Tove Jansson, the Finnish writer and artist, wrote her first “Moomin” story, featuring a snout-nosed troll (长鼻子精灵) living in a magical land threatened by a rising flood in 1940. This was eventually published in 1945 as The Little Trolls and the Great Flood, the first of nine Moomin books that became Finnish literary classics. The Moomin characters achieved international recognition when Jansson adapted them into a comic series for The Evening News in London in 1954, and saw renewed popularity again in the 1990s with an animated series and feature film.
However, Jansson’s life as an artist and peace activist is far less well-known. The newly opened exhibition in Paris, “Houses of Tove Jansson”, aimed to bring more attention to her work and the utopian vision (乌托邦愿景) that influenced it. It featured Moomin illustrations and cartoons, along with Jansson’s paintings, and designs for costumes and sets — many of them expressing a wish for peace and harmony.
Exhibit organizer Tuukka Laurila said that many characters in the Moomin series were inspired by Jansson’s personal relationships. Moomin papa and Moomin mother are often seen as representations of Jansson’s parents. Snufkin is inspired by Atos Wiritanen, one of Tove Jansson’s close friends.
Born in Helsinki in 1914, Jansson began drawing at a young age and worked with magazines, creating around 100 illustrations. From 1944, she lived for half the year on Klovharun, a tiny island with only one house, enjoying a simple lifestyle and welcoming guests. This open-door friendliness is mirrored in the Moomin stories, where home symbolizes safety yet faces various threats.
Laurila shared that “Houses of Tove Jansson” encouraged visitors to explore her creativity and the important topics in her Moomin universe, from friendship to environmental awareness, making her impact significant even today. “She’s describing what we’re currently going through,” she added, “but it’s amazing to think that she wrote these about 80 years ago.”
4. What can be known about the Moomin characters

A simple handshake may reveal more than just a greeting. A new study suggests that the way people shake hands could unconsciously communicate emotions and personality characteristics.
Dr. Emily Carter, a behavioral psychologist leading the research, studies non-verbal (非口头的) communication and its role in relationships. Her curiosity about handshakes began during a leadership workshop. She noticed that participants’ handshakes varied significantly, and she wondered if these differences might carry meaningful information. To test her idea, she and her team conducted an experiment.
The researchers found 200 volunteers and recorded their handshakes using high-speed cameras and pressure sensors. Participants were asked to shake hands with strangers, friends, and colleagues under different situations, such as meeting for the first time, resolving a conflict, or celebrating success. The team also measured participants’ heart rates and skin reactions to track emotional responses.
The findings were revealing. Strong, firm handshakes were often associated with confidence and enthusiasm, while weaker handshakes tended to signal nervousness or discomfort. Notably, longer handshakes with slight upward movements were linked to excitement, while short, rigid ones reflected tension. The study also illustrated that the temperature and moisture (湿度) of a person’s hand could reflect their emotional state. Warmer, slightly sweaty hands were more common when participants felt anxious or stressed, while cooler, dry hands were linked to calmness.
Carter believes these insights have practical applications. For instance, business professionals could use handshake analysis to better understand their clients’ emotions during negotiations. Similarly, advisors might use it as a tool to understand a client’s emotional state without relying only on verbal communication.
However, Carter cautions that handshakes are just one piece of the puzzle. “Human interaction is complex, and something as simple as a handshake can speak volumes,” she says. As scientists continue to explore the mysteries of non-verbal communication, it’s clear that no single gesture can tell the whole story.
8. What’s the function of paragraph 1
A. To describe an experiment. B. To introduce the main topic.
C. To tell a true a story. D. To give an example.
9. Why did Dr. Emily and her team decide to conduct an experiment
A. To test if the differences in handshakes carry meaningful information.
B. To study the exact definition of non-verbal communication.
C. To record the heart rates of people in different social situations.
D. To help business professionals understand their clients better.
10. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. The specific steps of the experiment.
B. How to use handshake analysis in daily life.
C. The main results of the experiment.
D. How to shake hands with different people.
11. What does the last paragraph show
A. Handshake analysis has no real value.
B. A single gesture cannot explain everything.
C. Non-verbal communication has been fully explored by scientists.
D. Handshakes are the most important part of non-verbal communication.
D
Imagine a world where food security relies on just a few crops. This is not fiction but our current path. Agricultural biodiversity—the lifeblood of flexible ecosystems—is collapsing due to climate change, habitat destruction, and industrial farming. Over 75% of plant genetic diversity has disappeared in a century, with just nine species now dominating global crop production. Such reliance on uniform crops leaves food systems open to pests, diseases, and climate extremes.
Genetic diversity acts as a natural barrier against environmental changes. Different crop varieties respond differently to stressors, providing farmers with options to manage risks. When one crop fails, others can substitute it, helping to safeguard harvests and livelihoods. However, as the diversity on our farms drops, farmers have fewer tools to adapt to the growing challenge brought on by environmental change.
The fall brings numerous consequences, and human health suffers as well. Global diets now center on energy-rich but nutrient-poor food, resulting in 11 million annual diet-related deaths. And reduced access to diverse fruits and vegetables worsens malnutrition (营养不良) globally.
Turning the trend around requires a multi-aspect approach that combines conservation, sustainable farming practices, and scientific innovation. Central to these efforts is the conservation of genetic resources—the seeds, genes, and living organisms that sustain our food systems. The global gene bank network developed by CGIAR conserves over 700,000 accessions of more than 3000 locally important and less well-known plant species. Sending samples out to thousands of requesters worldwide every year, it brings diversity back into communities, fields, and landscapes. We ourselves also need to bring biodiversity back into our fields. Agro-ecological (农业生态的)practices, such as crop alternation, intercropping, and agroforestry, capitalize on the power of biodiversity to enhance soil health, control pests, and improve water use efficiency.
Biodiversity is our insurance against environmental uncertainty. But like any insurance, it only works if we maintain it. Today’s choices determine tomorrow’s food recovery capacity. By boosting conservation and innovation, we can safeguard the genetic foundation of our survival. The seeds of the future are in our hands—let them thrive.
12. What is discussed about global agriculture
A. The mismatch of food supply and demand. B. The decline of agricultural biodiversity.
C. The lack of advanced agricultural technology. D. The overuse of chemical fertilizers in farming.
13. What does the underlined word “substitute” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Replace. B. Disturb. C. Suspect. D. Cheat.
14. What is the benefit of agroecological practices mentioned in Paragraph 4
A. Canceling the global gene bank network.
B. Reducing the need for scientific innovation.
C. Using biodiversity to improve farm conditions.
D. Only increasing the production of the nine dominant crop species.
15. What is the main idea of the passage
A. It introduces the causes of diet-related deaths and ways to reduce malnutrition.
B. It describes the history of the global gene bank network and its achievements.
C. It discusses the negative effects of industrial farming on the environment.
D. It explains the importance of agricultural biodiversity and how to protect it.

Daniel was the new boy in our school. The teacher assigned me to him. He couldn’t hear or talk, so he had his mom with him. She explained what professors were teaching in sign language. Sometimes I got caught staring at him and my friends teased me all day. I noticed him going everywhere all alone, with no friends at all. Sometimes I felt worried, maybe even concerned.
We were assigned as lab partners and surprisingly he wasn’t as bad as I thought. We would both sit quietly and do our work. But when it came to communication and his translator wasn’t there, it was a mess. At first, I could barely understand what he was doing with his hands. I could see in his eyes that he was getting annoyed at me. From trying to communicate with sign language, he moved to pictures and words. That worked well for both of us, but my drawing skills were not as good as his, so I stuck to words and gestures.
The second semester went by well and quickly. Daniel and I understood each other pretty well. I could understand some of his hand movements. I realized that Daniel was different from anyone I’d ever met, me included. Then he became my best friend and we both understood each other pretty well despite our differences.
But it was a pity that Daniel still couldn’t get along well with other classmates because of his disability. At first, I thought Daniel didn’t care about this. However, one thing happened later changed my mind. That was Elly’s birthday which was on the school day. The whole class sang the happy birthday song and shared a big cake together. When we were all immersed in laughter and fragrance, I noticed the admiration in Daniel’s eyes, which really hurt me. Later I learned from his mom that he never celebrated his birthday with friends. Hearing that, I determined to do something for him.
