For almost eight years, Leah Mackenzie and her husband Kyle have lived on the sea. They travel around the
world on a 45-year-old sailboat, hoping to stay away from the pressure of modern life and live freely.
The couple, now in their mid-thirties, began their journey eight years ago and never looked back. Recently,
their unusual lifestyle became popular online after Leah shared photos of their trips. The pictures showed their
sailboat in Canada, French Polynesia, Alaska, and islands in the South Pacific. She wrote, “Does this count as a
wild home My partner and our three pets have lived aboard this 45-year-old sailboat for eight years traveling full
time around the world. The ocean is our backyard.”
Before setting sail, the couple had worked in Canada and they had never sailed. Leah said that sailing sounded
like a dream for them. After that first sail with a small boat through the Gulf Islands, they were addicted at once.
Soon, they upgraded to a larger boat called Jubel, and spent two years fixing, saving, and preparing for a life at sea.
Over the years, they have sailed more than 30,000 nautical miles, crossed the Panama Canal twice, and spent a year
exploring the South Pacific. Their next destinations include Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and Japan.
Still, life at sea is not always easy. Leah admitted, “This lifestyle has the highest highs and the lowest lows.”
She detailed some of harrowing experiences at sea, such as losing control of the boat during a storm with lightning
flashing around them.
The couple has visited 23 countries and Leah says the cultural exchanges and remote(偏远的) destinations are
meaningful. Although she admits to missing family and friends, Leah said the experiences have been worthwhile.
“Yes, they are dangerous, but so is living in a city in some ways. We plan to keep doing this until it’s no longer fun,”
she said.
1. Why does the couple travel around the world on a 45-year-old sailboat
A. To lead a modern life. B. To save money for their family.

2. What do we know about the couple from paragraph 3
A. They failed to explore the South Pacific.
B. They felt pleased with the first sail through the Gulf Islands.
第 2页/共 15页
C. They had rich sailing experience before sailing.
D. They have sailed to Indonesia twice so far.
3. What does the underlined word “harrowing” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Comforting. B. Moving. C. Amazing. D. Frightening.

Researchers have studied changes to mealtimes in older adults. They discovered people experience gradual
shifts (改变) as they age, and these changes may show important information about their health.
Lead researcher Hassan Dashti explained that changes in when people eat, especially breakfast, can be a
simple sign of overall health. He suggested that doctors and patients should use changes in mealtime routines as
early warnings of hidden physical or mental problems. He also noted that keeping a regular (有规律的) eating
schedule may support healthy aging and longer life.
To explore this idea, the team studied 2,945 adults in the UK, aged 42 to 94, who were followed for more than
20 years. They collected health data and blood samples (样本) to see how the mealtime might relate to health
problems. They found that as older adults age, they tend to eat breakfast and dinner at later times, while also
narrowing the overall time window in which they eat each day.
Later breakfast times were strongly related to health problems such as extreme sadness, low energy, poor sleep,
and trouble preparing meals. People who ate later were also more likely to have oral health problems. Most
importantly, later breakfast was connected with a higher risk of death. The researchers also found that people who
were naturally “night owls” (preferring later sleep and wake times) tended to eat meals at later times.
“Up until now, we have had a limited (有限的) insight into how the mealtime develops later in life and how
this change relates to overall health and longevity,” said Dashti. “Our findings help fill that gap by showing that
later mealtimes, especially a later breakfast, are tied to both health challenges and increased death risk in older
adults. These results add new meaning to the saying that ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’,
especially for older adults.”
4. What did Dashti suggest about mealtime changes
A. They usually have no clear reasons. B. They depend mainly on sleeping habits.
C. They can show signs of a person’s health. D. They are common among young people.
5. What did the researchers find about older adults
A. They have more food each day. B. They miss breakfast more often.
C. They take longer time over meals. D. They eat meals later during the day.
第 3页/共 15页
6. What can be inferred about people who eat breakfast late
A. They tend to live longer lives. B. They usually feel more energetic.
C. They are less likely to stay up. D. They may face certain health risks.
C
Students who plan to use AI (人工智能) tools to write their college admission essays (文章) should think
twice: Essays written by AI sound very similar to each other and lack personal voice, even when details (细节) like
race or gender are included.
Researchers from the Cornell University compared 30,000 college application essays written by humans to
ones written by eight AI tools. They discovered that AI essays were easy to tell from actual human writing because
they used similar sentence patterns and repeated the same kinds of ideas.
“The admission essay is a chance for applicants to offer insights into who they are, beyond all the structured
information on the application form,” said Rene Kizilcec, senior author of the new study. “AI tools can help
students improve their writing and are likely a good idea for weak writers. But asking for a full article will result in
something that just does not sound like any real applicant.”
The researchers explained that AI models cannot easily copy a person’s natural writing style. This makes them
undependable for important writing tasks like college applications. When AI tools were asked to write from the
view of a specific person, such as “an Asian woman from California”, the results sounded even less human. The
essays often listed personal details in a flat and predictable way. Surprisingly, the team found that another AI
program could easily tell the difference between human and AI-written essays. This means universities and
colleges could likely find out essays written mainly by AI tools.
First author Jinsook Lee advises high school students to use their own ideas to brainstorm and write some
simple essays, and, if allowed, use AI only to polish (润色) their essays. Applying to college can be stressful, but
Lee remembers her own article-writing positively. “It was a great chance to look back on my life and my
background,” she said. “I think it was the first experience for me to be really thoughtful.”
7. What is a problem about AI-written essays
A. They are short of a personal touch. B. They are always off-topic.
C. They use many difficult words. D. They hardly describe an event in detail.
8. What does the paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the study
A. Its use. B. Its findings. C. Its researchers. D. Its background.
9. What does Lee advise high school students to do
第 4页/共 15页
A. Use AI tools to improve their writing. B. Turn to AI models for help anytime.
C. Depend on AI models to write essays. D. Avoid using AI tools for any writing.
10. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. Can AI Influence Students in College Writing

My favorite way to exercise
My favorite way to exercise is playing basketball. I’ve been playing it since I was a kid, and it has become part
of my life. I usually play basketball with my friends after class. We have a lot of fun together.
I choose basketball for several reasons. First, it’s a great way to keep fit. It helps me build strength and
endurance. Second, it’s a team sport, which teaches me how to work with others and be a good teammate. Last but
not least, every game is a new challenge, and I love the feeling of scoring a basket or making a great pass.
To conclude, basketball not only makes me healthy but also brings me joy and friendship. Therefore, among
all the sports, I like playing basketball most.
