Emperor penguins were listed as an endangered species(物种) in 2022, because the Antarctic sea ice that they live on is melting(融化). Scientists now use technology to track(追踪) their movements and try to protect them.
Scientists track emperor penguin groups by looking at pictures taken by satellites above the Earth. Their poo stains(粪便痕迹) are left on the ice and can be seen in the pictures from space. When scientists first started using satellites, they only found 28 groups. Now, they have found 66.
Even using satellites, it is difficult to count how many penguins live in different groups. Luckily, scientists can improve this situation by studying the area's weather. Measuring(测量) wind speed and temperature can help predict if the penguins stay together or scatter across the ice — moving apart. If scientists know what the weather was like when the pictures were taken, they can better guess how many penguins are left.
Scientists can also monitor penguins' movements by giving them special electronic tags(标签). Information on the tags can be read by a machine that is carried by a robot called ECHO. The robot travels around penguin groups, reading the tags of different penguins to collect data. It also uses AI to recognize the penguins, and it can move very slowly so that it doesn't make them stressed.
