Portugal is one of Europe’s oldest nations. First-time visitors are usually struck by the friendliness of the people, the affordable food and wine, and the diversity of a country that is relatively easy to travel in; you can travel around Portugal in just a few days.
Portugal’s cities — especially Lisbon and Porto — show Portugal’s role as a superpower in the past that ruled the sea from Brazil to East Asia, though it’s not all about history: the cities have some of Europe’s best clubs and modern buildings. Head inland and there are endless possibilities, from touring the countryside to walking, cycling or rowing down inland rivers. It is the coast, however, that is the biggest attraction. From cliff-backed coves to endless hills of sand, you are seldom far from a beautiful beach. While its western Atlantic beach is still relatively unknown to those outside the surfing community, the calmer waters of the Algarve offer a relaxed beach experience.
One of the many advantages of Portugal is its year-round sunshine. Although the winter months can be a little cold, the sun is often shining and the skies are blue. The best time to travel to Portugal is during late spring (March to May) and early autumn (September to October) when the weather is warm. In the summer months, beaches are full of people, hotels are more expensive and the temperature can be unbearably hot.
Portugal’s relatively small size allows for much of the country to be seen within a short period of time while also allowing for it to be travelled in depth over a longer period. You can create your own schedules with Rough Guides if you are looking for something especially provided for you, or for more ideas check out our schedules to meet your every travelling wish!

“Don’t get dirty!” was once often shouted by parents angrily watching their children destroy their best clothes. It was unavoidable that children’s whites would turn brown before the day was over.
Today, many parents may secretly hope their children can have the chance to pick up a bit of dirt. With the rise of city life, and the attraction of video games and social media, contact with nature is much less than in the past. For many, there is simply no opportunity to get muddy. According to recent research, the dirt outside contains friendly microorganisms (微生物) that can train the immune system (免疫系统) and build the body against illnesses, such as anxiety.
The findings show that outdoor exercise is not only beneficial because of the chance to run around free, but certain natural materials, such as soil and mud, also have powerful microorganisms which have positive effects on children’s health. Outdoor play can also offer valuable learning experiences. For example, the act of rubbing and shaping materials like mud or sand can help children develop their senses and movement.
Such activities — away from the house or classroom — may also help children to find ways to deal with emotions that may be hard to explore in other environments. So-called “sandtray therapy (沙盘疗法)”, which includes using sand to express one’s thoughts and feelings, is an accepted form of guidance for children who are struggling to express their inner feelings.
Surprisingly, people who spent most of their childhood in the countryside show a better reply to stressful events like public speaking compared with those who grew up in cities. “The people who grew up in cities are kind of ‘walking time bombs’ when facing the stress we meet today. However, people who have spent lots of time in nature since childhood generally make a quicker recovery and are more positive,” says Christopher A. Lowry, a professor of the University of Colorado Boulder.
8. What’s the author’s purpose of writing paragraph 1
A. To introduce the topic. B. To share an opinion.
C. To tell a funny story. D. To describe characters.
9. What is a benefit of outdoor exercise
A. Gaining learning experiences. B. Experiencing the inner emotions.
C. Changing the immune system. D. Discovering more microorganisms.
10. What makes some people called “walking time bombs”
A. They may cause danger to the public. B. They perform well in speaking in public.
C. They get affected by stress more easily. D. They keep a positive and energetic state all the time.
11. In which part of a website can you find the text
A. Culture. B. Health. C. Economy. D. Technology.

Some police departments in the United States are experimenting with AI tools to help them produce reports. Police officers who have tried the AI chatbots (聊天机器人) praise the technology as a time-saver. Yet some government lawyers, legal experts, and others have expressed concerns about the AI-produced reports.
Axon, known for its body cameras, has developed a chatbot that uses the same technology as ChatGPT. This AI tool, named Draft One, is being tested by officers like Matt Gilmore from Oklahoma City. He describes the AI chatbot as a “game changer” for police work. In the past, after completing a search, the officer would spend another 30 to 45 minutes writing up a report. “This meaningless work takes me ages!” Matt said. But this time he used AI and the process (过程) only took eight seconds. And he described the report as better and more exact than one he could have written himself.
However, Axon’s CEO, Rick Smith, also noted legal and ethical (道德的) concerns about the tool. Government lawyers advise the police to be careful with the tool. They want to make sure that police officers are responsible for writing their reports. Prosecutors (检察官) never want to get an officer on the stand who says, “Well, the AI wrote that. I didn’t.”
Chatbots that use AI technology are not mistake-free. Sometimes these chatbots can produce false information, which worries Andrew Ferguson, a law professor at American University. “I am concerned that the technology would cause police officers to be sort of less careful with their writing,” he said. A police report is important in determining whether a suspect is guilty (有罪的) or not. However, human-created police reports also have problems, and it is not yet known which kind of report writer, human or AI, is more dependable.
12. What is the main purpose of the article
A. To explain how AI chatbots work for the police.
B. To encourage the use of AI in police departments.
C. To discuss the advantages and concerns of AI tools in police reports.
D. To stress the legal and ethical problems of using AI in police reports.
13. According to the passage, what is one advantage of using AI to write police reports
A. It helps officers to complete a search.
B. It avoids the risk of false information.
C. It makes sure that reports are always right.
D. It frees officers from boring daily tasks.
14. What can we infer about AI technology from Paragraph 4
A. It may make police officers lose their jobs.
B. It may make officers less serious about their reporting.
C. It might make the police more careful with their writing.
D. It can produce reports more dependable than human-written ones.
15. What is the best title for this passage
A. The Future of AI Chatbots B. AI Chatbots Used in Police Reports
C. The Rise of AI Chatbots D. Technology Produced by AI Chatbots

How to Improve Your Focus While Studying
Many students find it difficult to focus when they are studying. With so many distractions around, like phones and noise, it’s easy to lose concentration. ____16____ Here are some simple tips that can help you focus better and make your study time more effective.
First, find a quiet and comfortable place to study. It could be a desk in your room, a library, or any place where you won’t be easily interrupted. ____17____ This means turning off the TV and putting your phone on silent mode or in another room. When you remove these distractions, your brain can pay full attention to your work.
____18____ Trying to study for hours without a break can actually make you tired and less productive. A good method is the “Pomodoro Technique”. You study for 25 minutes, and then you take a short 5-minute break. After four such sessions, you can take a longer break of 15 — 20 minutes. During your break, you can stretch, get a drink, or just relax.
Another helpful way is to set clear goals for each study session. Instead of just saying “I will study math,” tell yourself “I will finish these 10 math problems.” ____19____ It feels great to see what you have achieved, and this will keep you motivated.
Finally, make sure you get enough sleep and eat healthy food. Your brain is like an engine; it needs good fuel to run properly. If you are tired or hungry, it is much harder to concentrate. ____20____ By taking care of your body, you are also preparing your mind for successful studying.
Remember, improving your focus takes time and practice. Start with one or two of these tips, and you will slowly see a difference.
A. This will help you stay focused on your task.
B. However, there are ways to solve this problem.
C. Listening to music can help some people concentrate.
D. It is also important to take regular breaks while studying.
E. A healthy body and mind are the basics of good concentration.
F. You should also avoid things that might take your attention away.
G. Having a goal makes your study more purposeful and manageable.
