Dear friends,
I am honoured to deliver a closing speech on behalf of all the Chinese students in the
International Middle School Students Survival Training Camp.
Before I came to Canada, I had made careful preparations for this camp. However, I still
experienced some unexpected challenges, such as the difficulty in making myself understood,
talking with others from several countries, and dealing with culture shock. With great patience
and kindness, the organizers helped me out. The four weeks in the camp has changed me
greatly. Not only did I improve my oral English, but I also made lifelong friendships. Most
importantly, I became more confident.
So now I would like to express my great thanks to all the people who contributed to the
camp. May our friendship last forever. Thank you!

Melati and Isabel decided to make a positive impact straight away. They spent their spare
time picking up the rubbish on the beach. However, soon they realised that they couldn’t solve the
problem on their own, for there was so much plastic. After discussions and preparations, they
started an organisation to spread their idea among the youth, involving more young people in the
movement, which proved to be a hit. More and more teenagers took part. In a month, they
collected and recycled 2.5 tons of plastic altogether, restoring the beautiful beach.
One month later, Melati received a call from the local newspaper. The two girls were invited
to an interview in which they were asked what inspired them to start the organisation, what the
biggest challenge was and what advice they had for young people who wanted to change the
world. They said a team was what kept them going on, and added, “Keeping our team engaged
and motivated has been a challenge and we are happy to have a positive influence.” Melati and
Isabel are heroes who make a big difference to our world.

W:OK.Do you think Ethan can understand it?He's only six years old.

M: Indeed, so you'll want it warm and water proof. This is my favourite one at the
moment.
W:That is lovely.
M:Try it on.
W: Have you got any other colour besides black
M:Yes,you can get it in gray, red, and yellow.A nice blue might suit you actually, and
it matches your eyes.
W:I need something bright as we often go climbing.
M:In that case,I'd go with the yellow. How is that on W: It's a little tight.
M: Well, that's the small one, so we'd probably go for a medium.
W:Well,I'm usually a large but a medium should be OK.
M:So this one is currently $200,but we're actually giving customers a 10% discount this
weekend.
W: Amazing!I'm glad I came in today then.

Different countries have different waste management systems. One thing for sure:it's never too hard to throw your garbage in Indonesia. What Indonesians commonly do is put their garbage in their personal garbage areas which are usually located in the front of their houses, right at the side of the street. In Germany, different kinds of garbage are put in different coloured cans. For example, blue garbage cans are for paper and cardboard, and pizza boxes go to gray
garbage cans.Green and white garbage cans are for glass. Yellow garbage cans are for plastic
and metals. In Korea, you are expected to sort your waste and put it into the right bags. Each district in Korea has its own official garbage bags. The garbage bags could be bought at the local supermarket.Proper waste management isn't a hard thing to do,but it needs to be supported by your family members and your surroundings in order to gain benefits from it.辽宁省重点高中沈阳市郊联体

Herbert George Wells was born in England in 1866.He did not come from a rich family.
His parents had a small shop but it was not successful and closed when he was thirteen. He
worked at different times in a clothes shop and a chemist’s. He always read a lot and later
managed to get a place at a science college. After he left there he became a teacher, but he was
badly hurt while playing football and this meant that he could not continue. He then worked in
London, writing for newspapers and doing some teaching of small groups. None of this made
him much money.
The Time Machine was his first fictional work. It appeared in weekly parts in a magazine in
1894 and as a book the following year. At the time, Wells was married to his second wife and
was trying to support both her and her mother. He needed to make money, so he wrote it quite
quickly. Although he was never really happy with the finished book, it was a great success and
allowed him to continue as a writer.
It is not easy for us to understand how different this book was from others of the time. It is
the first real science fiction book. It introduces the readers to the idea of time as the fourth
dimension, with the three dimensions of space ten years before Einstein made it part of scientific
thinking. Wells also describes a simple mechanical answer to the problem of time travel—a time
machine. Nobody had ever described time travel in a machine before, and the words “time
machine” entered the English language.
After the great success of this book, Wells wrote more science fiction. His most famous
books are The Island of Dr Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), The War of the Worlds (1898)
and The First Men in the Moon (1901). All of them have been filmed, some more than once.
H.G.Wells died in London in 1946.
24.Why did Wells begin to write for newspapers in London
A.He wanted to make more money. B.His second wife asked him to do so.
C.He was seriously injured in sport. D.He was never happy with his former job.
25.What do we know about The Time Machine
A.It was Wells’ most famous work.
B.It first appeared as a book.
C.Wells was very satisfied with it.
D.Its success helped to support Wells’ family.
26.How was The Time Machine different from other books of the time
A.It was the first fiction book in the world.
B.It first described time travel in a machine.
C.Readers felt it easier to read and understand.
D.It introduced the idea of four-dimensional space.
27.What is the purpose of the passage
A.To describe the plot of The Time Machine.
B.To convince readers that Wells was a good writer.
C.To illustrate the great and famous works of Wells.
D.To introduce Wells’ life experiences and his works.

Beth Shapiro will lead the scientific efforts to resurrect (使 复 活 ) the dodo at Colossal
Biosciences, founded by tech entrepreneur Ben Lamm. Scientists hope to recover the dodo if
they gather enough DNA to create a clone to implant in the eggs of closely related modern
pigeons.
Dodo, an odd-looking flightless bird, lived on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean
until the late 17th century. The arrival of sailors brought with them invasive species like rats and
practices like hunting. They doomed the dodo, which showed no fear of humans, to extinction in
the space of just a few decades.
Now, a team of scientists wants to bring back the dodo. Shapiro said that she had already
completed a key first step in the project based on genetic material taken out from dodo remains
in Denmark. The next step was to compare the genetic information with the dodo’s closest bird
relatives in the pigeon family.
The following work that’s needed to resurrect the animal—programming cells from a living
relative of the dodo with the lost bird’s DNA—will be significantly more difficult. Shapiro said
she hopes to adapt an existing technique that has already been used to create a chicken fathered
by a duck.
However, Shapiro said that perfecting these synthetic (合 成 的 ) biology tools will have
wider implications for bird conservation. The techniques could allow scientists to move specific
genetic traits between bird species to help protect them as habitats shrink and the climate warms.
Shapiro thought the technology which works in chickens would be amazing to get this to work
in lots of different birds across the bird tree of life because that will be hugely impactful for bird
conservation.
Whether or not Colossal and its team of scientists are eventually successful in their quest to
bring back the dodo and the technological breakthroughs they may generate, they have investors
excited. Colossal also announced that it has raised an additional $150 million, bringing the total
amount of funding raised since the company launched in 2021 to $225 million. 28.What does the underlined word “doomed” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Destroyed. B.Rescued. C.Hunted. D.Fed.
29.Which is the most challenging in resurrecting the dodo
A.Taking out genetic material from dodo remains.
B.Comparing genetic information with the dodo’s relatives.
C.Programming its living relative’s cells with the dodo’s DNA.
D.Adapting an existing technique to create a chicken.
30.What can we learn from the passage
A.Scientists can change a duck into a chicken.
B.Synthetic biology tools will shrink bird habitats.
C.Protection of birds will benefit from the technology.
D.The project will bring back the dodo soon.
31.Why are the numbers mentioned in the last paragraph
A.To show the project is promising.
B.To evidence the technology is predictable.
C.To imply the funding is insufficient.
D.To prove the breakthrough is admirable.

As humanity sets their sights on deep space exploration, the moon becomes a stepping
stone, with countries hoping to build lunar bases to support such missions. To solve the “lunch”
problem, scientists have been exploring the possibility of growing plants on the moon. A new
study by Chinese scientists has found that bacteria in soil from Earth could offer a solution.
Researchers from China Agricultural University tested five species of bacteria on a material
that simulated (模拟) lunar soil. Within a period of 10 to 21 days, three of the bacteria species
had doubled their amount of phosphorus (磷) content, a key element for plant growth.
They then grew model plants in the lunar soil containing these three bacteria species. They
observed that the plants had longer stems and roots after six days of growth compared with those
grown without the bacteria. The plants also had heavier and wider leaves after 24 days of
growth. Besides, levels of chlorophyll (叶 绿 素 ) —responsible for harvesting energy from
light—in the model plants were about double that of those grown without bacteria.
“The study results have important implications for future longterm stays on the moon, ” the
study’s lead researcher, Sun Zhencai, told Xinhua. Earth bacteria may help astronauts make
better use of lunar resources, such as creating lunar greenhouses. In their follow-up research,
they hope to experiment with real lunar soil samples and grow crops like rice, corn and potatoes.
Since the duration of space missions is increasing, carrying all food supplies to space
becomes unsustainable. Hence, “space farmers” becomes critical.
During the Shenzhou XI mission, astronauts managed to grow lettuce, from sowing to
harvest. In the later missions, the “space farmers” have successfully grown wheat, rice and thale
cress (拟南芥), according to CCTV News.
The most recent visitors to China’s space station, the Shenzhou XVII astronauts, are now
growing lettuce, scallion and cherry tomato. These “space farmers” not only provide astronauts
with food but also more oxygen and water.
32.What do scientists hope the bacteria in soil from Earth can do
A.Change lunar soil into Earth soil. B.Remove pollutants in lunar soil.
C.Help cultivate crops on the moon. D.Get nutrients from the lunar soil.
33.The scientists divided the plants used in the experiment into groups based on ________.
A.plant species B.bacteria species
C.the growth rate of the plants D.the presence of the bacteria
34.What is the main focus of the last two paragraphs on China’s “space farming”?
A.Future missions. B.Recent achievements.
C.Planting methods. D.Production processes.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Bacteria from Earth May Help Grow Crops on the Moon

Why gratitude is significant
As far as I’m concerned, no matter what you’re going through, there is always a reason to
be thankful. Being thankful might just be exactly what you need to do if you’re going through a
tough time. 36
Researchers found that having an attitude of gratitude helps strengthen one’s immune system,
lower blood pressure, improve sleep and motivate people to exercise regularly. 37 Practicing
gratitude also has been associated with better quality of life for individuals who struggle with
stress, anxiety and depression.
Having gone through a period of depression myself after cancer surgery 10 years ago, I can
tell you this illness can be severe. 38 I knew I was in trouble when I couldn’t eat or sleep.
It took me well over a year to come out of that dark valley.
During that time, I sought many forms of treatment for depression, including professional
counseling and exercises. One thing recommended to me by a counselor was keeping a gratitude
journal. 39 This simple exercise lifts my sight out of the darkness and helps me see the
truth around: there are people who love and care for me and there are purposes in life.
40 In reality, there is no single cure for it. If suffering, you may prefer to seek
professional counseling and care. Still, I would encourage you to practice gratitude. Think of a
few things you can thank life for. You might be surprised by how significant an effect it can
have.
A.It itself carries a host of health benefits.
B.Being grateful accounts for your recovery.
C.Gratitude is good for your mind, body and soul.
D.Depression makes you feel as if you were dead inside.
E.For example, I would sincerely convey my gratitude loudly.
F.Every day, I would set down three things I was thankful for in life.
G.Now I realize depression does not go away by practicing a single exercise.
