The following list of winter festivals can help to plan your trip or plan around them, as many of these festivals will tie up transport and accommodations and drive up prices. It’s all up to you: either plan your travel dates around them, or arrive early enough to jump into the festive atmosphere!
Lighting Festival
A day-trip away from South Korea’s capital Seoul, the Garden of Morning Calm is a must-see during the festival. The lights there cover an area of some 330,000 square meters, using 30,000 colorful LED lights hanging from the trees. Wander around the fairy-like wonderland created by the lights-through such fields like Bonsai Garden, Moonlight Garden,
and the Garden of Eden.
Where: Gapyeong County, South Korea
When: December-Mid-March
Harbin Ice Festival
Millions of tourists visit this icy festival every year, drawn by the massive ice sculptures that decorate the fairgrounds next to Songhua River. The sculptures, ice palaces, mazes and slides are simply massive in size, constructed from some 260,000 cubic yards of ice blocks harvested from the river. They range in size from life-scale carvings of animals and fantastic creatures, to massive 250-foot structures that tower over the crowds.
Where: Harbin, China
When: January 5-February 5
Sapporo Snow Festival
Japan’s biggest winter festival has expanded in size and scope since its first celebration in 1950.The Festival covers two main sites in Sapporo. The centerpiece Odori Park site features some 100 ice sculptures dazzlingly lit up after dark. The Susukino district site features a smaller scale of ice sculptures decorating the district. The sculptures cover animals both real and fantastic, including anime-based creatures like Pokemon. Visitors can also enjoy snow mazes, street food, musical performances and skating on the ice rink near Odori Park.
Where: Sapporo, Japan
When: February 4-11
Sky Lantern Festival
The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival in Taiwan, China is Taiwan’s most visited lantern festival, lighting the skies with floating lanterns bearing messages for the gods. Its counterpart in the Yangshui District favors a noisier kind of illumination-the Tainan Yanshui Fireworks Display takes place at Tainan’s Wumiao Temple, where locals dare to be hit by small fireworks as a test of their strength and to ward off evil.

In the autumn of 1986, I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.
My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.
Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopted and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No.3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy.
You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8! Our home was a complete zoo--a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each term.
The hardest part was feeling guilty (愧疚的) about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to give up, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest oftheir lives.
In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree!
I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you’re looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you’re in the middle of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won’t arrive in your life on one day. It’s a process. Remember: little steps add up to big dreams.
24. Why did the author leave school in her second year of college
A. She fell in love and got married. B. She wanted to study by herself.
C. She decided to look after her grandma. D. She suffered from a serious illness.
25. What can we learn about the author from Paragraphs 4-5
A. She wanted to remain a full-time housewife.
B. She was too confused to make a correct choice.
C. She seldom felt guilty about her sons.
D. She was busy yet happy with her family life.
26. What does the author mostly want to tell us in the last paragraph
A.Little by little, one goes far. B. Well begun, half done.
C. Failure is the mother of success. D. Every coin has two sides.
27. Which of the following can best describe the author
A. Childish and single-minded. B. Ambitious and outgoing.
C. Honest and responsible. D. Caring and determined.

There are few writers who have had such an impact on the thinking of the modern world as British writer George Orwell (乔治·奥威尔) (1903—1950). Orwell wrote many things on a variety of topics, for example, poverty in England in the 1930s during the Great Depression and his experience in the Spanish Civil War (1936—1939).
But he is most famous for his works of fiction, Animal Farm (1945) and, especially, Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). These last books became especially influential in the West in the 1950s during the early Cold War years.
In Nineteen Eighty-Four, Orwell imagined a Britain of the future, modeled on the Soviet Union. His terrible story of Winston Smith, a regular man who comes into conflict with the government, was close to the fears of many people of the time. Ideas from the novel soon entered everyday culture, and are still in use today. “Big Brother”, for example, is a phrase from the book that refers to how authority (权威) is always looking over one’s shoulder.
Other phrases used in the novel, like “War is Peace” and “Freedom is slavery” are also still used now. Indeed, many people see Orwell’s book as warnings about what might happen if those in power become corrupted (腐败).
Even today, Orwell remains an influential voice. Often, writers achieve great fame and popularity, but they don’t affect how people live their everyday lives. For example, British author J.K. Rowling is a huge literary success, but people wouldn’t say that Harry Potter has affected the way people think about politics. For better or for worse, however, George Orwell has.
It’s because of Orwell’s influence on popular thinking that UNESCO’S Memory of the World Programme recently decided to include a collection of Orwell’s writings on its register.
The Memory of the World register is similar to UNESCO’s world heritage site program, which protects places and buildings and natural features in the world. According to its website, the idea behind the body is that “the world’s documentary evidence belongs to all” and should be “permanently accessible to all” .
University College London, which proposed the idea to UNESCO, said in its application that Orwell’s work “had a great influence on human thought in all parts of the world, an influence that remains potent today”.
28. Which of the following statements about George Orwell is true
A. His books were all well-received during the late Cold War.
B. He mainly wrote about imaginative, beautiful worlds.
C. His writings are often compared to those of O. Henry.
D. He’s had a lasting influence on human thought than most of the writers.
29. The novel Nineteen Eighty-Four is about ________.
A. the serious effects of poverty in England
B. the cruelty of war in the 20th century
C. a corrupt UK government of the future
D. people’s various conflicts with the government
30. The phrases from Orwell’s books are mentioned in the article mainly to ________.
A. show how he described the dark side of society
B. stress his ideas are still meaningful today
C. show how he used language in a creative way
D. share some of his classic ideas
31. What does the underlined word ‘potent ’ mean in the last paragraph
A. Powerful. B. Practical. C. Pleasant. D. Polite.
D
“Mango, a ‘culturally competent robot,’ was tested on care home residents in Britain and Japan--those persons who used it for up to 18 hours over the course of two weeks saw an improvement in their mental (精神上的) health,” researchers found.
Mango was part of a large global study known as CARESSES, which investigated(调查) the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in caring for the elderly. The scientists behind the study also found that “after two weeks of using the system there was a small but positive effect on loneliness among users.”
Mango is fully autonomous, meaning that it is not controlled by a person. Mango, which can play music and entertainment (娱乐), does not just ask and answer questions but can actually join in and continue conversation (谈话).
It has been designed to be “culturally competent,” meaning that it can respond to the culture-specific (文化特定的) needs of older people.
Dr. Chris, principal lecturer in public health at the UK’s University of Bedfordshire, was the lead author of the three-year project. He described the study as “groundbreaking”, adding: “The results show that using the CARESSES artificial intelligence in robots such as Mango has real potential (潜在的) benefit to a world where more people are living longer with fewer people to look after them. ”
“The project has now shown that the system could and did improve mental health and reduce loneliness,” Dr. Chris said. “However, it is just at a prototype (最初形态) level and there are many technical limitations.”
He thought it would take a further two to three years of research, before robots such as Mango could actually be introduced to care homes.
“We really believe that this isn’t about replacing care--a robot can’t do what a human can do. But they can be a useful helper for people’s mental health,” Dr. Chris said.
32. According to Paragraphs 1 and 2, what can Mango do, especially for the elderly
A. It can help them live much longer. B. It can investigate them.
C. It can promote their mental health. D. It can test them.
33. What can we infer about Mango according to the passage
A. Mango has been globally sold and used.
B. Mango can replace human to care for the elderly.
C. Mango has not any technical limitation.
D. Mango is of some help to the elderly.
34. What is Dr. Chris’ attitude to the future of the robots such as Mango
A. He feels hopeful for it. B. He is uncertain of it.
C. He pays no attention to it. D. He worries about it.
35. Which section of a newspaper is the passage most probably taken from
A. Education. B. Science. C. Travel. D. Sports.

How to repair a damaged friendship It may be hard, but fixing a broken friendship will make it even stronger than before. Here are some tips that will be useful.
Be the one to reach out before the other.
36 Let it be you this time. It will show them that you want to be friends again, and you’re serious about resolving things. Think about how you can reach them. Depending on the person and the severity of your argument, you may need to try a few different ways to get in touch.
37
If your friend refuses to see or speak with you, or visiting them in person isn’t an option, you may want to just back off for a while. Your friend wants space and that should be respected. Use the time to reflect on the situation and prepare what you want to say. Don’t push your friend if it’s clear they want space. It will only upset them and make them frustrated with you.
Talk about the problem honestly and openly.
Explain what you feel is the problem and be honest about it. Then ask them to do the same. Let them talk for as long as they need to. Really listen and don’t interrupt them. 38
Apologize to them and accept their apology.
Even if you didn’t do anything and you believe the situation is their fault, opening with an apology sets the tone. You could say “I’m really sorry things have gotten to this point. I want things to be better between us.” If you did wrong them in some way, apologize to them sincerely. 39
Avoid restarting an argument.
It’s important that you don’t say or do anything hurtful during this conversation. 40 So do your best to keep things peaceful. If things get heated, don’t allow them to escalate.
A. Respect your friend’s need for space.
B. Let go ofyour anger or frustration.
C. Come up with a plan for rebuilding the friendship.
D. If they apologize to you, accept their apology.
E. Argument will only further damage the friendship and make things worse.
F. If you aren’t talking to each other, someone will have to make the first move.
G. This way you both get to tell your side of the story and get everything out on the table.

On my first day in senior high school, my heart was racing and my legs were shaking. Though I was happy to have the opportunity to see my friends after a long summer break, I could not help but worry about what classes I was going to attend.
As I reached the classroom doors, my heart raced faster and I had butterflies in my stomach. So when I was seeing the letters reading “Welcome Freshmen” on the door, I took a deep breath as though I was going to perform in front of people. I opened the door, thinking that the class would be quiet, but it was filled with freshmen who were chatting with each other. I sat at the first empty desk I saw. The teacher was not there, so I began to chat with others, too.
Minutes later, our teacher entered. She was short in height and had black, silky hair. The frown (皱眉) on her face gave me an impression that she had a strong character but after her short introduction, I believed she was a very nice woman. Her name was Mrs. Hutchinson. Dear Tom,
I'm glad to hear you're interested in the "Learning Chinese" program on CCTV. It's a great program that covers daily conversations, Chinese culture, and basic grammar, designed to help foreign learners master Chinese step by step. The hosts are friendly and the content is easy to follow.
Here are some suggestions. First, watch the program regularly and repeat after the hosts to improve your pronunciation. Second, practice speaking with Chinese friends whenever possible. Third, learn some Chinese characters daily as they are essential for reading and writing.
Hope these help. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me.
  Yours,
  Li Hua
