When our school announced the cross-country race last month, I felt anxious at first. Having always been the one watching from the side during sports events, I worried I’d fall behind and become a joke. But my best friend, Lina, who joined the race last year, encouraged me: “It’s not about winning — it’s about seeing how far you can go.” So I signed up.
On the race day the sky was gray, and a light wind was blowing. The 5-kilometer path went through the school’s forest, where the trees stood tall and the ground was covered with dry leaves. When the starting gun went off, I kept up with the group at first. But after 2 kilometers, my legs began to ache, and I had trouble breathing. Just then, the rain that started halfway made the path muddy, and I slipped twice, getting my shoes dirty. “I can’t do this,” I muttered, slowing down until I almost stopped.
Suddenly, someone tapped my shoulder. It was Ms. Wang, our favourite biology teacher, who was volunteering to guide runners. She handed me a bottle of water and said, “Your pace was good at the start — don’t let a little rain quit you. Remember, every step you take now is closer to the end, and the medal is waving to you at a short distance.” Her words impressed me. I took a sip of water, tightened my shoelaces, and started running again, this time focusing on the path ahead instead of my tired legs.
When I finally crossed the finish line, Lina ran over to hug me. I didn’t get a medal — I was one of the last to finish, but I felt proud. That day, I learned two things: courage isn’t the absence of fright, but moving forward even when you’re frightened, and a little kindness from others can go a long way.
9. What made me almost give up in the race
A. Rain-muddy path. B. Gray sky and wind.
C. Tall trees and dirty shoes. D. The starting gun.
10. How did Ms Wang help me
A. By tapping my shoulder. B. By encouraging me with words.
C. By telling me I was her favourite. D. By volunteering to guide runners.
11. What main lesson did the writer learn from the race
A. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
B. Teachers influence students more than friends.
C. Cross-country races are harder than other school sports.
D. True growth is facing fear and accepting others’ kindness.
C
The year 2025 was the hottest year ever recorded Scientists found that Earth’s average temperature was more than 1.5°C higher than it was before industrial development began. This is not just a one-year problem — the past ten years have been the warmest in history. What’s more worrying is that the climate is now changing faster than ever before.
Climate change does not only mean hotter weather. It also causes stronger storms longer droughts, rising sea levels, and changes in animal habitats. All these changes are mainly caused by human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas. These activities release greenhouse gases into the air, which trap heat and make the planet warmer.
One key cause is the greenhouse effect. Carbon dioxide is the most common greenhouse gas. It comes from cars, factories, power stations, and cutting down forests. Another important gas is methane. Although it makes up only 16% of human-caused emissions, it is 25 times more effective at trapping heat than carbon dioxide. Luckily, methane does not stay in the atmosphere for long — just about 12 years. That means if we reduce methane emissions, we can slow down global warming more quickly.
The effects of climate change are already clear around the world. In the Arctic, temperatures are rising four times faster than the global average. This causes sea ice to melt quickly, which affects wildlife and changes weather patterns. Warmer air holds more moisture, leading to heavier rain and snow—this increases the risk of floods, stronger hurricanes, and large snowstorms. In many places, forests are drying out and trees are dying. Wildfires are now occurring in areas where they were once uncommon.
To fight climate change, the world needs to act together. One important step is to move away from fossil fuels and turn to clean energy like wind and solar power. We can also travel in greener ways — using electric cars, buses, or trains, and building cities that are safe and easy for walking and biking. These actions will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Some scientists are even studying new technologies that might one day help cool the planet. But the most important thing is to act now, with both short-term actions and long-term plans.
12. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph
A. To show cold weather. B. To suggest green actions.
C. To describe rising temperatures. D. To explain scientific methods.
13. Why can cutting methane emissions help slow warming quickly
A. Because it pollutes little. B. Because it disappears fast.
C. Because it comes from cars. D. Because it is less common than CO2.
14. What does the fourth paragraph suggest about wildfires
A. They need wind. B. They grow weaker.
C They result from high temperatures. D. They break out in new areas.
15. What does the author think is the best way to solve climate change
A. Clean energy like wind and solar power.
B. Take both quick actions and long-term plans.
C. Study new technologies to cool the planet.
D. Walk and bike instead of travelling in vehicles.

It was a cold winter morning. Snow had fallen all night, covering the streets, trees, and roofs in white. The wind bit through Potter’s coat as he walked to school, his breath rising in small clouds. He pulled his scarf (围巾) higher, trying to keep warm.
Ahead on the icy road, an old man was riding a bicycle slowly. He wore a dark hat and held the handlebars tightly. Suddenly, the back wheel slipped — the man fell hard onto the ground and cried out in pain. Potter ran over at once. “Are you okay ” he asked. The man groaned (呻吟) and said his leg hurt badly.
Without thinking, Potter helped him up and called an ambulance. At the hospital, he stayed with the man while the doctor examined him. The man’s daughter arrived later and thanked Potter again and again. “You’re a good boy,” she said.
Potter left quickly and ran all the way to school. His clothes were wet, his hair messy, and his heart racing. When he turned the corner, he saw his classroom at the end of the hall.
段首语: The teacher stood by the door.
