Recently an old friend reached out to me to ask about the success I’ve had in my life (or at least what looks like success on social media XD) and how I achieved it. He has similar goals as me: get in shape, get into music more seriously, and be fluent in Japanese.
Though I haven’t entirely reached my long-term goals yet in any of these 3 ways, he’s seen that I’ve made some progress on my journey to achieving these goals and wanted my advice.
We had a nice hour and a half chat on the phone about this and it seemed like he was pretty motivated by the end of the chat. A week went by and he told me that he signed up for a personal fitness trainer, was studying music theory, and sent me clips of him studying Japanese. He’s posting regularly on social media about all the progress he’s making. He’s motivated and doing great!
At last I’ll have to remind him that progress isn’t linear (线性) and that he’ll finally meet with some challenges in the road, but I’m letting him enjoy the present progress in the meantime and will help him tackle them when that time comes.
I’m grateful for him giving me the opportunity to serve him and give him advice, and I’m grateful to see that he’s investing the time and money to promote his life. He even posted recently about how grateful he is with all the recent changes in his life.
Even if you’re still not where you want to be, there are a lot of people out there who want what you have and who are impressed with how far you’ve come. It’s extremely joyful to be aware how far you’ve come, be proud of yourself, and recognize how much you can help others achieve the same.
4. Why did the author’s friend contact him
A. To thank him for the advice on success.
B. To consult him about some proposals.
C. To require him to share his success on XD.
D. To ask for advice on how to set goals to achieve.
5. What does the underlined word “tackle” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. get over B. apply for C. focus on D. relate to
6. Which of the following can best describe the author’s friend
A. Anxious and outgoing. B. Responsible and wise.
C. Purposeful and active. D. Motivated and humorous.
7. What does the author mainly express in the last paragraph
A. You should make use of your advantages.
B. You should take pride in what others achieve.
C. You’ve come a lot further than you realize.
D. You should turn to others when you feel confused.
C
Meat, milk, cheese — just some of the things provided by goats. But now we can also add fire safety to this list. As wildfires damage increasingly large areas of the planet each year, goatherds (牧羊人) may offer a way of reducing the risk.
Wildfires are made possible by hot, dry weather conditions as well as a supply of dead plants that serve as fuel. We may have limited control over the former factor, but we can control the latter. Reducing the fuel load lowers the possibility of wildfires occurring, as well as the amount of damage caused. This is where we can turn to goats to search for a solution, which are being used for landscape management in a number of places around the world, including Greece, Spain, Portugal, Chile and a number of parts of the United States.
Goats have an extremely powerful digestive (消化的) system. Many kinds of plants that are dangerous to other animals can be easily eaten by goats. It’s not just fully-grown plants that goats are able to deal with: any seeds that pass through a goat can’t survive and will not grow. Human clearance teams have to worry about getting to the hard-to-reach places where plants grow but goats don’t. They are skilled mountain climbers and when standing on their hind legs, they can reach up to two metres to the plants that humans would struggle to reach. Because of this, using goats can reduce both the possibility of workplace accidents and the amount of money spent on fire protection measures. Goatherds have been found to clear some parts of land for a third of the price of human control teams.
Cost and safety aren’t the only benefits. Goats are quieter than grass-cutting machines and people usually prefer to see goats eating grass rather than litres of herbicide (除草剂). Children are often attracted to see the goats at work and this provides an opportunity to educate people about preventing wildfires.
8. Why can goats help to prevent wildfires
A. They are not afraid of bad weather. B. They are easily controlled by goatherds.
C. They have the strongest digestive system. D. They can remove dead plants causing fire.
9. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3
A. The fire protection measures that people often take.
B. The reasons why goats are used to prevent wildfires.
C. The difficulty human clearance teams have preventing fire.
D. The effects goats have on the natural balance of mountains.
10. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Herbicide will not be used to remove grass soon.
B. Children like goats because of their quiet character.
C. It’s a green way to prevent wildfires by using goats.
D. Herbicide works better than grass-cutting machines.
11 Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Firefighting Goats. B. Clever Goatherds.
C. Damage Caused by Wildfires. D. Ways to Prevent Disasters.
D
Do you like travelling to other places, cities and countries Many people do. Tourism is a huge industry —— it’s as large as or larger than the oil, food and car industries. It creates so many jobs that one in every ten people in the world works in tourism.
However for many people and places, tourism is not a completely positive thing. Some places receive millions of tourists a year, which leads to problems for local people. When tour buses block roads, it’s hard for local people to get to work or school. Often, international companies open up, and small shops and restaurants close down. Another problem is accommodation — in Barcelona and New York, for example, many flats and houses are used as tourist accommodation, so homes for local people have become expensive and hard to find.
Tourism can have an effect on the environment as well. Natural areas are ruined to make space to build hotels and tourist facilities, and building them consumes a lot of energy and resources. Historic buildings are damaged, such as those in Venice by large cruise ships (游轮) entering the city. These ships also do ham to animal and plant life. More tourism means more crowds, noise, rubbish and pollution.
Some governments have already taken actions. In Barcelona and New York, there are now limits on short-term rental accommodation. The number of cruise ships entering Venice is limited now too. Importantly, individual tourists can help by choosing better ways of visiting places. For example, if tourists visit Venice on a cruise ship but they sleep and eat all their meals on the ship, does the local community in Venice really benefit from their visit If not, it could be better to choose a different form of tourism, one that benefits the city and local people more.
Despite some problems, if we can make tourism more sustainable (可持续的), everyone can benefit from it, and people can continue to enjoy visiting these places in the future.
12. Why is it hard for New Yorkers to buy cheap houses
A. Because tourists buy local flats and houses.
B. Because many houses are needed for travelers.
C. Because the government provide little land to build houses.
D. Because the houses international companies sell are expensive.
13. Why are cruise ships mentioned in Paragraph 3
A. To stress plants and animals die from them.
B. To show tourism wastes energy and resources.
C. To explain why tourism is not environmentally friendly.
D. To suggest the necessity of preventing the development of tourism.
14. What does Paragraph 4 mainly stress about tourism
A. The cruise ship is not a good choice for tourists.
B. Tourism should be developed in a sustainable way.
C. Local community in Venice shows no interest in tourism.
D. Governments have done extremely well in developing tourism.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards tourism
A. Unclear. B. Disapproving. C. Doubtful. D. Positive.

【答案】Taishan Culture Lighting Up the Campus
To promote the students’ understanding of Taishan Culture and arouse our interest and enthusiasm, last Saturday our school launched a campaign, with the theme of “Taishan Culture into the Campus”.
Various activities were organized, such as learning local operas, paper-cutting and Chinese calligraphy, attracting a wide range of participation of the students. Many inheritors were also invited to show the intangible cultural heritage of Tai’an. Besides, an essay competition was held, where the students shared their own ideas and stories about Taishan Culture.
The campaign turned out to be a great success, from which all the students benefitted a lot. It has not only given us an insight into our cultural heritage, but also made us realize that it is our responsibility to preserve and promote the traditional Chinese culture.
