At 65, Mary Ann O’Neil could have enjoyed a quiet retirement in her hometown of Manchester. Instead, she
boarded a plane to Kenya in 2022, answering a call to teach at St. Jude’s Primary School in the rural village of
Kibera. The school, with 400 students in grades 1 — 8, had no full-time English teacher, and its 6th graders
scored just 12% on the national English exam.
“Many children here drop out after primary school because they can’t pass the secondary school entrance
exam,” says O’Neil. Her first challenge: a class of 60 6th graders with zero exposure to grammar rules. She started
by dividing them into small groups, using local proverbs like “Harambee” (pulling together) to teach collective
nouns. To make lessons relatable, she incorporated maize (玉米) farming — Kibera’s main livelihood — into
stories: “If a farmer plants seeds carelessly, will the harvest be good That’s why we need subject-verb agreement!”
O ‘Neil’s dedication went beyond the classroom. She noticed 11-year-old Aisha often skipped lunch to save
money for her brother’s tuition. Aisha’s parents had spent their savings on the brother’s fees, with her father stating,
“Girls marry out — investing in them is wasted.” To support Aisha, O’Neil packed her daily lunch, tutored her
after class, and launched a crowdfunding campaign to cover fees for Aisha and 22 other students.
By 2025, her efforts bore fruit. St. Jude’s 6th graders’ English scores soared to 78%, and 18 students —
including Aisha — earned scholarships to secondary schools, a first for the village.
Headteacher Josephme Mwangi credits O’ Neil: “She didn’t just teach English; she taught hope. Now, parents
who once thought ‘girls don’t need school’ are lining up to enroll their daughters.”
O’Neil, who extended her stay from one to three years, plans to train local teachers before returning to the UK.
“My legacy isn’t in test scores,” she says, “but in Aisha’s smile when she said, ‘Teacher, I want to be a doctor.’”
4 What was the main problem of St. Jude’s primary school before O’Neil arrived
A. Poor English performance. B. Lack of math teachers.
C. Shortage of farming-related courses. D. Few opportunities to take English exams.
5. Why did O’Neil use maize farming in her lessons
A. To make grammar rules more relevant to students’ lives.
B. To prepare students for agricultural careers.
C. To teach students about Kenya’s economic structure.
D. To encourage students to help with family farming.
第 4页/共 16页
6. What can we infer about Aisha’s family before O’Neil’s intervention
A. They encouraged Aisha to pursue her dream.
B. They prioritized boys’ education over girls’.
C. They prohibited Aisha from attending school.
D. They couldn’t afford any child’s school fees.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Breaking Barriers: The Fight for Girls’ Education in Kibera.
B. The Power of Harambee: Raising Test Scores in Rural Kenya.
C. More Than a Teacher: A Retiree’s Fight for Hope and Equality in Rural Kenya.
D. Crowdfunding for Education: How One Teacher Changed a Village.

A recent study, led by Professor Andrew Barron, Dr. HaDi MaBouDi, and Professor James Marshall,
illustrates how evolution has fine-tuned honeybees to make quick judgments while minimizing danger.
“Animal lives are full of decisions,” says Professor Barron. “A honeybee has a brain smaller than a sesame (芝
麻) seed. But it can make decisions faster and more accurately than we can. A robot programmed to do a bee’s job
would need the backup of a supercomputer.”
Bees must work with both efficiency and speed, making rapid decisions during their search for food as they
need to identify flowers full of sweet liquid while avoiding threats at the same time. While flying, they face dangers
from hunters in the air, and when landing, they become exposed to hidden enemies that hide themselves as part of
the flowers and plants.
Researchers trained 20 bees to associate each of the five different colored “flower disks” with their visit
history of reward and punishment. Blue flowers always had sugar juice. Green flowers always had a type of liquid
with a bitter taste for bees. Other colors sometimes had glucose (葡萄糖). “Then we introduced each bee to a
‘garden’ with artificial ‘flowers’. We filmed each bee and timed their decision-making process,” says Dr. MaBouDi.
“If the bees were confident that a flower would have food, they quickly decided to land on it, taking an average of
0.6 seconds. If they were confident that a flower wouldn’t have food, they made a decision just as quickly. If
unsure, they took on average 1.4 seconds, and the time reflected the probability that a flower had food.”
The team then built a computer model mirroring the bees’ decision-making process. They found the structure
of the model looked very similar to the physical layout of a bee brain. “AI researchers can learn much from bees
and other ‘simple’ animals. Millions of years of evolution has led to incredibly efficient brains with very low power

requirements,” says Professor Marshall who co-founded a company that uses insect brain patterns to enable
machines to move autonomously, like nature.
8. According to Professor Barron, what is special about bees’ brains
A. They are very large in size.
B. They need supercomputers to help them.
C. They work more slowly than human brains.
D. They can make quick and accurate decisions.
9. What do bees need to avoid while working according to paragraph 3
A Finding too many flowers. B. Being hunted by enemies.
C. Working with other bees. D. Flying in bad weather.
10. What did researchers use to train the bees in the experiment
A. Supercomputers and robots. B. Hidden enemies and threats.
C. Real flowers with sweet liquid. D. Artificial flowers with different colors.
11. What message does Professor James Marshall want to give us
A. Biology can inspire future AI.
B. The power of bee brains is underestimated.
C. Autonomous machines are changing nature.
D. AI should be far more efficient.

Chia seeds (奇亚籽), those tiny, oval-shaped powerhouses, have become more than just a social media hit —
they’re a top choice for health enthusiasts worldwide. Made famous by trends like the “internal shower”, where
they’re mixed with water and lemon to aid digestion, these seeds come from the Salvia Hispanica L. plant, native to
the warm regions of southern Mexico and northern Guatemala. Their rise in popularity isn’t just hype (炒作); they’
re packed with nutrients that make them a standout in the superfood world.
Nutritionist Valentina Cartago explains, “Chia seeds are nutritional all-stars.” A 100-gram serving delivers 17
grams of protein, 34.4 grams of fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, magnesium, and antioxidants. Even a small
2-tablespoon (28 gram) portion provides 4.7 grams of protein and 9.8 grams of fiber, making them easy to add into
daily meals. Add them to smoothies for a creamy texture, put them into puddings for extra thickness, or sprinkle
them over salads to boost nutrition — no fancy recipes needed.
But there’s a catch: dry chia seeds absorb liquid quickly, expanding to several times their size. Eating them
第 6页/共 16页
dry can lead to uncomfortable bloating as they swell in the stomach. Their high fiber content might also upset the
digestive system of those not used to it. Cartago advises, “Always soak them in liquids like almond milk or juice,
or mix them into moist foods like oatmeal. This is especially important for anyone with swallowing difficulties.”
Research backs up their benefits, too. Studies link chia seeds to lower risks of heart disease and type 2 diabetes
(糖尿病), thanks to their fiber and omega-3s. They also support healthy digestion by adding bulk to stool.
Dermatologist Dr. Simon Ourian points out another benefit: “Their omega-3s reduce skin inflammation and lock in
moisture, while antioxidants fight damage from harmful substances, keeping skin looking youthful and fresh.”
12. What can be known from the first paragraph
A. Chia seeds are mainly grown in cold regions.
B. The “internal shower” is the only way to eat chia seeds.
C. Chia seeds’ popularity is only due to social media trends.
D. Chia seeds are popular for more than just being a trend.
13. What is the main Idea of the second paragraph
A. The scientific process behind chia seeds’ nutritional benefits.
B. How to accurately measure chia seeds for maximum health effects.
C. Chia seeds are rich in nutrients and easy to include in daily meals.
D. Why chia seeds are considered a superfood compared to other seeds.
14. What does the underlined word “catch” probably mean in the third paragraph
A. A type of nutrient. B. A special cooking method.
C. A hidden problem or disadvantage. D. A popular way to eat something.
15. What is Dr. Simon Qurian’s attitude towards chia seeds
A. Critical. B. Optimistic. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.

Looking back at the high school days, I realize that they were the darkest yet the sweetest moments in my life.
I felt extremely lonely there. Among the 790 new students, I didn’t recognize a single face from my middle school,
and I struggled to make new friends.
At home, things weren’t much better. My little brother was too young to have anything to do with me. My
elder brother was busy planning and preparing for his college life. My older sister was outgoing and never without

her friends. Dad was working in a faraway city. Mom, who used to wait for me to come home and was always there
to give me a big hug when I had to get the bad feelings off my chest, had also changed.
On the very first day I returned from school, she greeted me with criticism, “Carole, your bedroom’s a disaster.
You’re grown up now! Can’t you keep it clean ”
At the moment, the last thing I needed was her criticism. I just wanted a big hug or a few heart-warm words
from her.
“Mom, I...” I tried to explain, but a phone ring cut me off.
“One minute, Carole!” Mom said, turning to answer the phone.
I watched her discussing something with her editor. I saw her nodding her head now and then. Then she sat
down by her desk to take notes. I knew she was a hardworking writer and a nice Mom who was strict with herself
and devoted to us. I knew she’d been busy lately — but still, I couldn’t help feeling hurt and unseen.
Back to my room, I started to do my math homework. Unfortunately, I made one mistake after another that
day.
“How stupid I am!” I thought bitterly.

Dear David,
How are you doing I am writing to tell you that an English Drama Festival will be held in our school.
The festival will take place in the school theater from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm next Friday. During the festival, we
will watch wonderful performances of classic plays, and some students will perform on stage. As a native English
speaker and drama lover, you are welcome to perform in the festival, which will be a great experience.
I’d be more than delighted if you could come and share this joyful moment with me. Looking forward to your
early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】Each time I made a mistake, I would tear the paper out. By the time I finished my homework, the floor
was covered with piles of waste paper and my bedroom seemed even messier. Strangely, the bigger mess gave me a
sense of satisfaction I had never experienced before. I even cut some of the waste paper into tiny pieces and threw
them under the bed. Then I closed the door violently and left home without a word.
I came home very late in the evening. But when I dragged myself to my bedroom and opened the door, I
stopped in surprise — it was tidy and clean. Obviously, Mom had cleaned it up after I left. As I stood there, I
realized that Mom’s love hadn’t changed at all. And slowly, my longing for a hug was gradually replaced by a
feeling that I would only truly understand years later when I became a parent myself.
