Back in the day when I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life I was studying to become a firefighter.
As a firefighter, you’re constantly thinking of other people and trying to help children. It’s the mindset, that is the
most difficult part in this job!
One night I was heading home and decided to stop off at a burrito (玉米饼) place. I was approached by a
homeless man. He was very dirty and obviously hungry. He asked me for some change to buy a little food. As I
was pulling some change out, I had an idea.
I decided to see if he wanted to eat a real dinner, so I asked him to follow me back into the burrito joint to
order. When he followed me in, the people behind the count er refused to let him in. After some arguing, so I had to
encourage him to order whatever and however much he wanted. He ended up ordering enough to fill his stomach at
least 3 times over!
For someone who has been on the edges of society it seemed like he was very surprised at my kind behavior.
第 4页/共 17页
But to me, it was what any “human being” should do or at least offer. I know we see these people every day asking
for money but you had to be there to see the look in his face. To me it reminded me when I was young and my mom
brought out a big birthday cake for me on my birthday, with all the candy, getting to experience a big meal. And I
think he felt special, like he was getting attention. Again something that I could see he hadn’t experienced in a long
time.
I often think about this story, because to me it’s not just about helping someone out by feeding them, but
giving him the respect of being a human being and allowing him to feel good about himself was very rewarding.
4. What’s the hardest part of being a firefighter according to the author
A. Learning to be a good firefighter.
B. Deciding what to do in the future.
C. Dealing with the brother’s relationship.
D. Developing the mindset of helping others.
5. What do we know about the homeless man
A. He was grateful for the author’s kindness.
B. He ordered whatever he wanted the moment he was in.
C. He asked the author to buy a burrito to fill his stomach.
D. He was not welcomed by those running the burrito joint at first.
6. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning the birthday cake
A. To think back to his own birthday at a young age.
B. To explain the reason for the values he holds onto.
C. To show the similar experience of the homeless man.
D. To tell the difference between him and the homeless man.
7. Which of the following words can best describe the writer
A. Caring and humorous.
B. Selfless and determined.
C. Kind-hearted and thoughtful.
D. Considerate and Hard-working.

As one of the most widely used languages in the world, Chinese, spoken by about 1.4 billion people, has
become much more important around the globe in recent decades. Yet, few people fully understand the difficulties
第 5页/共 17页
that non-native learners will face when trying to master this language.
Unlike many alphabetic languages, Chinese has a unique writing system. It uses characters instead of letters,
and each character carries its own meaning and pronunciation. This makes its vocabulary rich but also brings
challenges. For example, characters like “辩 (argue)” and “辨 (distinguish)” share the same part “辛” and look
almost identical at first sight, differing only in middle parts (‘讠’ and ‘忄’). Telling them apart correctly is even
hard for learners who have studied Chinese for years.
Chinese’s tonal system is another big and well-known challenge for learners. It has four basic tones, and even
a tiny change can completely change a word’s meaning. Take “shi” for example: when read with the first tone (shi),
it means “poetry”; with the second tone (shi), it stands for “stone”; with the third tone (shi), it refers to “to cause”;
with the fourth tone (shi), it can mean “matter” or “event”. If a tone is mispronounced, it will lead to
misunderstandings in daily interactions, so learners need lots of repeated listening and speaking practice to get them
right.
Mastering Chinese isn’t just about memorizing characters and tones, it also needs a good understanding of
Chinese culture behind the language. The traditional greeting “Ni chi le ma (Have you eaten )”, which isn’t a
literal question about whether someone has had a meal. Instead, it’s a warm way to show care for others. Learners
who fail to recognize this cultural meaning may either respond literally (e.g., “Yes, I had noodles.”) or misinterpret
it as an invitation to eat, resulting in awkward communication gaps that hinder genuine social connection.
In short, learning Chinese well comes with many difficulties, as Chinese is more than just a tool for
communication, it’s a key to understanding the rich culture of China.
8. Why are characters “辩” and “辨” tough for learners
A. They have no fixed meanings. B. They look similar to each other.
C. Their pronunciation is easy to mix up. D. Their spelling is too complex to memorize.
9. What might happen when a tone is mispronounced
A. A new tone may come out. B. The listener may get surprised.
C. The speaker may feel awkward. D. Improper messages may be delivered.
10. What does the underlined word “hinder” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Block. B. ignore. C. Deepen. D. Develop.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Ways to Master Chinese Characters
B. Cultural Context in Chinese Greetings

Global warming is greatly affecting sea turtle babies — 99% of them are being born female. Sea turtle
populations have been facing an obvious population drop, which are further worsened by climate change.
Floridian sea turtles for the past four years have been facing the hottest summers in Florida state history. Bette
Zirkelback, a manager of the Turtle Hospital within the Florida Keys, noted that, “Scientists, who are studying sea
turtle hatching (孵化), have found no male sea turtles and only female sea turtles for the past four years.”
This surprising trend shows how climate change is affecting the species and how animals struggle to adapt to
these unnatural monly, sex is determined before birth, but in sea turtles, something unique happens.
When female sea turtles bury their eggs in the sand, the sex is decided by the temperature of the sand on the
beaches. These turtle eggs will hatch for around two months, and their sex is decided by a temperature difference of
around 4 degrees. Sea turtles that hatch below 27.7℃will be born male. If sea turtles hatch above 31℃, they will
be born female.
Melissa Rosales Rodriguez, a sea turtle keeper at the Miami Zoo Turtle Hospital, expressed her concerns
saying, “In the years to come, we’re going to see an obvious drop in their population because we just don’t have the
genetic diversity (基因多样性). We don’t have the male-to-female rate needed in order to be able to have enough
sea turtle babies.”
Therefore, in sea turtle hatching grounds around the world, there is a huge need for sea turtle protection
centers to ensure the future of sea turtles.
12. What is the major threat to sea turtles
A. Habitat loss. B. Human activities.
C. Climate change. D. Water pollution.
13. What can be inferred about sea turtles from Paragraph 3
A. They have a fixed male-to-female rate.
B. They require high temperatures to hatch.
C. Their eggs are laid on the beach surface.
D. Their sex is affected by sand temperature.
14. What does the author suggest for sea turtles
A. Establishing preservation sites globally.
第 7页/共 17页
B. Improving the success rate of hatching.
C. Fixing the sand temperature to a fit level.
D. Protecting the eggs from their enemies.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Ways to Ensure the Future of Sea Turtles
B. The Drop of Female Sea Turtle Populations
C. Why 99% of Sea Turtles Are Born Female
D. How Climate Change Is Killing Sea Turtles

It was a normal Monday morning. My class teacher, Mrs Tan, was going through our exam questions. I wrote
down some notes and corrected my mistakes.
“Beep — beep — beep!” A sharp sound cut through the air like a knife. I covered my ears, feeling annoyed.
Then I knew: it was the fire alarm. I tried to tell others to stay calm, but no one listened. My classmates were
screaming and running around like crazy.
“Calm down, everyone! Please queue (排队) up in an orderly manner! We have practised this in the fire safety
practice!” instructed Mrs Tan, sounding anxious.
No one paid attention to her. They kept screaming loudly. One student even started crying from fear. I walked
around the classroom, asking my classmates to settle down while we were waiting for more instructions.
Soon, a serious voice came from the speakers in every class: “All students must follow your teachers and leave
第 11页/共 17页
the building in a calm and organized way. The fire may start from a gas blast (爆炸) in the dining hall — don’t go
near there!”
At last, Mrs Tan managed to calm the frightened students down. In a strict voice, she told us to take the safe
path to Gate 6. She quickly put us in neat lines and led us out of the classroom. As soon as I took the first step out
of the classroom, I took a deep breath. The air was foggy because thick smoke came from the dining hall. I felt like
I was choking, so I covered my nose without thinking. Worse still, the ash from the smoke hurt my eyes. Coughing
(咳嗽) anxiously, I tried to see Mrs Tan in front, but the air was too foggy to see anything clearly. In less than a
minute, I lost sight of my class and was left alone.

I felt really worried all of a sudden. The thick smoke kept pouring in, making it harder to breathe. I stumbled
forward along the wall, trying to remember the way to Gate 6. My hands trembled as I touched the cold wall, and
every cough made my chest ache. I called out “Mrs Tan” softly, but my voice was drowned out by the distant noise
of sirens. I dared not stop, fearing that I would be trapped in the smoke forever. Tears mixed with ash ran down my
cheeks, but I wiped them away quickly — panicking wouldn’t help.
Just then, I saw Mrs Tan — she was waving a flashlight (手电筒) through the smoke. My heart leaped with
joy. I shouted her name loudly and ran towards the light. Mrs Tan’s face was covered in ash, but her eyes were full
of relief when she saw me. “I’ve been looking for you!” she said, taking my hand tightly. She pulled me close and
covered my nose with a wet cloth she had prepared. We hurried to Gate 6 together, and soon I saw my classmates
waiting anxiously. When I joined them, everyone let out a sigh of relief.
