Every year in April, Thailand celebrates Songkran. The festival marks the start of the traditional Thai New
Year and is well-known for its lively water fights, attracting tourists from all over the world.
Why is Songkran Celebrated in April
Songkran is Thailand’s most important annual festival. It is traditionally celebrated for three days starting
from the first full moon in April. This is because the country runs on the lunisolar Theravada Buddhist calendar.
The name Songkran comes from an ancient Sanskrit word meaning “to enter” or “to pass into”. These days, the
festival has a set start date of 13 April.
Why Do People Have Water Fights
Water plays a key role in Songkran. Traditionally, the first day begins with cleaning homes and pouring (倾倒)
water on Buddha images in temples. This act symbolizes washing away the past year’s bad luck to welcome the
New Year. On the second day, young people show respect (敬意) to their elders by pouring water over their hands
and feet in return for blessings (祝福) . Over time, these traditional water-related customs have turned into huge
water fights in the streets, loud music and street parties.
Best Places to Enjoy Songkran
Bangkok is the best city for Songkran fun. Khaosan Road has wild street parties and crowded water fights.
Music lovers can join the Siam Songkran Music Festival or the S2O Music Festival for water-themed concerts. To
see the more traditional side of the festival, head to riverside temples such as Wat Pho and Wat Arun, catch cultural
performances in Lumphini Park, or head north to the city of Chiang Mai.

Russ Miller was found to have a serious illness at 26. This condition affected his joints (关节), making it
increasingly difficult for him to do everyday tasks.
“My hands are not shaped properly and I can’t manipulate them normally,” Miller wrote to the company
where he worked. “I can no longer use normal computer keyboards and it’s hard for me to even hold a pen
anymore.”
Miller’s condition quickly got worse, leading him to lose his job. Unable to afford the apartment, he had to
live on the street. However, in 2018, he began to turn his life around.
“I was trying to ask for help and get out of my situation. I had a phone, but typing on regular (常规的)
keyboards was difficult. So I looked for different smartphone keyboards. I found Typewise by accident,” Miller
recalled.
He was very thankful for the Typewise smartphone keyboard, which he found much easier to use. It helped
him “get his life back” by allowing him to communicate with people, get an apartment, and even a job.
“Since I could type on my phone again, I used social media to contact an organization that helps people with
disabilities,” Miller said. “Now I have a part-time job taking care of dogs and cats. I can't work full time due to my
physical problems, but at least I have something to do and look forward to.”

Many of us were raised to finish everything we started, like a book, or the food on our plates. When we were
young, our attention spans (持续时间) were short, but life wasn’t filled with endless choices like it is for kids today.
A recent online discussion asks if parents should make kids finish all the food on their plates. Many adults
remember being told, “You can’t leave the table until you finish your food,” regardless of whether they were
already full. Now, should parents continue this rule or be more relaxed about mealtimes
Lara Zibarras, a psychologist and eating disorder recovery coach, advises against forcing kids to finish their
food. She explains that when kids are made to finish their plates, they learn to ignore their fullness and eat until
they’re uncomfortably stuffed. Most of us know the feeling of being nicely full. Eating past that point isn’t pleasant.
Forcing kids to do so can teach them to ignore their body’s signals.
Zibarras also reminds us that appetites (胃口) change daily. Adults sometimes eat more if they’ve been active
or used their brains a lot. Kids are similar. They might eat more during growth spurs or after a busy day of play,
and other times, they might not be very hungry — and that’s fine.
Some parents might enforce finishing food because they want to avoid their kids snacking on something else
that wasn’t prepared. Kids might say they’re “full” when they really just want to eat something else that tastes
better. But Zibarras says forcing kids to finish their plates doesn’t solve this. It can lead to problems with
self-regulation (自我调节). Kids might struggle to stop eating once they’re full. This could result in food anxieties
or even eating disorders later in life. “Eating disorders are serious mental health issues that can greatly affect a
person’s life,” Zibarras adds.
8. What is the online discussion mainly about
A. Kids’ eating habits. B. Healthy meals.
C. Parents’ main role. D. Food waste.
9. What is Zibarras’ opinion about the “Clean Your Plates” rule
A. Students should follow it. B. It may benefit our appetites.
C. Parents should throw it out. D. It is good for self-regulation.

10. Why do some parents make the kids finish their plates
A. To ensure that they are full up. B. To stop them eating snacks.
C. To show their cooking skills. D. To teach them to respect others.
11. What is a result of forcing kids to finish meals according to the text
A. They care about table manners. B. They avoid breaking rules at home.
C. They become more confident. D. They may suffer eating disorders.

Making exercise fun is a challenge for many people who struggle to find the motivation (动机) to work out.
But rather than forcing yourself to enjoy running or that gym class you once attended, the solution may lie in
something more straightforward — simply choosing exercises that fit your personality, according to a recent study
published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology.
To reach their findings, the study’s co-lead author, Flaminia Ronca, a professor in exercise science at
University College London, and her coworkers first directed the 132 subjects, aged between 25 and 51 years old, to
complete a questionnaire showing their personality types.
The study took a commonly used model that describes someone’s personality, namely outgoing people, quiet
worriers, kind helpers, curious explorers, and careful planners. The researchers then ran fitness tests on the subjects
and put them into two groups. One group was given an eight-week biking plan, while the control group did 10
minutes a week of stretching (伸展) exercises. Of the 132 subjects, 86 completed both pre- and post-testing either
side of these eight weeks.
The study team found that, although fitness improved across all personality types for those who completed the
biking and stretching programs, there was a marked difference in enjoyment of exercise. Outgoing people enjoyed
the higher-intensity (强度) lab fitness tests, while quiet worries enjoyed the home-based light-intensity workouts.
The study also showed how exercise affected people’s stress levels based on their personality. People who
scored high in neuroticism, meaning they feel more anxious, experienced a bigger drop in stress levels compared
with other groups.
“I think that’s quite a powerful message to give,” Ronca said. Considering the many benefits of exercise, she
hoped their findings would encourage people to find forms of exercise they enjoy, making it easier to stick to a
fitness routine and to improve their fitness over time.
12. In what way were the two groups different in terms of research design
A. Exercise type. B. Their hobby. C. Their age. D. Health condition.
第 6页/共 16页
13. What did the study find about personality
A. It drives people to achieve dreams. B. It shows similarities in certain ways.
C. It affects the enjoyment of exercise. D. It helps us complete more exercises.
14. What does Ronca intend to explain in the last paragraph
A. The background of the experiment. B. The application of the findings.
C. The direction of further research. D. The arrangement for daily exercise.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. The Influence of Exercise on Personality B. The Benefits of the Stretching Program
C. Giving You New Motivation to Exercise D. Matching Workouts to Your Personality

Practical Ways to Support Younger Students
A teacher recently emailed me the following question: “With older students, you can guide them to
informational resources and they can learn independently. ____16____ ” This is a common and valuable question.
But answering this question begins with considering the following tips.
·____17____. Young children learn best when they can explore ideas in different ways, not just through
reading. While reading aloud is helpful, videos, images, and hands-on activities also give children the chance to
learn. For example, you could set up walks where children look at photos, listen to recordings or watch short videos
related to their questions.
·Bring in experts (专家) and plan field trips. Meeting experts and visiting places outside the classroom are
great ways to learn. Before a visit, have children think of questions to ask. During the visit, support their curiosity,
and afterward, discuss what they learned. ____18____.
·Allow children to lead their own learning. Adults often follow their own interests, so we should let children
do the same.____19____. One way is to create a “Wonder Wall”, where children can write or tell you their
questions. Set aside time during the day to review these questions. This shows that their ideas matter.
·Encourage group work. ____20____. When children work on the same topic or goal, learning together is
more enjoyable and effective (有效的). Teachers can help by allowing time for small group work while others are
working on independent tasks.
A. Why does it matter to them
B. Try different ways to explore ideas

At Piedmont Middle School, kids loved to play soccer. Laura had dreamed of playing for the school team
since first grade. Her cousin Mike had scored the winning goal in the county middle school championship, which
inspired Laura. So, when she finally joined the team in sixth grade, she was over the moon.
However, Laura’s excitement was short-lived. It all went wrong in her very first game. Laura passed the ball
in the wrong direction, straight to a player in blue from the other team. That player quickly shot it into the net and
scored a goal. The coach made her sit on the bench (替补席) for the rest of the season. Heartbroken, Laura figured
she wasn’t good enough to play soccer.
At the start of the summer holiday, Laura felt at a loss and wanted nothing more than to erase soccer from her
memory. A few days later, Laura’s mom found her lying on the sofa, watching music videos on her phone. “You
should practice instead,” her mom said.
“What’s the point ” Laura asked. “How can I improve my skills alone ”
Her mother continued, “For every problem, there’s a solution. Let me film you during practice so you can see
how to get better.”
Laura didn’t think it would help, especially since the season was over, and there were no official practice
sessions. But her mom was undeterred (不气馁的). “The best players practice even when the season’s over,” her
mom said. She reminded Laura of how Mike had spent countless hours practicing in the school field during the
summer vacation, running miles under the hot sun to perfect his skills.

Friendship
What makes a real friend Good friends should possess qualities like honesty and kindness. They should be
reliable and supportive, standing by you through thick and thin. Moreover, a sense of humor is also important as it
can lighten the mood and make the friendship more enjoyable.
When it comes to finding good friends, being proactive is key. Firstly, joining clubs that interest you can help
you meet like-minded people. Secondly, making an effort to communicate openly with others helps build trust and
understanding.
True friendship is a treasure that needs to be nurtured with care and sincerity.

Laura practiced passing and receiving the ball, while her mom filmed the sessions. They spent hours on the field,
working on different drills and plays. Laura began to see the value in practicing even when there were no official
