Plants Can “Talk” to Each Other
Scientists find that plants can “talk” to each other through sounds. When a plant is thirsty, hungry, or hurt, it makes very small click-click (咔哒咔哒) sounds. Humans can’t hear these sounds without special equipment, but animals with good hearing, like bats and mice, can catch them. The clicks may tell nearby (附近的) plants something, just like friends telling secrets on the playground.
Scientists use special (特殊的) microphones (麦克风) to record (录制) tomato plants in a lab. When the plants don’t have enough water or their leaves are cut, they start to click more often. The scientists think plants use these sounds to tell other plants nearby about danger (危险).
However, some scientists still have questions. They say, “We need more research.” They are not sure if the plants truly want to “talk”. Maybe the sounds are just from the plants drying out or getting damaged. It could be like a cup that makes a sound when it breaks, not like a person who really wants to speak.
A team of scientists at Tel Aviv University in Israel has carried out this study. They hope their findings will help farmers in the future. If farmers can hear the plants’ clicks, they may know quickly when plants need water or care. In this way, tomatoes, wheat, and corn can grow strong, and our dinner tables will be full of more healthy food.
