Bike Tour of the Hidden Gems of Amsterdam
Time
Wednesday, July 11, at 13:00—16:00
Meeting point
Mike’s Tours, Oosterdoksstraat 106,1011DK Amsterdam
About the tour
Amsterdam is famous for its biking culture and art scene. During this fun three-hour bike tour,
which covers 12 km (8 miles), you’ll experience the attractions in a relaxed group setting, with a
few extra surprises along the way. With your local guide, you’ll go on an Urban Adventure
through parts of Amsterdam the average tourist doesn’t see. Passing by unique architecture (both
3
old and new), centuries-old industrial zones and former shipyards, you’ll discover some of the
hidden urban gems of Amsterdam.
We set off at Central Station, which is convenient if you are using public transport as all of
the main transport methods have stops there. Once you’ve been fitted out with a traditional Dutch
bike, we will bike across to the Western part of the city exploring the 17th Century harbour area of
Prinseneiland and the working class neighbourhood of Jordaan.
We will take a short ferry (轮 渡 ) ride across the IJ to see some of the up-and-coming
locations of the former shipyards of Amsterdam North. Here you will see some of the industrial
buildings. These areas are also well-known for their impressive street art. As part of this tour, you
will have the opportunity to create your own artistic masterpieces, as in the north, anything goes,
as long as it’s beautiful.
21. How long will the bike tour last
A. Two hours. B. Three hours. C. Six hours. D. Eight hours.
22. Where does the bike tour start
A. Jordaan. B. Mike’s Tours. C. Prinseneiland. D. Central Station.
23. What is a feature of the areas in Amsterdam North explored during the tour
A. They offer ferry rides free of charge. B. They have no public transport at night.
C. They are famous for amazing street art. D. They are crowded with foreign visitors.

Every year around August, millions of teens take their parents to stores to buy new clothes
for the start of the school year. Not every parent can afford this, and some teens are forced to go to
school in the same clothes they wore last year. The obvious differences in clothes cause
differences among students. There is a simple solution to this problem; school uniforms (校服).
I know from personal experience and surveys that wearing uniforms creates a sense of
equality among peers (同龄人).
From sixth grade until I graduated from senior high school, I attended a school that required
students to wear uniforms. The uniform was very simple: dark brown shoes, green-brown pants,
and a white shirt. The uniform left little room for any kind of self-expression, especially through
clothes.
However, I learned how to stand out by expressing myself through my personality, art, and
4
sports. I did not know I could draw until the sixth grade. I also would never have learned of my
musical abilities if it hadn’t been for my desire to find ways to express myself. Uniforms taught
me that I was myself, except what I wore.
Uniforms also contribute to a much safer learning environment. I remember a particular event
that happened in my junior high school. A man ran away from prison and wanted to hide in the
gym of our school. Luckily, cameras all over the school quickly found the stranger before any
danger could ever happen as he was out of place. School officials kept the man locked inside our
gym until the police came to take him back to prison.
Uniforms help provide a better educational experience for all students no matter what race,
culture, or economic class (经济阶层). In closing, wearing uniforms is good for both schools and
students.
24. How does the author introduce the topic
A. By explaining a basic rule.B. By challenging others’ views.
C. By describing a common problem. D. By sharing his parents’ experience.
25. Which of the following could the author agree with
A. Uniforms should be more modern. B. Uniforms can help shape better students.
C. Uniforms are popular with students. D. Uniforms are bad for self-development.
26. What do the underlined words “out of place” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Dressing differently. B. Standing straight.
C. Running fast. D. Breathing heavily.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To record his high school life. B. To show his supportive view towards uniforms.
C. To ask students to like what they wear. D. To introduce high school uniforms.

Joe DiMaggio was one of the greatest hitters in baseball history. A three-time winner of the
Most Valuable Player award, DiMaggio was selected to the Major League All-Star team in each of
his thirteen seasons. He is best known for his remarkable performance during the 1941 season.
I recently heard a little-known story about how DiMaggio acquired his exceptional ability. As
the story goes, a reporter was interviewing DiMaggio at his home and asked him what it felt like
to be such a “natural hitter”. Without saying a word, he dragged the reporter downstairs. In the
5
shadows of the basement, DiMaggio picked up a bat and began to repeat a series of practice
swings. Before each swing, he would call out a particular pitch such as “fastball, low and away” or
“slider, inside” and adjust his approach accordingly.
Once he finished the routine DiMaggio set the bat down, picked up a piece of chalk, and
scratched a tally mark on the wall. Then he flicked on the lights to reveal thousands of tally marks
covering the basement walls. Supposedly, DiMaggio then looked at the reporter and said, “Don’t
you ever tell me that I’m a natural hitter again.”
We love stories like this — stories that highlight how remarkable success is the product of
effort and perseverance. In recent years, the study of hard work has developed into a scientific
pursuit. Experts have begun to refer to focused and effortful training as “deliberate practice” and it
is widely considered to be the recipe for success.
There is no doubt that deliberate practice can be the recipe for success, but only under certain
conditions. If we are serious about maximizing our potential, then we need to know when
deliberate practice makes the difference between success and failure and when it doesn’t. Before
we can capture the power of deliberate practice, we need to understand its limitations. In highly
competitive fields, deliberate practice is often necessary, but not sufficient for success.
28. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. DiMaggio’s life experience. B. DiMaggio’s personal struggle.
C. The great popularity of DiMaggio. D. The great achievement of DiMaggio.
29. Why did DiMaggio show a series of practice swings to the reporter
A. To show his brilliant skills. B. To show his poor conditions.
C. To prove he wasn’t a genius indeed. D. To prove he wasn’t excellent indeed.
30. What does the author want to tell us by sharing DiMaggio’s story
A. Perseverance leads to success. B. Genius comes from hard work.
C. Your hard work will pay off in the end. D. Diligence makes up for a lack of talent.
31. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to deliberate practice
A. Doubtful. B. Confused. C. Objective. D. Ambiguous.
D
After bikes and umbrellas are made sharable across China, some companies started eyeing
the fitness market, so shared gym rooms have hit the streets in Beijing.
6
Unlike common gyms that provide large, open spaces for many members to share at the same
time, the newly built shared gym rooms are small, stand-alone rooms for a person to use, often set
up near living communities.
Every four-square-meter room is equipped with a treadmill (跑步机), an air cleaner, a mirror,
a television and an air conditioner, and users can let down the curtains for privacy. When
exercising, users can listen to music, watch movies and check emails by connecting to the Internet
by the screen fixed on the treadmill. There’s no shower or washbasin.
Similar to using a shared bike, users can locate a shared gym room by smartphone application,
book a room in advance and then need to scan a QR code for use. A refundable deposit (保证金)
of 99 yuan is required, and users are charged 1 yuan every 5 minutes.
The shared gym rooms are created by Misspao, a Beijing-based technology company
founded in July. Within several months since it was founded, the company has already raised over
100 million yuan, Yicai Global reports. The idea of the shared fitness experience is not entirely
nascent. Last December, the Shanghai-based technology company VRUN set up shared treadmills
in office and apartment buildings.
The sharing economy is still becoming popular in China. According to Yicai Global,
confident investors are pouring millions into sharing start-ups. In March, the State Information
Center published a report which predicts that the total value of China’s sharing economy will see a
yearly growth of 40% in the coming years, and it is expected to make a great contribution to the
country’s GDP.
32. What makes the shared gym room different from the common one
A. Holding one person at a time. B. Standing in the living zone.
C. Offering open spaces. D. Having some advanced equipment.
33. What do people need to do to use the shared gym room
A. Let down curtains for privacy. B. Pay 100 yuan first.
C. Use a smartphone. D. Have a shower before exercise.
34. What does the underlined word “nascent” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Simple. B. Popular. C. Satisfying. D. New.
35. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text
A. To advertise a technology company.
7
B. To introduce shared gym rooms.
C. To support the shared gym rooms.
D. To predict the future of shared gym rooms.

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his
breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird ” Mum asked him. “We will have an English
spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100
scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am
well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school.
At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote
it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution ” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers
now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize
today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was
an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high
when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his
spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribusion” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began
to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-O-N-T-R-I-B-U-S-I-O-N,” he whispered. He
spelled it wrong.
“What am I to do ” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master at
11
spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I’ll have to give my prize back, or
I will become an example for telling a lie.”
Staring at the full marks written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he
remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”

M: Go ahead.
W: Could you explain why you believe you’re a good fit for our team
M: Certainly. One of my strengths is building long-term customer relationships. For example,
when I headed the customer support department at my previous company, our team resolved about
three-quarters of our customer issues. I decided we needed better information and technical
preparation on our products. So after I conducted a few training exercises with our technical
department, we were able to do much better. Given the opportunity, I’m confident I can copy this
success here.
W: Amazing! What would you say is your weakness
M: Honestly, my main challenge has been time management. I find it hard to organize my time.
However, I have recently attended a workshop on time management and efficiency, which has
helped me overcome this issue.
W: Excellent! We will let you know our decision by next week.
M: Thank you. I look forward to hearing from you.

【原文】W: Dear Amy,
How are you I want to share something about my day at high school here in China.
Every morning, I wake up at 6:30 and after a quick breakfast, I take the bus to school.
Classes start at 8:00. We have a short break in the morning where I catch up with my friends.
Lunch is at 12:00, and I usually eat with my classmates in the school cafeteria. The food is
pretty good, and we have a lot of choices. In the afternoon, we have more classes like history,
geography, and science.
School ends at 5:00 p.m., but I often stay for extra-curricular activities. I joined the art club
and the basketball team. These activities have helped me make new friends and feel more
connected to the school community.
The workload in high school is heavier than in middle school, and I am still getting used to
the longer hours. However, my teachers and classmates are very supportive, which makes the
transition easier.
I miss you a lot and hope we can meet during the holidays. I can’t wait to tell you more about
my school life in person. Take care and write back soon!
Best wishes,
Liu Xin
