Digital financial services company Remitly recently determined the world’s friendliest nations in a new report. The company surveyed 3,000 people from 27 countries on their “agreeableness” (亲和性) from the popular Big 5 Personality Test in April. People were given a score between 1 and 40, the higher the score, the friendlier the country.
Estonia, 32.58
Estonia is ranked as one of the friendliest countries for travelers. Home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites and more than 1,000 islands, Estonia has friendly locals who are known to be respectful and polite to foreigners.
Belgium, 32.5
As a western European country at only 30,528 square kilometers, Belgium is known for its rich history and various attractions. English is easily spoken there, which makes it easy to meet locals. Belgians are known to be polite and social, so you can feel comfortable asking locals for directions.
Germany, 32.66
Some of Europe’s major rivers, like the Rhine and Danube, flow through Germany. Thanks to its central situation, Germany has more neighbors than any other European country. South Africa, 34.63
South Africa is also known as the “Rainbow Nation”. Since the air is fresh and the sunshine is in abundant supply, rainbows often appear after the rain. For Nancy, she was just doing what she loved. “I love teaching and it’s never boring,” she says. “Every day is different.” After her retirement, Nancy Jenkins will offer her help to children in need any time. Educators and experts worldwide are urging (督促) parents to take action to prevent children from being addicted to the Internet. Even kids admit to feeling better without electronic devices, such as pads and cellphones, and say they wish adults would do more to help them learn and grow without wasting too much time online. So where does this all leave us What’s a responsible parent to do
When it comes to kids and screens, there’s a big difference between children spending hours online without parental controls and children interacting with carefully selected content for 20 minutes at a time with a parent. Luckily, there’s also a lot of in-between.
Many parental control apps are designed to create safer online spaces for kids. It’s too early to say which helps most, but the most essential feature of any set of parental controls is the ability to use them to help kids grow and learn. Take Angel AI for example. Angel AI is an app expected out this fall that allows kids to explore the Internet while holding the digital hand of an AI built specifically to keep them out of harm’s way. Angel understands age-proper content and sensitive topics that are best handled by an adult. The content Angel looks at or creates is secured and no searches are linked to any personal information.
“We’re not in the business of taking the Internet away from kids; as any parent can prove, kids want what they can’t have,” Tim Estes, CEO of Angel AI, writes via email. “The online world also can be an incredibly valuable resource for kids, who risk missing out on key learning opportunities, as well as the chance to build healthy online habits, if they don’t explore the Internet earlier on in life.”
Parental control apps as a tool we can actually use for good, can be a sort of protective bubble for kids as they surf the Internet.
8. What does the underlined word “in-between” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Time spent on the Internet by kids.
B. Content suitable for children to select.
C. Advice on saving kids from the Internet.
D. Technology for managing kids’ screen time.
9. How does the author describe parental control apps
A. By making a prediction and suggesting solutions.
B. By giving an example and explaining how it works.
C. By bringing up a question and presenting the answers.
D. By comparing different apps and listing their advantages.
10. What’s the attitude of Tim Estes towards the Internet
A. Supportive. B. Fearful. C. Disapproving. D. Uncertain.
11. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text
A. To encourage parents to help their kids grow.
B. To call for the development of online learning.
C. To warn parents to keep kids away from the Internet.
D. To introduce a new way to guide children’s Internet use.

A new scientific study suggests that global warming is changing the rotation (旋转) of the Earth and is also increasing the length of day at an “unprecedented” rate. The pace of change is higher than at any point in the 20th century, they found.
Here’s what’s happening: As the planet heats up, ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are melting, and this water from the polar regions is flowing into the world’s oceans at the equator (赤道), which is changing the Earth’s shape and slowing its speed of rotation. Thus, as the Earth is turning more slowly, the days are getting longer, although only minimally, on the order of a few milliseconds a day. But it’s potentially enough to affect GPS, communications and even space travel.
This isn’t the first study to make such a claim: A 2021 study found that masses of melting ice around the world -a result of rising temperatures from the burning of fossil fuels-caused the location of the North and South Poles to move eastward since the mid-1990s.
Climate scientist Vincent Humphrey of the University of Zurich, who was not involved in the 2021 study nor the new research, previously explained how more water at the equator affects how fast the Earth spins (旋转). He compared it to a “skater spinning on the ice”. “If they hold their arms out, their spinning is slower, but if they bring them into their body, then they speed up.” The same thing happens to the Earth.
Another cause of the Earth’s rotational slowdown is tidal friction, which is caused by the moon, according to a statement from ETH Zurich. However, the new research comes to a surprising conclusion: “If humans continue to produce more greenhouse gases and the Earth warms up accordingly, this would finally have a greater influence on the Earth’s rotational speed than the effect of the moon, which has determined the increase in the length of the day for billions of years.”
12. What does the author imply in Paragraph 2
A. Every coin has two sides. B. Facts speak louder than words.
C. A little leak will sink a great ship. D. Fear is often greater than the danger.
13. Why is Vincent Humphrey mentioned
A. To prove his previous prediction.
B. To tell people how fast the Earth spins.
C. To make the findings more understandable.
D. To show Earth’s rotation is similar to skating.
14. What are people expected to do according to the last paragraph
A. Take measures to reduce greenhouse gases.
B. Adapt themselves to the longer days in the future.
C. Try to decrease the effect of the moon on the Earth.
D. Find out more causes of the Earth’s rotational slowdown.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Ice Sheets Change the Earth’s Shape
B. Global Warming Makes Days Longer
C. Melting Ice Affects the Location of Poles
D. The Moon Speeds up the Earth’s Rotation
