Unit 1 A new start
(1) My first day at junior high
My first day at junior high school is a memory I’ll always cherish. Walking into the campus with excitement and a little nervousness, I met my new classmates and teachers.
My head teacher, Ms. Lee, is warm and approachable. She showed us around the school, including the bright classrooms, spacious playground and modern library. In the first English class, we introduced ourselves one by one. I made friends with Lily, who sits next to me—she shares my love for reading. We also played a word game that made the class full of laughter.
By the end of the day, my nervousness was gone. I realized junior high is a new adventure, and I’m ready to embrace the challenges and joys ahead.
(2) A letter to my old friend
Dear Tom,
How have you been since we graduated from primary school I miss our time playing together so much! I’m writing to tell you about my new junior high life.
Junior high is quite different from primary school. We have more subjects like History and Geography, which are both interesting and challenging. The classes are more interactive—teachers often ask us to discuss in groups. At first, I worried about fitting in, but my classmates are all friendly. I joined the music club, and we practice singing every Wednesday afternoon.
I know you’re in a different school now. Could you tell me about your new life I hope we can meet up during the weekend. Looking forward to your reply!
Yours sincerely,
Jack
Unit 2 More than fun
My hobby: Painting
Everyone has a hobby that brings them joy, and mine is painting. Since I was a little kid, I’ve been fascinated by colors and shapes.
Painting helps me relax after a long day of studying. Whenever I hold a brush, all my worries disappear. I love painting landscapes the most—capturing the golden sunset over the mountains or the green fields in spring makes me feel close to nature. I also like drawing portraits of my family and friends; it’s a special way to record our moments together. Last month, my painting of a city park won the first prize in the school art competition. That encouraged me a lot!
Painting not only enriches my life but also teaches me to observe the beauty around me. I’ll keep this hobby forever and hope to become an artist someday.
Unit 3 Family ties
(1) The person I admire most
The person I admire most is my mother. She is an ordinary office worker, but she has a heart full of love and courage.
My mother works hard every day to support our family, yet she always finds time to care for me. When I’m sick, she stays up late to look after me; when I face difficulties in study, she patiently helps me solve problems. What impresses me most is her positive attitude towards life. Last year, she lost her job, but she didn’t give up. She learned new skills online and soon found a better job. She often tells me, “No matter how hard life is, we should keep smiling.”
My mother sets a good example for me. I admire her perseverance and kindness. I will learn from her and become a responsible and optimistic person.
(2) A meaningful family dinner
Last Spring Festival, my family had a meaningful dinner that I’ll never forget. It was the first time all my relatives from different cities gathered together.
Before the dinner, my parents and I went to the supermarket to buy ingredients. My grandparents taught us how to make dumplings—they showed us how to wrap the filling perfectly. During the dinner, the table was filled with delicious food: braised pork, fish, and dumplings of different flavors. Everyone shared their stories of the past year—my uncle talked about his business trip to abroad, my cousin shared her school life. We laughed and chatted happily. My grandfather said, “Family reunion is the most precious thing in the world.”
That dinner didn’t just fill our stomachs; it strengthened the bond between family members. I realize that family is the warmest harbor in life.
Unit 4 Time to celebrate
(1) The Spring Festival
The Spring Festival is the most important traditional festival in China. It’s a time for family reunion and joy, usually falling in January or February.
Before the festival, every family cleans their house thoroughly to sweep away bad luck. We also paste Spring Festival couplets on the doors and hang red lanterns, which symbolize good fortune. On New Year’s Eve, the whole family has a big dinner. We eat dumplings, fish, and other special foods—fish means “surplus” in Chinese, hoping for a better life in the new year. In the evening, we watch the Spring Festival Gala and set off fireworks. Children are especially happy because they can get lucky money from their elders.
The Spring Festival carries Chinese people’s wishes for family and happiness. It’s a tradition we should cherish and pass down.
(2) My favorite festival
My favorite festival is the Dragon Boat Festival, which is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. It’s a festival with a long history, in memory of the great poet Qu Yuan.
On this day, there are many interesting activities. The most famous one is dragon boat racing. Teams row colorful dragon boats to the sound of drums, and the scene is exciting. My family and I often go to watch the races by the river. We also eat zongzi—glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves, with fillings like red beans or meat. My grandmother makes the best zongzi; every year, she teaches me how to wrap them, even though I’m not very good at it.
The Dragon Boat Festival is not only fun but also teaches us about Chinese culture. I love this festival because it brings me joy and helps me learn more about our traditions.
Unit 5 Fantastic friends
My favorite animal: Dogs
Animals are our best friends, and my favorite animal is dogs. They are loyal, friendly, and always bring happiness to people.
Dogs come in different breeds and sizes—from small Chihuahuas to large Golden Retrievers. My family has a Golden Retriever named Lucky. He has golden fur and big, bright eyes. Lucky is very smart; he can understand many commands, like “sit” and “fetch”. Every day after school, he waits for me at the door. When I’m sad, he licks my hand to comfort me; when I’m happy, he runs around me excitedly. He is not just a pet but a member of my family.
Dogs are faithful companions. However, some dogs are abandoned and live a hard life. We should treat dogs kindly—don’t hurt them and help stray dogs if we can. Let’s live in harmony with dogs!

Unit 1 The secrets of happiness
My happy moment
Happiness is not far away; it’s in the little moments of life. The happiest moment I’ve ever had was when I helped an old man cross the street.
It was a rainy Saturday afternoon. I was on my way to the library when I saw an old man standing at the crosswalk. He looked worried, holding an umbrella tightly. The road was wet and slippery, and there were many cars passing by. I walked up to him and said, “Grandpa, do you need help crossing the street ” He nodded with a smile. I held his arm gently and carefully led him across the road. When we got to the other side, he thanked me repeatedly and said, “You’re such a kind girl.”
At that moment, I felt a warm feeling in my heart. I realized that helping others can bring so much happiness. Happiness is not about getting something; it’s about giving and caring for others.
Unit 2 Go for it
My sports story
Sports play an important role in my life, and my favorite sport is swimming. It’s not just a way to exercise but also a journey of overcoming challenges.
I started learning to swim when I was 10 years old. At first, I was afraid of the water—I couldn’t even put my head under the water. My coach encouraged me patiently, teaching me breathing skills and swimming strokes. I practiced every weekend, and gradually, I became more confident. One day, during a swimming competition, I felt nervous at first. But when I jumped into the water, I remembered all the skills I had learned. I swam as fast as I could, and finally, I won the third prize.
Swimming has taught me perseverance and courage. It tells me that as long as I keep trying, I can overcome any difficulty. I will keep swimming and enjoy the fun it brings.
Unit 3 Food matters
(1) My favorite food
My favorite food is noodles, especially the tomato and egg noodles my mother makes. It’s a simple dish, but it’s full of love and flavor.
Every time my mother makes tomato and egg noodles, the whole house is filled with a delicious smell. First, she fries the eggs until they are golden yellow, then cuts the tomatoes into pieces and cooks them with some water to make the soup. Finally, she puts the noodles into the soup and boils them for a few minutes. When the noodles are ready, she adds some green onions. The noodles are soft and chewy, the soup is sweet and sour, and the eggs are tender. Every time I eat it, I feel warm and satisfied.
This dish reminds me of my mother’s love. Whenever I’m tired or sad, a bowl of tomato and egg noodles makes me feel better. It’s not just food; it’s a symbol of family love.
(2) How to keep a healthy diet
Health is the most precious thing in life, and a healthy diet is key to keeping fit. Here are some tips on how to have a healthy diet.
First, we should eat a variety of foods. Vegetables and fruits are rich in vitamins, so we should eat more of them—like spinach, carrots, apples, and oranges. We also need to eat some whole grains, such as rice and oats, which provide us with energy. Second, we should have three meals a day regularly. Skipping breakfast is bad for our stomachs, so we must eat breakfast every morning. Third, we should avoid junk food, like chips, candy, and fast food. They are high in fat and sugar, which are harmful to our health. Finally, we should drink plenty of water every day—water helps our body work properly.
A healthy diet can make us stronger and more energetic. Let’s develop good eating habits and enjoy a healthy life.
Unit 4 The art of having fun
My weekend plan
Weekends are a time to relax and have fun, but it’s also important to arrange time wisely. Here is my weekend plan.
On Saturday morning, I will finish my homework first. After that, I will go to the bookstore with my friends to buy some new books. I love reading, and the bookstore is my favorite place. In the afternoon, I will take a painting class—I want to improve my painting skills. In the evening, I will watch a movie with my family at home.
On Sunday morning, I will go for a walk in the park with my dog. Breathing fresh air and enjoying the beautiful scenery makes me feel relaxed. In the afternoon, I will clean my room and help my mother do some housework. Before going to bed, I will prepare my schoolbag for the new week.
This plan helps me balance study and relaxation. I believe I will have a meaningful and happy weekend.
Unit 5 Amazing nature
(1) A trip to the mountain
Last summer holiday, I went on a trip to Huangshan Mountain with my parents. It was an unforgettable experience that made me appreciate the beauty of nature.
We took a train to Huangshan and arrived early in the morning. As we climbed the mountain, we saw tall pine trees standing on the cliffs, strange rocks in different shapes, and beautiful waterfalls. The air was fresh and cool, and the scenery was breathtaking. When we got to the top of the mountain, we were amazed by the sea of clouds—it felt like we were in a fairyland. We took many photos to record this wonderful moment. At night, we stayed in a hotel on the mountain and enjoyed the quiet night.
This trip not only let me see the magnificent scenery of Huangshan but also made me realize how beautiful nature is. We should protect nature and cherish these precious natural landscapes.
(2) Protecting our environment
Nature provides us with everything we need—clean air, fresh water, and beautiful scenery. But nowadays, our environment is facing many problems, such as air pollution, water pollution, and deforestation. It’s our duty to protect the environment.
As teenagers, we can do many small things to help. First, we should save energy—turn off the lights and taps when we don’t use them. Second, we should reduce waste—use reusable bags instead of plastic bags, and recycle paper and bottles. Third, we should plant more trees—trees can absorb carbon dioxide and make the air cleaner. Fourth, we should not litter—throw rubbish into the right bins. We can also call on our family and friends to join us in protecting the environment.
Protecting the environment is not a task for one person, but for everyone. If we all take action, our earth will become more beautiful and sustainable. Let’s work together to protect our home!
Unit 6 Hitting the road
(1) My favorite travel destination
My favorite travel destination is Sanya, a beautiful city in Hainan Province. It’s a place with blue sky, white beaches, and clear sea water.
I went to Sanya with my family last winter. The weather there was warm and sunny, which was a big contrast to the cold weather in my hometown. We stayed in a hotel near the beach. Every morning, I woke up early to watch the sunrise—the sun rose from the sea, painting the sky orange and pink. During the day, we went swimming in the sea, built sandcastles on the beach, and played beach volleyball. In the evening, we ate fresh seafood at the seaside restaurants, like crabs and shrimps. We also visited some scenic spots, such as Tianya Haijiao and Yalong Bay.
Sanya is like a paradise on earth. I love its beautiful scenery and warm weather. I hope to visit Sanya again someday and explore more of its beauty.
(2) A school trip to the zoo
Last month, our school organized a trip to the city zoo. It was a fun and educational day that I enjoyed a lot.
We took the school bus to the zoo in the morning. As soon as we arrived, we were excited to see many animals. We first visited the panda house—there were two cute pandas eating bamboo slowly. Then we went to the monkey mountain—monkeys were jumping around and playing with each other. We also saw tigers, lions, elephants, and many other animals. Our teacher told us interesting facts about each animal—for example, elephants have a long trunk to drink water and pick food. In the afternoon, we watched a animal show—dolphins jumped out of the water and performed wonderful tricks.
This trip not only made us happy but also taught us a lot about animals. It made me realize that animals are our friends, and we should protect them. I hope we can have more such school trips in the future.
