There are few better ways to slow down and come together as a family than on a canal-boat break. Waterways offer a very different perspective on the UK, their quiet channels taking in some of the country’s most picturesque landscapes as well as its most fascinating industrial heritage.
Chirk to Ellesmere & Llangollen
Trip length: 16 hours return
For a journey that takes in some of the most dramatic scenery in the UK, head to Chirk in Wales for a trip on the Llangollen Canal. This short route through the Dee Valley is perfect for beginners, with plenty of stop-off points and the option to avoid locks.
Ely to Cambridge
Trip length: Three to four days
This East Anglian classic launches from the cathedral city of Ely, a few miles northeast of Cambridge. It’s 18 miles each way on the scenic rivers Ouse and Cam. The route passes through Wicken Fen wetland nature reserve, an ancient habitat of reedbeds and marshland that’s home to birds and butterflies. There are just four locks to tackle, which brings the strain for beginners.
Falkirk to Edinburgh
Trip length: Seven days
This Scottish break kicks off with a ride on the famous Falkirk Wheel, a towering mechanical masterpiece that lifts you onto the Union Canal. From there, sail into the Falkirk Tunnel and make a stop at the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, ruined Linlithgow Palace, which offers interactive family activities. Try watersports on Linlithgow Loch, before continuing across the 820ft-long Avon Aqueduct; kids will love that it snakes 85ft above the ground.
Stourport Ring, from Stoke Prior

Since the height of the pandemic, there has been a cultural shift in the way we talk about mental health. It’s as though the years of isolation and uncertainty helped us understand how vital our emotional needs were to our overall well-being.
Now that we’re paying more attention to our inner lives, it’s also essential that we take action. Fortunately, there are a number of things that everyone can do to nourish their mental health and find moments of joy.
Here are some of our favorite tips from the past year.
1. Try a proven way to sleep better.
Experts say that getting enough sleep is one of the most important things we can do for our mental health. If you’re having trouble falling or staying asleep, studies have found that cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, or C.B.T.-I., is as effective as using sleep medications in the short term — and more effective in the long term. C.B.T.-I. helps people address worries about sleep and find ways to ease.
2. Learn how to tell whether your anxiety is protective or problematic.
It’s normal to feel anxious from time to time. In fact, having some anxiety can actually be useful. Experts say an internal alarm system can improve our performance, help us recognize danger and even encourage us to be more responsible. So we asked Dr. Petros Levounis, the president of the American Psychiatric Association: How much anxiety is too much
“If you start to notice that worry and fear are there constantly, that is a signal that you need some help,” he said.
Other signs to look out for include restlessness, a sense of fear or bad outcomes, increased heart rate, sweating, trembling and trouble concentrating.
3. Embrace gratitude.
Gratitude is a positive emotion that can arise when you acknowledge that you have goodness in your life and that other people — or higher powers, if you believe in them — have helped you achieve that goodness.
To really enjoy the benefits of gratitude, experts say, it’s important to express it whenever possible. That might include writing letters of thanks or listing the positive things in your life in a journal. Giving thanks to friends, romantic partners and even co-workers can also offer a relationship boost.
4. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The pandemic's impact on our physical health.
B. How to improve our mental health through various practices.
C. The importance of therapies for mental health issues.
D. The role of gratitude in professional settings.
5. What can be inferred about cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia
A. It helps people relax and reduce sleep concerns.
B. It can reduce the side effect of sleep medications.
C. It is a temporary solution rather than long-term.
D. It is less acknowledged than traditional remedies.
6. According to the passage, what is one way to determine if anxiety is problematic
A. If it occasionally helps you recognize danger and improve performance.
B. If it encourages responsibility but brings unease.
C. If it continuously causes tension along with physical symptoms like sweating.
D. If it sometimes makes you restless but more productive.
7. How does the passage suggest one can benefit from gratitude
A. By receiving help from others. B. By avoiding letters and journals.
C. By focusing on personal achievements. D. By recognizing and expressing thanks.
C
Professor Shadreck Chirikure challenges expectations: an archaeologist of ancient civilisations who is fixed on the future; an expert in highly-technical sciences, who likes to mend random things, and a charmingly humourous story-teller, whose colleagues claim he has the skills of a stand-up comedian.
Professor Chirikure’s online lectures are really funny and he talks quickly with the urgency of an alternative comedian. But his message is serious. He insists that the interview must not just be about his individual history, which he clearly finds boring. Professor Chirikure has a very clear message about the importance of archaeological science and what it can tell us about the past—for the benefit of the future. He moves rapidly over his story, and on to what he really wants to talk about.
The young Shadreck was born in dry southern Zimbabwe, just 60km from the iconic Great Zimbabwe site, which was to become so defining in his career. He says, “Archaeology had so much in terms of opportunities.”
Understanding the importance and strengths of past great civilisations, he believes, points a future for modern Africa. Professor Chirikure insists, “There were great knowledge and skills achieved over time. Half the time, we ignore them. But for me this is exploring. At Great Zimbabwe, our research shows, they were innovating, they had important knowledge. We need to use that knowledge today.”
It is what makes Archaeology a critical subject, he insists, a bridge from the past to the present, “People see archaeology as a backwards-looking discipline. But we can look backwards to the future – and use the knowledge of generations that has been lost.”
With a smile, he says seriously, “The past is gone, civilisations have changed, the world’s population has crossed eight billion and we need to apply the knowledge we have forgotten.”
8. What qualities make Professor Shadreck Chirikure unique
A. An archaeologist focused on the future, tech expert, and humorous storyteller.
B. A traditional archaeologist who avoids modern technology and focuses on the past.
C. A serious lecturer who is humorless and dislikes fixing things.
D. A personal storyteller, uninterested in archaeological research.
9. What does Professor Chirikure find uninteresting in interviews
A. His online lecture style. B. His technical expertise.
C. His comedic skills. D. His personal background.
10. According to the passage, what is one of Professor Chirikure’s key messages about archaeology
A. It focuses on preserving ancient items for future generations.
B. It has lost its significance in the contemporary world.
C. It connects the achievements of past civilisations to modern advancements.
D. It should only be seen as a discipline studying old cultures.
11. What does the passage imply about the Great Zimbabwe site
A. Significant importance in his career due to urgent protection.
B. Previously a site of innovation and significant knowledge.
C. Mostly a site visited by tourists today without adequate conservation
D. Offering scarce archaeological opportunities compared to other sites.
D
When I asked my 15-year-old cousin about her ideal occupation, she gave me an unusual answer, saying that she dreams of becoming an online celebrity, which reminded me of a new girl band called “Sunshine”. These teens have quickly got an ill fame across China because of their “unattractive” and “fat” appearance and laughably bad singing skills. But rather than wither at the offence coming from their 430,000 followers on Weibo, they seem to bloom on the criticism.
And following Sunshine’s explosion, numerous new bands like “Power Girls” and “Love-wings” starring average-looking adolescent girls started popping up on people’s mobiles. Lots of ordinary, disadvantaged Chinese teens with no skills but big dreams have looked to unlikely role models such as the Sunshine girls as proof that all it takes is a little self-confidence to get your name in the headlines. It’s incredible to witness so many young Chinese girls make spectacles of themselves online in a desperate attempt to stand out from thousands of potential stars.
This kind of grassroots self-promotion is fantastic for Chinese youth who may not otherwise have any opportunities or privileges to be outstanding in China’s competitive society but for those well-educated kids, there is a rising concern among parents that social networking is distracting them from academics.
Sadly, these so-called stars quickly disappear from people’s attention once a new band pops up. Besides, they are likely to leave behind the online record of their ridiculous and sometimes scandalous behavior. Prospective employers and even potential husbands or wives will eventually see these photos and videos, which could affect their futures.
The good news is that, in today’s Internet age, fame and fortune are easily attainable for otherwise unqualified kids, but the bad news is that their narcissistic (自恋的) addictions to social media will interfere with learning knowledge and real-life skills, leaving an entire generation of wired youth with absolutely no other alternative once their online followers forget about them.
12. What does the underlined word “wither” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Fade. B. Succeed. C. Tease. D. Please.
13. Why does the rise of online celebrities fascinate the youth
A. Because it promotes the youth’s self-confidence.
B. Because they possess certain performance skills.
C. Because they tend to ignore their academic studies.
D. Because it presents a potential path to success.
14. What challenges might these so-called stars face
A They might face increased academic pressure.
B. Their future potential might be damaged.
C. They might get tired of public attention.
D. Their future employers might laugh at them.
15. What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A. Change does not happen over time. B. Being qualified ensures success.
C. Trends can promote learning. D. Addiction affects a generation.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How can anyone feel bored in a world with social media, streaming movies, on-demand TV shows, and almost every book available for download It sounds contradictory, but according to a study by Katy Y. Y. Tam and Michael Inzlicht in Communications Psychology, digital media actually increases our boredom. _____16_____
Researchers suggest that easy access to entertainment raises our standard for what we consider engaging. _____17_____ Engaging in less stimulating activities, such as reading a book or attending a class, feels even more boring compared to the digital age's heightened stimulation levels.
Scrolling through TikTok, for example, breaks our attention and makes it hard to focus. Constantly switching between videos, dealing with notifications (通知), and responding to texts disrupts our ability to engage deeply with content. _____18_____ “Digital devices intensify boredom by disrupting attention,” the researchers explain.
Tam and Inzlicht argue that digital media increases boredom by dividing our attention, raising desired engagement levels, reducing our sense of meaning, and serving as an ineffective boredom coping strategy. Supporting this, a report from Radboud University in the Netherlands found that phone usage often worsens feelings of boredom and fatigue.
_____19_____ When we engage in these activities we might not notice how much time we spend on them. When we scroll through content endlessly trying to escape boredom, it's important to reflect on how we feel afterward. Did the activity actually satisfy us, or did it just keep us busy until we felt bored again
Tam suggests that for more meaningful and less boring experiences with digital media, we should seek longer-form content for deeper immersion. However, due to shorter attention spans, this is more challenging than before. _____20_____ Like an immersive movie theater experience, fully engaging with online videos can provide greater satisfaction.
A. This phenomenon is not limited to a specific age group.
B. Sometimes, activities that don't fulfill us can still be very addictive.
C. Knowing we can be distracted at any moment further breaks our focus.
D. Access to instant information has changed how we view entertainment.
E. Like addicts, we long for ever-increasing excitement to feel entertained.
F. For a more enjoyable experience, focus on the content and minimize digital switching.
G. Since 2010, reports of boredom have increased dramatically with the rise of digitization.

第二节:读后续写(25 分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
A couple of months before I started high school, my parents gave me the greatest gift any teenage boy would ask for: a cellphone. I lived on that phone all summer. I always texted my friends, even at night. And I paid no attention to the people and things around myself. Being connected to the Internet was more important than being present.
So, you can imagine my displeasure when I learned what my dad had planned for our family vacation that year. It was not the Disneyland trip or beach vacation that I had been hoping for.“This year,” my dad said, “we’ll be doing something special, something I used to do with my dad when I was a kid. We’re going camping in the forest!”
His excitement was met with a disappointed sigh (失望的叹息),which was my communication style at that age. But he had made the decision and would not change his mind. I comforted myself by telling myself that it was still a vacation. I remained uninfluenced when they were busy preparing for the vacation.
My mind was on my phone, the texts flying back and forth. I focused on the screen in my hands so much that the first time I looked up was when we drove across a bridge on the trip to our campsite.
I looked out of the window and saw a fast-moving river. The air blowing into the car from the open windows was hot and smelt of trees. But that didn't matter to me. The reason why I had looked up was for something far more serious and annoying. My phone no longer had service. The signal was weak. During the last hour of the drive, there was no signal at all.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式作答。
My dad explained he had chosen a campsite that had no phone service.
