Growing up in rural Jiangsu Province, Yu Jigao showed a strong interest in fine arts at an early age and studied
on his own for years. His hard work paid off later. In the early 1950s, he made his way to Nanjing Normal
University, where he learned painting theories and techniques from some famous artists. It was then that Yu found
his lifelong artistic zeal for gongbi. Gongbi paintings usually describe birds and flowers, symbols of beauty and joy,
in an artistic way with intense color.
After graduation from the art school in 1957, Yu began his professional career at the Chinese Painting Institute
of Jiangsu. He has since published a series of art collections. Since 1959, Yu has contributed a series of works to
many important sites. Yu’s works have also been displayed in a range of national and international exhibitions.
From 1986 to 1997, he held his exhibitions in such places as Beijing, Guangzhou and New York. Both the themes
and artistic techniques have won widespread praise in the past years.
While observing traditional rules, he uses accurate lines, powerful brush movements as well as the interplay
between dark and light to represent the harmony of nature. Though he adopts a realistic style, he tries to enrich his
works with spiritual beauty through his brush. Yu says, “That feeling turns into the images of singing birds and
elegant flowers in my paintings.” Thanks to his careful observation of nature and artistic sensitivity, Yu is able to
combine realistic description with artistic expression in his brushwork.
Now as deputy director of the Academy of Chinese Gongbi Painting of Flowers and Birds and a national
top-level artist, Yu maintains a simple and easy-going style. In addition to artistic creation, Yu has devoted himself
to promoting his painting style as the cultural heritage of China. “Art is part of my life,” Yu says. “I am proud to be
a flower-bird painter. I hope to create a bright future for it through my efforts.”
4. What does the underlined word “zeal” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Request. B. Passion. C. Tension D. Symbol

A. His school life. B. His painting techniques.
C. His achievements in painting. D. His contributions to the art school.
6. Which is Yu’s painting feature
A. Adopting abstract objects. B. Ignoring plants and animals.
C. Combining traditional rules with a realistic style. D. Representing the imbalance between nature and
humans.
7. What does Yu expect of his painting style

In the spring, the western tanagers (唐纳雀 ) prepared to migrate thousands of miles to the forests of the
Mountain West, flying through grasslands, deserts, and occasionally, suburban yards.
To fuel them on their lengthy journey, western tanagers feed on insects and berries. They must take advantage
of the early-season boom in insects that started with springtime plant growth to produce healthy young. But as
global climate change caused spring to start earlier, birds such as western tanagers were arriving at their destination
after what was known as “green-up”, when flowers began blooming and insects popped up. With the shift of the
time when plants put out new leaves, western tanagers became more likely to reach their destinations when food is
in shortage or after insect numbers have begun to drop.
Scott Loss, a professor at Oklahoma State University and his colleagues used satellite imagery to calculate the
average start of spring green-up along the typical migration routes of 150 North American bird species, and then
compared that timing with the current green-up. They found that spring was indeed beginning earlier along birds’
migration routes. The trend continued this year.
The paper continued to build this picture of the inability of birds to track the changing seasons caused by
climate change. Timing mismatches between birds and their food could affect whether birds survived the migration
and how many chickens they had.
Morgan Tingley, a researcher at UCLA said that the migration research could indicate conservation efforts in
the future. “Part of it suggested which species were vulnerable (易受伤害的) to various threats,” Tingley said.
“This added to the knowledge about vulnerability of a wide range of bird species.” And he hoped that the
information would serve to highlight the urgent need to lower greenhouse-gas emissions as fast as possible: “It was
really important, if we couldn’t address climate change immediately, to try to stop habitat loss as much as we can.”
8. During the migration, what will happen to the western tanagers after “green-up”
A. They will struggle to find enough insects and berries.
B. They will have difficulty finding suitable nesting sites.
C. They will hardly find blooming flowers for reproduction.
D. They will find it hard to survive worse weather conditions.
9. What is the direct result of the timing mismatch between birds and their food
A. The loss of birds’ habitats. B. The decrease of birds’ survival rate.
第 6页/共 17页
C. The contribution to the greenhouse effect D. The increase of difficulty in biodiversity conservation.
10. What is Morgan Tingley’s attitude towards the research findings in the last paragraph
A. Uncertain. B. Critical. C. Concerned. D. Doubtful
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. The Diverse Patterns of Bird migration
B. The timing Mismatch of Western Tanagers
C. The Impact of Climate Change on Migratory Birds
D. The Vulnerability of Bird Species to Various Threats

When watching sports events, we often notice athletes with their earphones on while preparing in the locker
room or entering the stadium. They keep their eyes shut, and gently nod along the beats. It seems as if the music is
empowering them and toughening them up for the competition. But is there any science behind such practice
According to a recent research, it turns out there is. Music actually does make us feel powerful, but not all
songs have the same effect. The research was led by Dennis Hsu of the Kellogg School of Management at
Northwestern University in the US. His team had people listen to 31 songs of different types. The listeners felt
powerful after listening to some songs, such as Queen’s We Will Rock You and 2 Unlimited’s Get Ready for This.
Researchers also found that high-power music made people want to take control in social events and come first in
competition. As for the reason for music’s magical power, Hsu’s team came up with one possible explanation:
When people hear music that expresses a sense of power, they mimic these feelings in their mind.
So, when choosing music, we need to look at the type of music. In previous research by the Music in Exercise
and Sport Group at Brunel University in London, they found that pop was perfect for slower, more repetitive-type
tasks. Dance music was found to be best suited to strength and weight training because it’s “fast and rhythmical”.
During high-intensity workouts, though, you’d better not listen to rock. Its different changes in tempo can affect
your rhythm.
12 Why athletes were mentioned in the first paragraph
A. To list things athletes have in common with other people.
B. To describe athletes’ common habits before sports games.
C. To get readers to wonder whether music matters in sports.
D. To explain why athletes like listening to music before games.
第 7页/共 17页
13. Which of the following statements might Dennis Hsu agree with
A. Listening to music can always boost the athlete’s performance.
B. People listening to powerful music are likely to produce similar feelings.
C. The result of a game is mainly affected by the physical condition of the players.
D. Most athletes don’t know the effects of high-power music on their performance.
14. If you want to cool down after exercise, what kind of music will be suitable
A. Pop music. B. Dance music. C. Rock. D. Blues.
15. How did the author make his points clear
A. With comparisons. B. Through examples.
C. By giving general rules. D. Through listing figures.

The simple typewriter was once the unquestioned king of every office around the world.
Its story began in Milwaukee in the 1860s, where inventor Christopher Latham Sholes, with the help of his
partners, finally created a machine that would change writing forever: the Sholes and Glidden typewriter, which
had the now-worldwide QWERTY keyboard. This keyboard design was made to stop mechanical jams by slowing
typists down — a smart solution to a technical problem. ____16____ It brought new job chances, especially for
women, who started to join the workforce as secretaries in large numbers.
For nearly a century, the typewriter was the core of business, journalism and government. Offices rang with
the steady tap-tap of keys, and carbon paper was used to make copies. However, in the 1970s and 1980s, the digital
revolution took place. ____17____
The arrival of personal computers and word processing software like WordPerfect and Microsoft Word
changed how people created documents. ____18____ By the mid-1990s, computers had taken the place of
typewriters in almost every workplace, making them out of date and leading famous brands like IBM and
Underwood to decline.
____19____ Some writers, collectors and artists have held onto them, enjoying the feel of typing, the
satisfying click when the carriage returns (回车换行), and the environment that helps people stay focused — all
provided by these machines. ____20____ Young people, in particular, are finding their appeal again, and old-style
typewriters have become sought-after things on online auction (拍卖) sites. Though it’s no longer used as a tool in
modern businesses, the typewriter still exists as a powerful symbol of a communication era.
第 8页/共 17页
A. Yet, the typewriter never truly went away.
B. Typewriters are still in use in some fields.
C. It started the end of the typewriter’s dominance.
D. Many people love both typewriters and computers.
E. Editing became easy, and there were endless ways to format text.
F. In the years that followed, typing became a highly valued special skill.
G. Nowadays, more and more people have started to pay attention to typewriters.

As a shy student in high school, I’d always been afraid of speaking English in public. Countless times, I had
practiced perfect English conversations in my mind, but when it came to the real thing, I would freeze and couldn’t
say anything. What if I messed up the grammar What if my native language accent sounded too strong My hands
would get sweaty, and my voice would tremble (颤抖) whenever my teacher called my name in class. I envied my
classmates who could chat fluently with native speakers, but I felt trapped by my own self-doubt.
One sunny afternoon, I was looking through books in a local bookstore. Golden sunlight streamed through the
bookstore’s large windows, casting warm light over the rows of bookshelves. It was quiet with not many customers.
The soft low sound of customers turning through pages and the slight smell of freshly printed paper filled the air.
While searching for an illustrated book in front of the bookshelf, I heard a tense conversation at the checkout
counter. A foreign customer stood there, holding a piece of paper covered in messy Chinese handwriting. He
gestured wildly, trying to explain something to the shopkeeper, who stared back in total confusion, with a polite yet
helpless smile on her face. The customer’s face turned red with annoyance, while the shopkeeper just shook her
head, clearly lost.
My heart raced as I realized they were speaking English. Every part of me wanted to run, but my feet felt

Knowing that you would like to know something about my trip to Hainan Island on winter vacation, I can’t
wait to share with you my travel plan.
We are leaving for Hainan Island, the second largest island in China, by air on Jan 23rd, where we plan to
stay six days. In the first place, we are scheduled to wander the beaches in Sanya. It’s said that visitors are sure
to be impressed by its beauty and charm. On top of that, the second day will be spent in sunbathing and
swimming, which is recognized as a must for tourists. Last but not least, we are looking forward to enjoying the
sunrise and sunset, which is well worth a try.
In short, it’s hoped that the enjoyable holiday is going to relax us and open our mind. I’m looking forward to
your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

After what felt like ages, I took a deep breath and approached them. My voice was barely above a whisper as I
asked, “Can I help ” The foreign customer turned to me, hope lighting up his face. He quickly handed me the paper,
explaining that he was trying to find a specific book but couldn’t make the shopkeeper understand the title. I
glanced at the messy handwriting, recognizing a few English words amidst the Chinese characters. With a shaky
hand, I pointed to the bookshelves and led him to the right section, my heart pounding in my chest.
When the shopkeeper finally found the right volume, the customer thanked me sincerely. His gratitude washed
over me like a warm wave, melting away my anxiety. As he left the store, he patted my shoulder and said, “Your
English is great! Don’t be afraid to speak it.” His words echoed in my mind long after he’d gone. That day, I
realized that my fear of making mistakes was holding me back from connecting with others. Stepping out of my
comfort zone had not only helped someone in need but also given me a newfound confidence in my ability to
communicate. From then on, I started raising my hand more often in class, embracing every chance to speak
English without fear.
