room. Mr. Thompson was inside, organizing some supplies. He smiled warmly, “I understand it’s a tough decision. But sometimes, you have to take a leap of faith and trust your instincts.” Just then, an announcement came over the school intercom. “Attention, students! The local art museum is hosting a high-school art competition. The winner will receive a full-scholarship to a renowned art school.” I froze. This could be my chance, but the fear of failure and my parents’ expectations were holding me back.
