Local people of the tiny Thai island, which attracted global attention last week after being listed as No.1 on World Beach Guide’s “Top 100 beaches on Earth 2023”, are redoubling efforts to protect its ecosystem. Hat Chao Mai National Park chief Prit Narasrit said.
Koh Kradam will remain closed to tourists four months a year (from Jun. 1 to Sept. 30) to ensure the beach does not experience the same result as the Phi Phi Island, Mr Prit said. Phi Phi was damaged after the movie The Beach was released in 2000. The movie caused a rise in tourism to the area, which was not prepared for the flow of visitors. This led to overcrowding and environmental damage, and many of the beaches were destroyed.
Local people, business owners and park officials will continue to make protecting the island’s ecosystem (生态系统), including its coral reefs and marine (海洋的) life, their first target, Mr Prit added.
The 2.5-square-kilometre island is famous for its white-sand beaches, while its shallow, glassy waters invite easy trips into coral reefs full of marine life. One side of the island is well-known for its breathtaking sunrises, while the other is even more famous for its wonderful sunsets.
Tourists are welcome, Mr Prit said, but they should take care not to litter or harm the marine life, and do their part to protect Koh Kradam’s beauty as well as its ecosystem.
“Regardless of the awards given, everyone is doing his best to protect the island. Hat Chao Mai National Park will now focus more on regulations (规章制度) to maintain the beauty of our environment,” Mr Prit said.
Mr Prit said more tourist arrivals are unavoidable now that the island’s beaches have gained global popularity. The marine park will invest (投资) more in the islands infrastructure (基础设施), including water and electricity, so visitors can have a good experience. Visitors are also required to strictly observe our regulations, he added.

A. To provide an explanation. B. To introduce its features.
C. To make a comparison. D. To state an opinion.
2. Which of the following can best describe the Koh Kradam Island
A. Strange. B. Charming. C. Historic. D. Empty.

Summer is always a busy travel season, but even at peak times like July, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll see lots of hotels with No Vacancy (空房) signs. More and more travelers are choosing instead to stay in vacation rentals: decorated private houses, rooms, or apartments that only you and your party share for the period of your stay. Or you can get adventurous and book a cabin, a tree house, a houseboat, or even a castle.
The idea appeared in 2007, when Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia, the owners of a hotel, realizing that a San Francisco tech meeting would make hotel rooms in the area harder to come by, let travelers sleep on air mattresses (充气床垫) in their apartment for a fee. They called it Air Bed and Breakfast, and the company—now known as Airbnb—is worth almost $100 billion today and has six million listings worldwide.
More space is a major attraction of this accommodation (住宿): the average hotel room measures just 330 square feet, while the average vacation rental room tops 1,300. And in 20 of the largest U. S. cities, average daily rates are comparable to (or slightly lower than) those of hotels.
If you’re willing to share your own digs while you’re away, Love Home Swap pairs you with like-minded travelers for stays in each other’s homes for a membership fee as low as $ 11 per month. If you’d like to list your home, check your local zoning laws, as some areas have strict rules on short-term rentals. In parts of Honolulu, a new law taking effect in October will up the minimum stay to 90 days.
4. What can we learn from Paragraph 1
A. Vacation rentals have replaced hotels nowadays.
B. Travelers have more options of where to live now.
C. Hotels have no empty rooms during travel seasons.
D. Instead of staying in rentals, travelers choose private rooms.
5. What inspired Chesky and Gebbia to start vacation rentals
A. The presence of the Airbnb. B. The requirement of travelers.
C. The shortage of hotel rooms. D. The popularity of air mattresses.
6. If you want to use Love Home Swap, you should ______.
A. become its member first B. rent your house for free
C list your house for at least 90 days D. find partners with the similar ideas
7. What’s the purpose of the passage
A. To list the various rentals for travelers.
B. To urge hotels to take on more vacation rentals.
C. To compare two different ways to spend vacation.
D. To introduce a new trend on vacation accommodation.

There are few writers who have had such an impact on the thinking of the modern world as British writer George Orwell(乔治·奥威尔) (1903 — 1950). Orwell wrote many things on a variety of topics, for example, poverty in England in the 1930s during the Great Depression and his experience in the Spanish Civil War (1936 —1939).
But he is most famous for his works of fiction, Animal Farm (1945) and, especially, Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). These last books became especially influential in the West in the 1950s during the early Cold War years.
In Nineteen Eighty-Four, Orwell imagined a Britain of the future, modeled on the Soviet Union. His terrible story of Winston Smith, a regular man who comes into conflict with the government, was close to the fears of many people of the time. Ideas from the novel soon entered everyday culture, and are still in use today. “Big Brother”, for example, is a phrase from the book that refers to how authority(权威) is always looking over one’s shoulder.
Other phrases used in the novel, like “War is Peace” and “Freedom is slavery” are also still used now. Indeed, many people see Orwell’s book as warnings about what might happen if those in power become corrupted(腐败).
Even today, Orwell remains an influential voice. Often, writers achieve great fame and popularity, but they don’t affect how people live their everyday lives. For example, British author J.K. Rowling is a huge literary success, but people wouldn’t say that Harry Potter has affected the way people think about politics. For better or for worse, however, George Orwell has.
It’s because of Orwell’s influence on popular thinking that UNESCO’S Memory of the World Programme recently decided to include a collection of Orwell’s writings on its register.
The Memory of the World register is similar to UNESCO’s world heritage site program, which protects places and buildings and natural features in the world. According to its website, the idea behind the body is that “the world’s documentary evidence belongs to all” and should be “permanently accessible to all” .
University College London, which proposed the idea to UNESCO, said in its application that Orwell’s work “had a great influence on human thought in all parts of the world, an influence that remains potent today”.
8. Which of the following statements about George Orwell is true
A. His books were all well-received during the late Cold War.
B. He mainly wrote about imaginative, beautiful worlds.
C. His writings are often compared to those of O. Henry.
D. He’s had a lasting influence on human thought than most of the writers.
9. The novel Nineteen Eighty-Four is about ________.
A. the serious effects of poverty in England
B. the cruelty of war in the 20th century
C. a corrupt UK government of the future
D. people’s various conflicts with the government
10. The phrases from Orwell’s books are mentioned in the article mainly to ________.
A. show how he described the dark side of society
B. stress his ideas are still meaningful today
C. show how he used language in a creative way
D. share some of his classic ideas
11. What does the underlined word “potent” mean in the last paragraph
A. Powerful. B. Practical. C. Pleasant. D. Polite.
D
Chinese e-commerce platforms (电商平台) are working with Brazil to develop new customers and increase sales, as cross-country online marketplaces have become an important new driving force for supporting the growth of China’s foreign trade and promoting cooperation with Latin America.
PDD Holdings, the parent company of Chinese e-commerce platform Pinduoduo, launched its cross-country e-commerce platform Temu in Brazil in June and the step is considered the most important in the company’s expansion (扩张) plans in the Latin American market.
Temu’s online business in Latin America already covers Chile, Peru, Mexico and Panama. The platform offers a wide selection of products at competitive prices. With a growing number of customers, the company saw the opportunity to localize more of the supply chain to benefit small businesses and the wider economy. By the end of 2026, local businesses are expected to account for almost 85 percent of all trades made in Brazil. The company also announced the launch of a local marketplace with third-party Brazilian sellers supporting small and medium-sized businessmen. Besides, the size of Brazil’s e-commerce market will reach $52.87 billion in 2024, and stand at $125.68 billion in 2029.
Cui Lili, director of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics’ Institute of E-commerce, said that Chinese online traders should learn more about related laws, regulations and quality standards in these countries, and make products that meet local requirements.

After I had pictured it over and over again in my mind, the big day finally arrived: my first day at senior high! I woke up early and rushed out of the door in my eagerness to get to know my new school. On the way, the morning breeze brushing my cheeks like a friendly hello, I kept wondering what my new teachers would be like — maybe strict but kind, or funny and easy to talk to
The campus was still quiet when I arrived, so I decided to explore a bit. Anxious and excited, I told myself, “Lee, you will have a good beginning.” Some birds singing, I walked past the gym and stopped to look at the noticeboard. I was looking at the photos on the noticeboard when I heard a voice behind me. “New here ” Turning around suddenly, I crashed straight into someone. Then I heard the sound of a cup hitting the ground, and immediately saw the spilled coffee. Looking up, my face burning, I saw a handsome and young man with brown hair. His clean white shirt now had a dark brown mark, and it was spreading across his chest. “Oh, no!” I yelped. All the excitement about the new day disappeared, replaced by panic (惊慌)。
He quickly pulled out a tissue to wipe up the coffee stain on the floor. “It’s all right,” he said, “accidents happen.” I froze there, forgetting to help, “I... I am terribly sorry. I was just wondering what life is going to be like here.” “Don’t worry,” he gave me a smile. “You’ll soon find out.” He picked up the pieces of the cup and said goodbye to me.
How true his words were! When my head teacher stepped into the classroom, I was surprised to see the same handsome man I had met earlier.
“Good morning, everyone. Before we start, please come to the front one by one and introduce yourself to the class. I’ll go first. My family name is Brown....” Hearing his words, my heart began to beat wildly.
