I’ve always had a keen sense of adventure. I worked as a photographer in Liverpool and in the summer of 2016, I embarked on a solo 1,000-mile (1,600 km) route through Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan and I did the majority of it on foot.
Slow travel has allowed me to have amazing encounters with people from all walks of life. Plus, I’m not a natural at striking up conversations with strangers. So when mapping out my next trip, I landed on the idea that being accompanied by a pack animal would make me look appealing enough for people to start a chat.
I found a donkey from a local farm. After seven months of training, we set off on the nearly 700-mile adventure from one lighthouse in Cape Wrath, at the top of the Highlands, to another in Dorset.
However, I realized that walking a donkey around suburban streets does not in any way prepare you for walking across the West Highlands, an extremely challenging landscape: hilly, mostly moorland(荒原), with all kinds of biting insects. For the first six weeks, I felt extremely out of my depth, and constantly questioned whether or not I should be doing the walk and whether Martin was enjoying it.
The walk was one of the hardest things I’ve done, but I don’t like quitting. We walked along trails, canals and roads from Glasgow, Lancaster, Leeds and Liverpool to Gloucester, Bristol and Dorchester. Everywhere we went, we put smiles on people’s faces. They were overjoyed to have encountered Martin. People would fall over themselves to help us — letting us camp on their farms, giving me hot food and coffee, cheering us on. Nobody ever turned me away. Having Martin around as my partner really opened up a lot of chances to meet people. I’ve figured out that people want to be friendly, but sometimes they just need an excuse.
The walk helped to restore my faith in people and taught me that endlessly worrying — like about where we were going to camp each night — doesn’t solve anything. Not only did I walk the entire length of the UK, but I also made a lifelong friend with a 15-year-old donkey called Martin.
4. Why did the author have a donkey to travel with
A. To help him carry luggage. B. To make himself approachable.
C. To use it for transportation. D. To improve his sense of direction.
5. What did the author try to show in paragraph 4
A. The highlights and regrets. B. The preparation for the walk.
C. The difficulties and self-doubts. D. The danger of the West Highlands.
6. The underlined phrase “fall over themselves” in Paragraph 5 probably means ________.
A. feel tired of helping others B. try very hard to do something
C. walk carelessly and fall down D. refuse to offer help politely
7. What is the best title for the passage
A. A Solo Walk Across the UK B. Martin: My Loyal Donkey Partner
C. The Challenges of Walking with a Donkey D. A Walk, a Donkey, and a Restored Faith in People

About 4 billion people already experience water shortage for at least one month a year and this number could double by 2050, according to a 2024 study. Yet progress on water-shortage age targets under the UN Sustainable Development Goals is off track. Professor Guenther, director of the UN University’s Institute, says that water shortage has largely been invisible to policymakers.
Fortunately, many technologies to make better use of water resources are developing. These include technologies to improve the efficiency of typically energy-intensive desalination (海水的脱盐) plants, and the improved biological treatment processes that effectively double the capacity of wastewater treatment plants to increase the water available for industrial and agricultural use.
Investment has not always been available for water resource solutions. The water sector is a $500 billion marketplace, representing a huge opportunity for investors. But investing in this area requires a willingness to wait for returns in the longer term.
Investment in new technologies is not the only answer, says Brooke, co-editor of Unconventional Water Resources, a book published by the UN earlier this year to urge the use of various and plentiful resources that until now have not received much attention. These range from the millions of cubic kilometers of water in deep land-based and seabed aquifers (含水层), and in fog and icebergs, to reusing water from the ballast holds (压载舱) of thousands of ships for agriculture.
“It is a human approach to think that sufficient technology will address the problem. But if there’s no rain, if the groundwater level gets lower and lower, if we cannot dig deeper, and there is no option for desalination, this is when we start thinking,” says Brooke. “But by then it’s very often too late.”
8. What causes the slow progress on water-shortage age solutions according to Guenther
A. Insufficient funds. B. The lack of effective policies.
C. Outdated technology. D. The rise of global warming.
9. What stops investors from investing in the water sector
A. The limited market. B. The long profit cycle.
C. The high investment risk. D. The large initial investment.
10. Which measure did the UN suggest taking earlier this year
A. Promoting water use efficiency. B. Improving wastewater treatment.
C. Building more desalination plants. D. Seeking alternative water resources.
11. What does the last paragraph mainly convey
A To issue a warning. B. To launch an appeal.
C. To make a prediction. D. To highlight an approach.

When we’re tired or injured, we often go to bed earlier to recharge and mend our bodies. That’s because we often think that night is a golden time to deal with stress or injuries. But is it true
Nathaniel Hoyle, a scientist of the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, has been leading a study into this topic. The team discovered that fibroblast cells (成纤维细胞) in the body switch off at night. These cells help close up a wound after the skin is broken and lay a foundation for new skin to grow. Why exactly are these cells less active at night
It’s all to do with your body’s circadian (昼夜节律的) rhythm — a 24-hour internal clock that helps your cells do their jobs on time. New Scientist reported that a group of 30 genes that control the fibroblasts worked only daytime shifts, causing the slower healing process at night. To test its theory, the Cambridge-based team examined data from the International Burn Injury Database, which records details of burn victims around the world. This analysis revealed that nighttime burns, on average, took 11 more days to heal than burns during the day.
A similar result occurred while experimenting using live mice. Those that were cut during night-time hours recovered more slowly than those during the day. “You can see by eyes, when the cell is wounded only 8 hours apart from each other, in different circadian periods, the daytime wounded ones take off, and the nighttime ones drag,” research team member John O’Neill told Science Alert. He added, “The time-varying response may be an evolutionary adaptation. As people are more likely to sustain injuries when awake than when sleeping, perhaps our bodies are prepared to respond more quickly in the daytime.” He went on to say that it could be beneficial to schedule surgeries in time with people’s circadian rhythms, earlier for early birds and later for night owls, in order to lessen recovery time. However, in any case, it might be best not to use anything sharp once the sun goes down.
12. Why does the author mention people going to bed earlier when tired or injured
A. To list common methods of recharging the body
B. To explain why people suffer from injuries easily
C. To prove sleep is the only method to deal with stress
D. To arouse readers’ interest in the truth of night healing
13. What do the researchers find during their research
A. Burns take the same time to heal regardless of their cut time.
B. Fibroblast cells boost the healing by working nighttime shift.
C. Mice respond differently in the healing process from humans.
D. A body’s circadian rhythm matters in waking up fibroblast cells.
14. How might scheduling surgeries according to circadian rhythms help patients
A. It can reduce the risk of surgery failure.
B. It can reduce the pain felt during surgery.
C. It can shorten the recovery time after surgery.
D. It can help patients wake up faster after surgery.
15. What can be a suitable title for this passage
A. Why We Heal Injuries Better in the Daytime
B. A Research Offers Clues to Treating Injuries
C. How We Heal Wounds and Injuries Effectively
D. Scientists Unlock the Secret to Avoiding Injuries
第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
People set goals for their lives. Perhaps you want to lose weight, learn a new skill or read 30 books a year. But then you get busy and your daily life takes up all of your time. Before you know it, weeks, then months have gone by and you are no closer to your goal. ____16____
1. Make a specific plan
Adding details to your plan helps you act better. Be sure to add when and where. If your goal is to work out five days each week, a plan like “I’ll work out on weekdays” would be too vague. But a detailed plan like “I’ll exercise at the gym on weekdays during my lunch break” would fit the bill. ____17____ For example, if you plan to work out during lunch, you’ll be sure to refuse a lunch invitation from others.
2. Consider punishment
This may sound difficult, but ensuring you’ll face some punishment if you don’t achieve your goal can work wonders. One easy way to do this is to tell a few people about your goal. You’ll feel ashamed if they check back later and find out you haven’t followed through. Feeling ashamed is a kind of spiritual punishment. You can also make a bet with a friend that you’ll stick to your goal. ____18____
3. Make it fun
Most of us concentrate on the final result when it comes to achieving our goals. ____19____ Are you enjoying the process of pursuing you goal If it’s not fun to exercise or study, you’re unlikely to keep at it. But if you get pleasure from your works or study sessions, you’ll persist longer. It’s the pursuit of your goals-not the reaching of them-that makes up the weeks, days and hours of our lives. So make sure to have fun along the way!
4. Get a little help from your friends
Spending time around high achievers can boost your own performance. If your aim is to run a marathon or write a book, you’d be wise to start hanging around friends who’ve made it to the finish line and can show you how it’s done. You’ll learn a lot just by spending time together with these friends. ____20____ Giving someone else tips on how to achieve boosts your self-confidence and motivates you to achieve success.
A. There is evidence that cash punishment motivates success.
B. It can also help you avoid interruptions.
C. Coaching friends with shared goals can improve your success rate, too.
D. Who could you turn to for help
E. If you want to stick to it, try the following strategies.
F. But focusing too much on it can make us ignore an even more important thing.
G. Friends are well aware of your strengths and weaknesses.

Wen Xiaoyan had a super cool journey at the Paris Paralympics (残奥会). She got gold medals in four games and made new records for the Paralympics.
On the first day of the games, it was raining. But Wen still won the race for girls who are 200 meters T37. She was almost as good as her own best record. The wet track didn’t stop her from being brave. Later, on the morning of the race for girls who are 100 meters T37, it rained again. Wen didn’t give up. She won and made another record. The people who watched cheered very loudly. They were still very excited even though it was raining.
Wen liked the purple track at the stadium. She said it was a very pretty color and it made her feel not worried. The color was soft but also strong. It seemed to help her a little more. Wen has the best records in some games. In Paris, she was really great. She showed how good she is and how she doesn’t give up easily. In the long jump, although her last jump wasn’t good enough, it was better than her best record.
She also helped the Chinese team get the gold medal in the relay race. This was a very good thing. For Wen, the Paralympics are not just about getting gold medals. They are about finding out how good she is and showing how China is getting better at Paralympic sports. She is someone we admire.
At the Paralympics, Wen made a good friend named Jaleen Roberts. They are people who play against each other and are competitors, but they are also friends. They met in London in 2017. In Tokyo, Wen told Roberts to be brave. Now, when they see each other, they give each other big hugs. Their friendship is a very nice example of being good sportspeople from different countries.
