Over the past three years, Kang Jian has created more than 400 dough sculptures (面 塑 ) and become a
city-level inheritor (传承人) of this intangible cultural heritage in Mohe, Heilongjiang Province.
“When I was a little boy, every time my parents made dumplings, they would give me a small piece of dough,”
he said. “I tried to make various animals — a rabbit, a fish, or a snail. The small, simple objects brought me lots of
good childhood memories and planted the seeds of fine art, especially sculpture, in my heart.” Kang’s parents were
not financially able to support his desire to study fine arts while he was at school. But he didn’t give up. He spent
his spare time after school studying drawing by himself.
第 2页/共 10页
Then, in December 2018, during a visit to a museum in Beijing, Kang, for the first time, got information about
the intangible cultural heritage of dough sculpting, which attracted him greatly. “I was really excited to learn about
dough sculpting.” he said. “Then I had the idea of taking my childhood interest up again.” He then spent 20 days
learning skills from Bai Chunyu, a provincial-level inheritor of dough sculpting. And in August 2019, he got the
chance to learn from another national-level inheritor.
Kang spent nearly all his spare time practicing, hoping to improve quickly. “To learn as much as possible
during my 40 days there, I practiced every day from 6 am until late at night,” he said. “When I slept, I had to put
my hands in hot water to relieve the pain. But all the efforts turned out to be worth it.”
In April, Kang completed the dough sculptures of 108 characters from the novel Outlaws of the Marsh after 16
months of work. “Most of my dough sculptures are traditional Chinese characters. In my mind, the real value of my
dough sculpture as a national intangible cultural heritage lies in its connection with traditional Chinese culture. That’
s the charm and significance of the art,” he said.
4. What inspired Kang to have the dream of dough sculpting
A. His talent for drawing.
B. His admiration for Bai’s skills.
C. His parents’ encouragement and support.
D. His childhood experiences with dough.

A. He sought guidance from masters.
B. He paid frequent visits to museums.
C. He got formal training at an art school.
D. He sought help from many sculpting lovers.

Knowing how to read, write and talk in one language is enough for many people. They prefer to focus their
energy on other things that improve their lives. Scientists, however, continue to confirm that bilingualism, the
ability to speak two languages fluently, has more benefits than many realize.
First, it’s good for a child’s brain. Learning a second language improves their academic achievements. Many
studies have shown that children who learn a foreign language get better grades at school. Bilingual children also
display a better facility in their native language. Their grammar, vocabulary and spelling skills are stronger than
those of single-language speakers. Children who learn a second language become expert problem-solvers and
creative thinkers. That’s because their brains are constantly working to sort out which language to speak and when.
Studies further show that bilingual teens are better at multitasking.
Multilingual parents understand the benefits of learning more than one language. Ben Mazor of Montreal
speaks English, French and Hebrew. He says, “Kids’ brains are like a sponge (海绵). They absorb everything. It
comes to them so easily while they’re young. So why not give them the chance to learn another language ”
A number of studies show that bilingualism is valuable to the brain later in life. Scottish researchers did a
study using data from 835 native English speakers, who took an IQ test at the age of 11. They were tested again in
their 70s. Researchers then compared the tests. Those who spoke two or more languages had obviously better
cognitive (认知的) abilities. Dr. Thomas Baka, co-author of the study, concluded, “Our results suggest a protective
effect of bilingualism against age-related cognitive decline.”
So,who would refuse the benefits of learning a second language
8. What does the underlined word “facility” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Ability. B. Interest. C. Taste. D. Method.
9. According to paragraph 3, what may parents like Ben Mazor do
A. Learn foreign languages by themselves.
B. Spend more money on home schooling.
C. Involve kids in foreign language courses.
D. Help kids absorb knowledge like a sponge.
10. What has the Scottish researchers proved about bilingualism
A. It extends one’s life. B. It improves test scores.
C. It cures brain disorders. D. It slows mental ageing.

Bat habitats (栖息地) are damaged by human activities despite their contribution to our environment. To
ensure that we can study and improve the health of our bat population, we need to locate their habitats. But finding
their habitats seems like a tall order. They are small and fast and primarily fly at night.
Our new research combines our previous mathematical model of bat movement with data gathered from sound
recorders known as “bat detectors”. They are placed around the environment and left there for several nights.
Bats are able to “see with sound” when they’re flying. If the sounds are made within 10 to 15 meters of a bat
detector, the device is started to make a recording, providing a proper record of where and when a bat is present.
The sound recordings also provide information about the species of bat. Greater horseshoe bats make a very unique
call at exactly 82 kHz, so we can easily tell whether the species is present or not.
Our model can also be used to predict the frequency (预测频率) of bat calls based on a given habitat location.
So, we divided the environment into grids (网格). The squares whose recorders best collect the bat data will then be
the most likely locations of the habitats. This simple method can be applied to whole landforms.
Cutting out the regions that are least likely to have the habitats can mean we reduce the search space to less
than 1% of the firstly surveyed area, simplifying the process of finding bat habitats frees researchers to focus on
safeguarding these areas, rather than struggling to find them.
In 2022, we developed an app that uses publicly sourced data to predict bat flight lines. At the moment, the
app can help researchers, developers or local authority planners know how the environment is used by bats.
However, it needs the habitat location to be provided first, and this information is not always known. Our new
research removes this difficulty, making the app easier to use.
12. What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 1 imply about locating a bat habitat
A. It attracts a lot of interest. B. It is an extremely difficult task.
C. It has shown impressive progress. D. It often leads to unexpected discoveries.
13. Why is the greater horseshoe bat mentioned in the text
A. To prove the exactness of sound recognition. B. To introduce the species’ survival skills.
第 5页/共 10页
C. To explain bats’ movement in darkness. D. To discuss bats’ habitat preferences.
14. What effect does the grid-based method in the new model primarily achieve
A. It helps count bats in different areas. B. It controls the sound frequency of bat calls.
C. It reduces the influence of human activities. D. It enables proper judgment of possible habitats.
15. What limitation of the 2022 app does the new research deal with
A. Inability to tell apart bat species.
B. Difficulty in guiding bats’ flight.
C. Dependence on pre-known habitat details.
D. Unsuitability for certain environmental conditions.
