Spend any time in London, England’s capital, and you’ll quickly gather that it’s a multicultural (多元文化的) community. Look around at your fellow passengers on the underground or the bus. They’re of every skin color and dress differently to one another. Listen, and you’ll hear many other languages besides English spoken. Some of these people will be tourists who are in London to see the sights. But others - in fact probably most - will be living their lives there, along with millions of others.
Along with white British people, there are Britons from, or with parents and grandparents from, the Caribbean, India, China and most other places. This makes London a wonderful place in which to live. The reason is that when people settle in a place, they don’t just buy a house and live there, but bring aspects of the culture of their “old country” with them.
A number of restaurants offering dishes from different parts of the world can be seen in London. You would come across French, Italian, Chinese, Indian eateries and even Polish restaurants in London.
However, London’s multiculturalism isn’t just about food. Many type s of people are gathered in one space, but the way they live differently shows in that space. They have different religious beliefs. Alongside one of the most famous old English churches, St Paul’s Cathedral, you’ll find mosques, temples and synagogues (犹太教堂) .
London even speaks its own special kind of English. Language experts created the term “Multicultural London English” to identify the dialect (方言) of English that appeared at the end of the last century.
All of this makes London a very surprising and varied place to call your home. But, in a way, this has long been true. In the 18th century, the compiler (编纂者) of the first English dictionary, Samuel Johnson, once said: “He who is tired of London is tired of life.”
8. What is the purpose of the author by describing the situation on the underground and bus
A. To show that London is a multicultural city.
B. To explain why London appeals to tourists.
C. To prove that London is a great place to live in.
D. To inform us of how the population of Britain is made up.
9. What happen to the people settling in London from other places
A. They are forced to give up their native language.
B. They find it easy to buy a house in the city.
C. They introduce cultural practices from their original country.
D. They make up the majority of the population in the city.
10 Which of the following could be used as proof of London’s multiculturalism
A. The city is home to the famous building St Paul’s Cathedral.
B. The city has become a favorite destination for tourists abroad
C. There are a variety of French restaurants in the city.
D. A new London dialect has appeared in recent years.
11. Why is Samuel Johnson mentioned in the last paragraph
A. To show what London was like in the 18th century.
B. To prove the cultural diversity of London from a historical aspect.
C. To inform the readers what to expect in London
D. To introduce the first dictionary he complied

When Adele released (发行) her 2011 single Someone Like You, this bittersweet song is popular with millions worldwide. More than a decade later, it remains one of her most popular songs. Her artistry, as well as that of many others who have mastered the art of making listeners feel moved with slow and emotional beats, has a way of managing the emotional pain of heartbreak and loss.
Listening to favorite songs could also reduce people’s feelings of pain, according to a new study published in the journal Frontiers in Pain Research. And the most effective pain relievers were found to be sad songs detailing bittersweet and emotional experiences.
“It doesn’t take the place of medicine when you have a headache, but music can help reduce your pain,” said Patrick Stroman, a professor at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He didn’t join in the study. “Unlike other medications,” he noted, “there is no side effect or risk in listening to music (just keep the volume at a reasonable level).”
The small study invited 63 young adults to bring one of their favorite songs. The researchers also had the young adults pick one of seven songs that the team considered relaxing and were unfamiliar to the study participants. All the while, the researchers stuck a hot object — similar to the pain of a boiling hot teacup on the participants’ skin — to their left inner forearms. When rating their experiences, people were more likely to report feeling less pain when listening to their favorite songs compared with hearing the unfamiliar relaxing songs.
With millions of songs available, one person’s favorite song is likely not the same as another. After interviewing the participants about the song they brought and their rating of pain, the researchers found people who listened to bittersweet and moving songs felt less pain than when they listened to songs with calming or cheerful themes (主题).
“It’s a very cool result,” said lead study author Darius Valevicius, a doctoral student of neurosciences at the University of Montreal. “I think it’s why I myself and probably many people choose to listen to bittersweet or even spiritual music.”
12. Why does the author mention Adele in the first paragraph
A. To reach a conclusion. B. To lead in the topic.
C. To offer a suggestion. D. To provide the background.
13. What is Stroman’s attitude to the effect of listening to music
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Unclear. D. Unconcerned.
14. What did the participants do in the new study
A. They reported their feelings of pain. B. They interviewed many musicians.
C. They made various kinds of teacups. D. They picked out the music they don't like.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. When Is the Best Time to Listen to Music
B. How Do You Create Popular Songs Quickly
C. The Best Way to Reduce Pain Might Be to Write Music
D. Certain Types of Music Could Help You Feel Less Pain

On a sunny afternoon her favourite neighbour, Mrs. Baker, visited her.
“I need your help, Callie,” Mrs. Baker said. “Do you know the empty lot (空地) down the street ” Callie nodded, smiling. The place is a mess, covered with rubbish. “The city is letting us use the lot for a community garden,” she explained. “We need help to clean up the lot on Saturday.”
“Sure, Mrs. Baker! ” Callie said cheerfully. “I will be happy to help you!”
Mrs. Baker looked pleased and said, “Thanks, Callie. We want to get the garden planted before summer. By then, adults and children in our community will have a good place to go.”
At school the next morning, Callie’s best friend Tamara was waiting for her in their classroom. Tamara said excitedly, “My mum bought tickets to go to Fun World this Saturday. She has an extra one for you!” The girls had been waiting for months for the new amusement park to open.
Callie sighed and worried about her problem for the rest of the day.
