In April 2022, Uday Bhatia, a student from Delhi, India, visited Bichpuri as a volunteer for a

2-day programme. During his stay, he found that the biggest problem the local children faced
was repeated power cuts, which made it difficult for them to study. That left a deep impact on
Uday.
Uday came back to Delhi and took immediate action to approach the problem. He soon
understood that residents of villages like Bichpuri couldn’t afford electrical devices. He wanted to
find and develop a solution to rural India’s power shortage. After 24 attempts, the 18-year-old
built the solution — Uday Electric — a bulb that can offer a power backup (备用) of almost 10
hours in case of a power cut.
Explaining how the bulb works, Uday states that the technology used is very simple.
“When the bulb is connected to a power source, energy gets stored in the battery. When the
power supply is cut off, the bulb uses the energy stored in the battery to give out light,” he
explains.
At first, he established a bulb with a four-hour backup. But he wanted to provide a backup
of 8-10 hours. Thanks to his love of computer science, he developed a way to change the bulb’s
brightness, increasing the backup time without increasing the size of the battery. The bulb now
comes with settings 1o change the brightness.
Uday sold each bulb at only 250 rupees (3 dollars) and has so far sold over 7,000 units in
many remote villages. But what Uday did went beyond business; he donated 950 units to houses
in the poorest areas through a non-governmental organisation, bringing joy to those living
without electricity. “When I saw the joy on people’s faces when their houses were lit up, I felt on
top of the world. No feeling could come close to it,” says Uday.
Uday won the Diana Award 2023, which honours “remarkable young people selflessly
creating positive social change”. He wishes to bring bulb to as many houses as he can in the
coming years.

The workplace is also affected by these biases. Research shows that attractive people are
more likely to be hired, promoted and earn higher salaries. Employers often naturally link
attractiveness to ability, confidence and leadership qualities. This creates a disadvantage for
people who don’t meet traditional beauty standards, forcing them to work harder to gain
recognition.

The Center for Digital Thriving (繁荣) , a new research and innovation center, was opened
at Harvard Graduate School of Education. Its work seeks to change understanding of how young
people and everyone else can thrive in a technology-filled world. The Center was founded by
researchers Carrie James and Emily Weinstein, who have worked for more than a decade to
explore the emerging (新 兴 的 ) digital landscape that young people are facing today and to
answer questions about what it’s like for teens to grow up with social media.
“We can’t get around the simple truth that technology greatly shapes teens’ experiences
today,” says Emily. “Technology is hugely important to students’ lives, learning, relationships and
development. It matters for their well-being (幸福) and sense of self.”
Emily and Carrie explored these issues most recently in their book Behind Their Screens,
which documents just how much adults have been missing in their understanding of how teens
interact with the screens that surround them. “The main feature of our research has been
slowing down and really listening to teens as they talk about growing up with today’s
technologies,” says Carrie. “Putting teens’ voices and stories at the center has been
transformative.”
The book shows adults are worried about teens and their screen time, noting that parents
need to get rid of the “us-versus-them” mindset. Instead, learning how to take an “us-and-them”
approach helps build connection and healthy tech habits. Emily advises against strict rules about
social media use or blaming the current adolescent mental health problems entirely on social
media or devices. Families, she explains, would be better off if parents discussed their child’s
social media use in more positive ways. Be more of a coach, she says, and less of a judge.
In their previous research, Emily and Carrie found that text messages that were marked
“read” without replies from the receiver were a common anxiety source for teens. Young people
today need better access to the resources that can help them navigate the ups and downs of
adolescence in the digital age. The Center is not only providing those resources but putting them
where young people are, creating opportunities for all young people to thrive as technology
continues to develop.

in public places. In addition to the railway station, I have been going to places where there are
many restaurants and bars. We work in groups of three, and try to stop people from smoking.
Fortunately, most smokers are supportive and put out their cigarettes when we ask them to, but
that was not the case in the early days — some smokers could become quite violent.
I like being a volunteer. The work is exciting and makes me feel young. It has now become part of
