English is the most widely spoken second language, with over a billion people speaking it as a non-native language. That means around twice as many people speak English as a second language than people who speak it as a first language.

Giorgio Morandi was one of the greatest artists in the history of Italy. He was the eldest of five children born into a middle-class family in Bologna, Italy. His early love of art upset his father, who wanted his son to work with him in his export business. Morandi attempted the business unsuccessfully in 1906.
After that, Morandi entered the Bologna Academy of Fine Arts in 1907. He continued his study with the support of his friends when his father suddenly passed away in 1908, forcing him to support his mother and younger sisters. During that time, he was introduced to Cubism and Futurism, which influenced his early work.
After he graduated from the Bologna Academy of Fine Arts in 1913, Morandi continued his study by traveling around Italy, especially to the Venice Biennale. Those tours would finally prove important, as much of Morandi’s exposure (接触) to painters came from published art works on the journey. He was particularly interested in the work of Impressionists like Claude Monet, as well as following greats such as Georges Seurat and Paul Cézanne.
After Morandi finished his traveling, he returned home and lived with his family. For many years, Morandi kept a peaceful daily routine. And he did most of his work in his workshop, a small room in a flat he shared with his mother and sisters.
Life wasn’t easy for him at first, but he quickly established himself as an important modern artist. His mastery of a skill of color, light and arrangement began to gain notice, shining in the face of present painting in the manner of abstraction (抽象). And he was named “one of the greatest painters living” by Roberto Longhi in 1934.
4. Why did Morandi’s early love of art worry his father
A. It took Morandi too much time.
B. His father didn’t have money to support Morandi.
C. His father wanted Morandi to follow in his footsteps.
D. There were no suitable art teachers for Morandi.
5. What did Morandi do in 1913
A. He tried his father’s business. B. He started his university life.
C. He traveled with his father. D. He finished his study in school.
6. What played a leading role in shaping Morandi as a successful modern artist
A. His love for his family. B. His tours around Italy.
C. His middle-class background. D. His exposure to his father’s business.
7. How does the author mainly develop the text
A. By asking questions. B. By providing examples.
C. By following time order. D. By making a comparison.
C
People are flying more than ever. From short trips to traveling around the globe many of us are on the move. But finding your way at the airport has never been easy in the US, due to crowding and a lot of tasks like checking in, taking care of baggage, screening and finding your gate. It is often difficult to get to where you are going. If you are in a wheelchair or visually challenged, it’s even harder.
The new terminal (航站楼) at Kansas City International Airport is designed to fix many of these shortcomings. The new facility features indoor play areas, changing rooms, and a quiet room for people who cannot handle the noise or activity of a busy airport. There is even a pet relief area for people traveling with animals. One innovation is the glass-walled jet bridge for people who are worried about travelling by planes. Moreover, for individuals who experience discomfort with the entire procedure of airports and air travel, there exist virtual simulators (模拟器) that enable these travelers to experience the process of boarding and taking off in a simulated environment.
Justin Meyer from the Kansas City Aviation Department stated that the new terminal has set a new standard for inclusivity (包容性) that travelers expect to see in airports. “The goal isn’t that we’re forever at the head of the line,” Meyer said. “My goal was just to improve the standard, so if someone else wants to build the most accessible airport in the world, they have to start from where Kansas City stopped. In the end, passengers win.”
While making airports more accessible to people with different abilities may seem to be expensive or difficult, the benefits certainly outweigh the costs. Accessible airports mean that more people and their families will be able to travel and then the skies will be friendly to all.
8. What is the function of paragraph 1
A To call on airports to improve their services.
B. To explain the background to the new terminal.
C. To stress the annoyance of frequent air travelers.
D. To show the complexity of boarding procedures.
9. Who are most likely to use the glass-walled jet bridge
A. People using a wheelchair. B. People accompanied by a pet.
C People travelling with their babies. D. People suffering from a fear of flying.
10. What can be inferred about the new terminal according to Justin Meyer
A. It needs further improvement.
B. It has the best passenger services.
C. It aims to lead to any place all over the world.
D. It sets a higher standard for airport services.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards the Kansas City International Airport’s practice
A. objective. B. negative. C. supportive. D. unconcerned
