A family reunion dinner
After putting up couplets and pictures on the doors on New Year’s Eve, the last day of the twelfth month in the Chinese lunar calendar, each family gathers for a big meal called “family reunion dinner”. People will enjoy the food.
The meal is more luxurious (奢华) than usual. Dishes such as chicken, fish and bean curd are necessary. Xiao is one of the oldest musical instruments in China. It’s a kind of wind instrument. It has a long history. The music of the bamboo flute or Xiao reminds people of a lonely moon hanging in the sky of a cool autumn night. The sound of it is the sound of nature. The material is soft and elegant (典雅的).

There is a mouth on the top and five sound holes on the front side and one hole at the back. Besides, there are other holes that are made to adjust (调整) the tunes (曲调), smooth the tones, and raise the volume (音量). Xiao sounds soft and beautiful.
③________
The performance levels are closely the same as those of the flute, but less flexible (灵活的), For that reason, it is only suitable to play slow and peaceful melodies (旋律), which carry people’s feelings in this situation and draw a beautiful picture of nature. Production of the sleep hormone melatonin (褪黑激素) begins at dark. Research has found that the body will slow or even stop its production when lights are on, so try to stay away from any light, even the blue glow from your charging smartphone.Refuse the wine
Don’t turn to wine to make you calm or help you sleep. 19 Your body needs to experience all three steps of sleep—light sleep, dream, and deep sleep—to fully repair itself. 20
Heavy and spicy foods may give you heartburn or other digestive problems. Thus influencing your ability to get and stay asleep.

Early on, something was missing, and later would be found somewhere else. I just thought I had forgotten where I put it, or perhaps my daughter was playing around with things. Then later on I would hear strange sounds when nobody was at home but me...Yet it was an old house, and sometimes old houses did make small noises. So again, I didn’t really mind.
Then things that I couldn’t explain started happening. It was last November and I was at home alone cleaning the house. When I was sweeping the kitchen floor, I felt a very cold wind blow my hair. I thought the kitchen window must have been opened, but when I checked it, it was closed. The windows were new, and there was no way any cold air came in.

1.主旨大意题。根据第三段中“The custom of pasting couplets on the doors has a long history.” “to drive away the evil things” 以及“express wishes for happiness and good fortune”可知,本段主要介绍对联的历史以及它的作用。故选B。
2.词句猜测题。根据画线词所在句中“people like to stick the Chinese character ‘Happiness’ upside down on doors or walls”可知,人们喜欢把“福”字倒贴在门上以及墙上,倒贴福字即为“福倒了”。汉字“倒”与“到”是同音词。故选D。

Dear Tom,
How are you I’ve made some Chinese knots by hand recently. I know you have an online store, so I wonder if you could help me sell them.
Chinese knots are made of red thread with beautiful patterns. In Chinese culture, they symbolize good luck and happiness. Many people like to hang them at home or give them as gifts.
I think your customers may find them special and meaningful. Would you like to give it a try I really hope you can help me.
Yours,
Li Hua
