For the first time in its history, the International Olympic Committee has allowed a team of refugees to
compete at the Games. All of the team’s members were forced to leave their home countries. Now they’ve come
together to compete under the Olympic flag instead.
Making it to the Olympics is something eighteen-year-old swimmer Yusra has always dreamed of. But just last
year, she was swimming for her life. She and her sister were forced to leave their home in Syria because of the
war there. They were trying to get to Greece in a rubber dinghy (橡皮艇) with eighteen other refugees, when their
boat broke down and began filling with water. Most of the people on board couldn’t swim, so she and her sister
jumped in to help push it to shore.
Three hours later, they made it to safety, and eventually to Germany as refugees. Refugees are people who
have left their home country because their lives are threatened by war, bad treatment or violence---often because of
their race, gender or beliefs. Around the world, more than 60 million people are in this situation. And some of them,
like Yusra, are elite athletes who have trained all their lives to compete at the highest level, only to have that chance
taken away.
Now, a team of ten, including swimmers, runners, and judokas from Syria, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Congo
have been given the chance to compete at the Games under the Olympic flag. They’ve also been given their own
coaches, officials, uniforms and a chef, all paid for by the IOC. And in the past few months they’ve been training
hard. The IOC says it wants the team to inspire and give hope to other refugees, and draw attention to the issues
millions of other around the world are facing. And these guys say they are up to the task whether they win gold or
not.

A. help the refugees to fulfill their dreams of winning the Olympic gold medal.
B. offer the refugees a chance to earn bread by themselves.
C. light a candle of hope for all the refugees in the world.

Living on the Florida Emerald Coast, people view a hurricane as a common thing. So it is not unusual for a
family to have several full gas cans and bottled water stored in their houses all summer.
Though unwilling to evacuate from a hurricane, on September 15,my family was forced to leave our home for
my grandfather's house several miles away. We spent the early part of that evening watching the hurricane draw
closer on the Weather Channel. Around nine o'clock, a loud sound shook the house, turned over the roof and carried
it off. Soon came an indoor rainstorm.
Realizing the damage, my grandfather began to be afraid. The storm had started, but he still ran out into the
heavy rain and wind to see how much of the roof was left. We got him back inside. I had never seen him so scared.
Mom finally asked him to lie down in his room.
The leak had progressed rapidly. It soon became a race against time to protect what was saved. Some people
may think it necessary to save material things, but I hoped to save those items with emotional value, such as the

photos. I still feared the storm, but I more feared the influence it brought.
The next morning, it started to clear up. Thankfully, my family weathered the storm, though the same could
not be said for the house. Only the wooden beams remained, but inside many of his things were safe. My mom and
I had worked tirelessly through the night.
It was late, but we were still unwilling to go to bed. We discussed the rebuilding of the house. Under the
beautiful sky, we suggested looking after my grandfather more often in the future. After this disaster, I realized the
truth that the hurricane itself was not so terrible if we loved each other.

C. To protect their houses well. D. To be prepared for hurricanes.

C. Came safely through. D. Suffered seriously from.
11. What may the author learn from the experience
A. Family love is powerful. B. Take things as they come.
C. Good health is over wealth. D. Lost time is never found again.

New evidence suggests that studying Chinese and learning to write Chinese characters may train cognitive (认
知的) abilities, which are not developed by learning other languages and writing systems.
A study conducted by researchers from the UK’s Wellcome Trust found that people who speak Chinese use
both temporal lobes (颞叶) of their brain to understand the language. This is very different from English-language
speakers who use only the left temporal lobe. Speakers of Chinese use intonation (语调) to tell between completely
different meanings of particular words, which needs stronger cognitive abilities.
Besides, the practice of handwriting, especially of Chinese characters, will aid the development of motor skills,
learning shapes and letters and will keep the mind sharp. Through the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging,
researchers found that neural (神经的) activity in children who practiced printing letters by hand was more
strengthened than those who just looked at pared with English, mostly written in line and from left to
第 6页/共 12页
right, Chinese characters have more complex in structure (复杂的结构). Their writing involves strokes (笔画) in
all four directions: up, down, left, and right. The movement of the fingers and hand helps improve neural activity in
the working, thinking, and memory of the brain of the learners.
Evidence also suggests that there is a connection between the learning of Chinese and math skills. Researchers
from New Zealand noticed that Asian children educated in their own languages appear to have gained a greater
understanding of math ideas than English-speaking children. During the natural learning process of Chinese, the
student is learning basic math ideas. Math skills are included in character writing because it includes skills such as
counting, grouping, ordering, and identifying similarities and differences.
While the research on the relationship between the learning of Chinese and cognition is not yet fully clear,
there is good evidence to suggest that learning Chinese tones and characters represents an added challenge to
language learning.
12. What is the text centred on
A. Why Asian children are better at math test.
B. Why Chinese is a difficult language to learn.
C. How learning Chinese benefits our cognition.
D How Chinese writing differs from English writing.
13. What does the study by UK’s Wellcome Trust show
A. English speakers should learn Chinese.
B. Chinese has more intonations than English.
C. Using Chinese needs a higher-level brain activity.
D. Mastering different meanings of Chinese is difficult.
14. Why is learning Chinese beneficial to solving math problems
A. They need quite different cognitive abilities. B. Chinese writing looks like math symbols.
C. Chinese children naturally do well in math. D. They share several key cognitive abilities.
15. How is the text mainly developed
A. By offering supporting findings. B. By comparing former research.
C. By discussing problems and solutions. D. By listing advantages and disadvantages.

My heart sank when I received the news—no salary again. How would I manage the increasing bills, the
groceries and my children’s needs The future seemed hopeless. With a heavy heart, I hurried to pick up my two
children, my mind racing wildly.
That’s when I saw it—a wallet, lying on the sidewalk. It was as if fate had thrown me a lifeline (救生索).
Hope came to me as I approached it. The wallet was large, and when I opened it, my eyes widened in disbelief at
the sight of a large amount of cash inside it. I hesitated for a moment, torn between the immediate relief that this
money promised and the morality (道德) of keeping it.
Curiosity led me to search through the wallet. The things it contained were a photo and a couple of business
cards. No matter how much I wanted to take the contents, my moral principles and inner voice told me not to do
this. The decision became clear; I couldn’t keep this money. It wasn’t rightfully mine.
I picked out a business card. The name and number were there. With a deep breath, I dialed the number and
explained my find to the voice on the other end. The voice came, completely emotionless, warning that they would
come to me. He hung up without even saying “thank you”. I was angry with the impoliteness. I even regretted my
decision, but my conscience (良知) did not allow me to go back on my choice. I had told the voice where I lived
and went to get my children.
Shortly after we arrived home, a large black car suddenly pulled up to our house. The driver got out and
knocked on the door. When I opened it, the driver told me that the owner of the wallet wanted me to personally
hand over his wallet.
