During our final part of the term studying theater and performance at the University of Leeds, I found myself standing outside Berkeley Court care home on a rainy afternoon with three course mates and an underdeveloped idea. We planned to do sensory stimulation workshops with the residents living with dementia (痴呆), in an attempt to inspire memory and social engagement.
I had a CD player under my arm because we had decided to play music at the end of the program. If the average age of the residents was about 80, I thought they probably would have been listening to Frank Sinatra in their late 20s. We went with My Way because we all recognized it was energetic enough.
Some residents were almost nonverbal, some were clearly experiencing hallucinations (幻觉), some were happy to see us and some were not. Sheepishly putting the song lyrics on each table “just in case” anyone fancied singing along, I remember thinking that we had probably got this very wrong. I moved quietly to the back of the room and hesitantly pressed play.
It was as if a spell had been cast. Nearly everyone in the room stood up and sang what seemed like every word. The song sheets remained untouched. I was deeply moved. Looking to either side of me, I saw I wasn’t the only one with tears in my eyes. Many of the residents were now communicating with far greater clarity than they had been seconds before. It felt, and looked, like magic.
Now I am an actor. Creating work for, or about, people living with dementia has formed a fixed part of my career over the past decade. That moment at Berkeley Court fundamentally changed my life.
4. Why did the author come to Berkeley Court care home
A. To help with medical research.
B. To show his regard for senior residents.
C. To participate in a musical performance.
D. To provide dementia intervention and care.
5. What did the author consider when choosing the music
A The release date. B. The easy lyrics. C. The touching beat. D. The player’s quality.
6. How did the author feel before playing the song
A. Excited. B. Ashamed. C. Doubtful. D. Confident.
7. What can we know about the author’s moment at Berkeley Court
A. It had little significant effect on the author’s career.
B. It made the author decide to become a music teacher.
C. It inspired the author to focus on creating work related to dementia.
D. It convinced the author to abandon the idea of working with the elderly.

If just looking at honeycomb (蜂巢) is enough to make you feel uncomfortable or afraid, you might suffer from trypophobia (密集恐惧症). Researchers from the University of Essex surveyed 283 people aged 19 to 22. The participants were shown images of a lotus seed pod (莲篷) and honeycomb, which are often said to trigger trypophobia. The participants were then asked 17 questions of the standard Trypophobia Questionnaire in which they rated how strongly they felt about the trypophobia images. It includes common trypophobia reactions like “feel like panicking” or “feel sick”.
The researchers discovered that those who had already heard of trypophobia were more upset by images of crowded small holes and were more likely to be trypophobia. Their results support the idea that trypophobia is a socially learned fear, rather than something we are born with.
Trypophobia is not yet a medically recognized condition, but since it was first studied in 2013 it has spread widely on the internet. The researchers point out: that a dislike: of images of closely packed holds was more common among women and young people who snakes, the researchers suggest that social media teaches people to be scared of clustered holes.
However, Dr Coles said, “Social learning is a contributor, not the only explanation.” Researchers have suggested some theories to explain why trypophobia might arise from the internet. One is Dr Cole’s original suggestion from 2013, called the aposematism theory, which points out the similarity between patterns that induce trypophobia and the patterns of dangerous animals. The patterns on poison frogs and snakes ear all bring about trypophobia responses. This suggests that the fear might be a natural reaction to features often found in dangerous animals.
However, if you do find yourself suffering: from trypophobia, there is still some hope. Dr Cole said that he used to experience trypophobia but is now completely unaffected by trypophobia images, having spent so much time looking at them.
8. Which aspect of participants does the Trypophobia Questionnaire measure
A. Their levels of trypophobia. B. Their reasons for trypophobia.
C. Their attitude towards trypophobia. D. Their knowledge about trypophobia.
9. What do the researchers find out about trypophobia
A. Its health impact is lasting. B. It is primarily a medical condition:
C. Its spread is driven by the internet. D. It might lead to: growing social anxiety.
10. What does the underlined word “induce” probably mean in paragraph 4
A. Cause. B. Introduce. C. Quit. D. Spread.
11. What is Dr Cole’s advice to people affected by trypophobia
A. Avoid social media. B. Increase exposure to related photos.
C. Take medications as directed. D. Search for a mental health professional.
D
Suppose you get a new shirt without planning on a new jacket — what then You were content with your old jacket, but once you pair it with the new shirt, it suddenly seems worn out. Then you can’t help buying a new jacket or even more to better fit the shirt. Before you realize it, you have a whole new wardrobe, and maybe an empty bank account.
This is called the Diderot Effect. Denis Diderot, a well-known French philosopher, was too poor to afford a dowry (嫁妆) for his daughter. His only valuable possessions were books. Hearing of Diderot’s economic troubles, Catherine the Great, the Empress of Russia, offered to buy his library at a high price. Shortly after this lucky sale, Diderot bought a new dressing gown which had a huge influence on his life. As he wrote in the article in 1769, the new dressing gown made his other belongings seem old and unattractive. His need for unity left him with a desire to improve his stuff so that it matched his new dressing gown.
According to many social scientists, it resulted from a psychological need for our possessions to go together and to show our self-image. In 1988, anthropologist (人类学家) Grant McCracken coined the term “the Diderot Effect” to describe this need and its influence on consumerism.
Marketers make use of this need by displaying products in what McCracken calls Diderot Unities. An example is a Swedish furniture company, whose marketing uses two kinds of Diderot Unities in its shops, websites and catalogues (目录). One is dividing items like lamps and carpets into various furniture “families”. The other is displaying items in fully furnished rooms, where shops try to create the Diderot Effect, making the buyer want the entire package.
We may sometimes give in to the Diderot Effect, but knowing it exists can help us control its effects, so we don’t end up regretting our purchases. Before buying something, ask yourself, is it necessary Then, buy items that match what you already have. And remind yourself that a new chair won’t transform your bedroom into a showroom!
12. What is the function of paragraph 1
A. To explain a term. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To present a finding. D. To raise a problem.
13. Which of the following may be a typical example of the Diderot Effect
A. Showing off what one has bought. B. Regretting for all that has been bought.
C. Tending to buy unnecessary items. D. Looking down upon one’s own self-image.
14. How does the Swedish company use Diderot Unities in marketing
A. By displaying items alone. B. By offering catalogues on items.
C. By focusing on one furniture style. D. By grouping items into “families” and rooms.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Consumerism: the more, the better B. Keep an eye on your bank account
C. The Diderot Effect: a double-edged sword D. Have you ever given in to the Diderot Effect

How to be a good basketball player

Identify and work on improving your weak spots

B. The best way to improve as a basketball player is to find a mate.

D. For the most part, the right dribbling posture means staying balanced.
E. However, improving your basketball skills might be harder than you think.

Recently divorced, I had no job and was on my way downtown to go the rounds of the employment offices. I sat down in the streetcar — and there against the seat was a beautiful silk umbrella with a silver handle.
I got off the streetcar in a downpour and thankfully opened the umbrella to protect myself. I examined the handle and saw a name carved on it. Then I searched a telephone book for the name on the umbrella and found it. I called and a lady answered.
She said in surprise that it was her umbrella, which her parents, now dead, had given her for a birthday present and it had been stolen from her locker at school (she was a teacher) more than a year before.
I managed to find her and gave the umbrella back to her. She took the umbrella, and her eyes were filled with tears. The teacher wanted to give me a reward, but I declined her. We talked for a while, and I left after giving her my address at her request.
My last job ended the day before Christmas, my thirty-dollar rent was soon due, and I had fifteen dollars to my name — which Peggy and I would need for food. I had already purchased my daughter a small tree, and we were going to decorate it that night.
The air was full of the sound of Christmas merriment as I walked from the streetcar to my small apartment. Bells rang and children shouted in the cold dusk of the evening, and windows were lighted and everyone was running and laughing. But there should be no Christmas for me, I knew, no gifts, no remembrance what so ever.
I felt so helpless and so lonely. What was to become of us We would have only hamburgers for our Christmas dinner tomorrow. I stood in the cold little kitchen, misery overwhelmed me.

【47 题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
Suddenly, the doorbell rang and I ran to answer it, only to find a pile of boxes beside the door. “It must be a mistake,” I said, staring at these boxes. With curiosity, Peggy and I sat on the floor and opened them. A huge doll, three times the size of the one I had bought for her. Gloves. Candy. A beautiful leather purse. Incredible! I looked for the name of the sender. Inside one box was a note which read “Thanks for the lost umbrella and wish you a merry Christmas.” It was the teacher who gave me the surprise.
Seeing these surprises from the teacher, I knew we would have food and ornaments (装饰品 ) for this Christmas. Our dinner that night was the most delicious I had ever eaten. I forgot I had no money for the rent and only fifteen dollars in my purse and no job. My daughter and I ate and laughed together in happiness. Then we decorated the little tree with those ornaments and marveled at it. I put Peggy to bed and set up her gifts around the tree and a sweet peace flooded me. I had some hope again.
