After finishing my teaching for a school year, I thought that I should go back to Montreal, Quebec, my hometown for a visit. My main goal was to relax in preparation for the challenges of my retirement in the coming year.
Through my stay in Montreal, I met lots of Chinese who are struggling to succeed and then lead a better life in Canada.
Some travelled thousands of miles to get knowledge. When I spoke with some of them about the major barrier they had to face after they arrived in Canada, they all talked about the two official languages of Canada. But I was impressed by their ability to express their ideas while switching between English and French.
Almost all of those people said they often felt homesick. They miss their families and friends. Though Montreal has lots of Chinese restaurants, they long for a homecooked meal.
I met some tourists who were trying to realize their childhood dreams of experiencing the life in a developed country. When I asked them if Montreal had lived up to their expectations, they hesitated. They said that reality never agrees with fantasy. However, they were glad to have the opportunity to visit Montreal and didn’t regret taking the trip.
Not all the Chinese people I met were happy. I once met a young lady who met with a gentleman through the Internet. However, to her disappointment, he disappeared after he promised to marry her in Montreal.
I was served by another Chinese person who could not handle the challenges of studying in an English environment and ended up working in a restaurant with minimum pay.
Exploring different parts of the world, without any doubt, is an enriching experience. However, one should be realistic when it comes to leaving his hometown to set up a new life in a foreign country. One should take the time to examine the advantages and the shortcomings of the venture before they decide to chase an uncertain dream of achieving success or leading a better life.
34. The writer went to her hometown to ______.
A. meet her old friends
B. study a new language
C. go on with her teaching
D. prepare for her retirement life

A. food B. homesickness C. language D. income

A. overseas Chinese are good at communication in Canada
B. the trip to Montreal is a good chance for people to study
C. overseas Chinese feel disappointed at their life in Canada
D. people should think carefully before chasing the dreams abroad
37. What is the best title for the passage
A. Improving Life Skills in Canada
B. Exploring Different Parts of Canada
C. Struggling for a Better Life in Canada
D. Going to Canada — Your Ideal Destination

Experts like to say the best form of exercise is whatever kind you’ll actually do. But that may not always be the case; new research finds that people who combine exercise with their social lives may be at an advantage over solitary(独自) exercising. Tennis, badminton and soccer are all better for longevity(长寿) than cycling, swimming, jogging or gym exercise, according to the research.
The study was based on data from about 8,500 adults who were part of the Copenhagen City Heart Study. They completed a health and lifestyle questionnaire, which included questions about type and frequency of physical activity, and were monitored by the researchers for around 25 years, a period during which about 4,500 of the subjects died.
Tennis came out on top in the pared with people sitting all day, those who reported playing tennis as their main form of exercise could expect to add 9.7 years to their life time, followed by badminton (6.2 years), soccer (4.7 years), cycling (3.7 years), swimming (3.4 years), jogging (3.2 years) and health-club activities (1.5 years).
Tennis likely took the top spot because “it’s very interactive,” says study co - author Dr. James O’Keefe, a physician at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute. “At every point you’re talking. It’s just a very natural way to emotionally bond with people, besides getting your exercise.” But he adds that the study may not have been able to fully account for the fact that wealthier, better - educated people — who tend to be healthier to begin with — may be more likely to play tennis.
Activities like running and weight lifting still extend your life and offer plenty of other health benefits. But for the best possible benefits, O’Keefe says gym-goers may want to consider combining those workouts with activities that foster social connection.
O’Keefe, whose exercise typically includes running and weight lifting, says he’s even changed his own behavior because of the study: he and his family have taken up badminton.
“You can’t play badminton without feeling like a kid again,” he says. “It’s just pure fun.”
38. Which of the following is best for living a long life
A. Cycling. B. Badminton.
C. Swimming. D. Gym exercise.
39. How many people were still living at the end of the research
A. About 8,500. B. About 4,500.
C. About 4,000. D. About 2,500.
40. What matters most to the result of the research
A. Family life. B. Social connections.
C. Frequency of exercise. D. Wealth and education.
41. What does O’ Keefe do after the finding
A. He puts the theory into practice.
B. He plays badminton just for fun.
C. He feels like playing badminton with kids.
D. He takes more exercise than before.
D
Is your glass half-empty or half-full How you answer this question may show your outlook on life, your attitude towards yourself, and whether you’re optimistic or pessimistic — and it may even affect your health.
Some studies show that personality can affect many areas of your health. The positive thinking that usually comes with optimism is a key part of effective stress management. And effective stress management is connected with many health benefits. If you tend to be pessimistic, don’t despair — you can learn positive thinking skills.
Positive thinking doesn’t mean that you disregard less pleasant situations in your life. Positive thinking just means that you deal with unpleasantness in a more positive and productive way.
Positive thinking often starts with self - talk. Self - talk is the endless stream of unspoken thoughts that run through your head. These automatic(无意识的) thoughts can be positive or negative. If the thoughts are mostly negative, your outlook on life is more likely pessimistic. If your thoughts are mostly positive, you’re likely an optimist — someone who practices positive thinking.
Researchers continue to explore the effects of positive thinking and optimism on health. They found that people who had a more positive outlook were more likely to get regular physical exercise, eat a healthier diet, and get more quality sleep. Clearly, there are many benefits of positive thinking. But why does positive thinking have such a strong effect on physical and mental health
One reason is that having a positive outlook enables you to deal better with stressful situations, which reduces the harmful health effects of stress on your body. It’s also thought that positive and optimistic people tend to live healthier lifestyles — they get more physical activities and follow a healthier diet.
Even if you are not a natural-born optimist, there are things you can do to learn how to think more positively and become a positive thinker. Here are some examples of negative self - talk and ways to turn them into positive thinking.
Negative self - talk I’ve never done it before. There’s no way it will work. No one communicates with me. I’m not going to get any better at this. Positive thinking It’s an opportunity to learn something new. I can try to make it work. I’ll see if I can start the conversation. I’ll give it another try.
If you tend to have a negative outlook, don’t expect to become an optimist overnight. But with practice, gradually your self-talk will have less self-criticism(自我批判) and more self - acceptance. You may also become less critical of the world around you.
42. The word “disregard” in Paragraph 3 probably means “______”.
A. lose interest in B. set a limit on C. look forward to D. pay no attention to
43. Which of the following examples shows positive thinking
A. I can work this out with time. B. This problem is beyond me.
C. I don’t have the resources. D. I don’t think I can do it.
44. The writer probably agrees that ______.
A. pessimistic thinkers are born with it
B. pessimists always have bad sleep quality
C. positive thinkers manage stressful situations well
D. having a positive outlook helps you avoid unpleasantness
45. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage
A. To introduce optimism and pessimism.
B. To show how self-talk affects the thoughts.
C. To highlight the benefits of positive thinking.
D. To encourage people to be positive by practicing.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that sets in or starts in the winter months. Unlike other types of depression, it may improve as spring comes on. It is often a periodic recurring disorder — you’ll feel depressed every winter and begin to feel better each spring. SAD depression is caused by lowered levels of serotonin(血清素), the mood-affecting brain chemical that is caused by seasonal changes in daylight. Shorter days may also disrupt the body’s biological clock, which upsets the balance of melatonin(褪黑激素), the hormone which regulates mood and sleep patterns.
Seasonal affective disorder is far more common in northern climates, where days can be very short in winter. SAD affects more women than men and is more likely to occur in people under age 40 than those older that.
How to deal with it Although any amount of outdoor light can help raise serotonin levels, getting light in the morning seems to offer the most benefit. If the weather permits, take a walk. In your home or office, try sitting close to a window that faces south. Replacing light bulbs in your home with full spectrum light bulbs can help because they give out light similar to sunlight.
Studies have shown that increasing your exercise routine can counteract SAD. Exercise raises levels of serotonin. Moderate exercise, which means neither too much nor too little exercise, such as walking, riding a stationary bike or swimming is a great way to get started. But any activities that raise your heart rate, including daily chores, can help, especially if you can do them outdoors or near a sunny window. Yoga, jogging and Tai chi can all help lift your mood.
Year - end panic refers to the self-blame and overall feeling of panic brought about by the approach of the year’s end, often due to a poor financial year and pressure from work and family. Psychological experts suggest that we should avoid peer competition. While regretting for the failed plans in the past year, you can still make resolution to do it better in the coming year.
68. What is SAD (不多于15个单词)

69. Who are more likely to suffer from SAD (不多于6个单词)

  Dear Jim,
I totally understand how you feel. Starting to learn a new language like Chinese can be challenging and stressful at first.
Here are some ways to relieve pressure. First, don’t push yourself too hard. Learn at a comfortable pace and celebrate small progress, which will boost your confidence. Second, practice Chinese in daily life, such as watching Chinese cartoons or listening to simple songs. It makes learning fun and less tiring. Finally, talk to other members in the club. You can share difficulties and learn from each other.
Hope these tips help. You’re doing great—keep going!
  Yours,
  Li Hua
