Kriger was 19 when doctors told him his recent nosebleed and the pain in his leg bones were from leukemia,a cancer he had never heard of.Hospitalized and bed-bound in Hamburg, his weight dropped from 176 pounds to 88.To try to lift his mother's spirits,Kriger smiled and often told jokes. But when it came to his illness,he fought like a lion.Still, the cancer wouldn't leave him.
A doctor told him his only remaining option was a stem cell transplant. His family members got tested.None matched. Two stem cell registration events were held near his hometown, attended by a total of about 3,000 people.Still,no luck. Then his doctor told him somebody had turned up in the United States who might be a match for him.
Tingle,54 years old,was well beyond what is often considered the prime age for stem cell donation. But she was informed just before Christmas that she appeared to be a match for someone else with leukemia in donating."There are not many opportunities in life to know that you have truly saved someone's life,"Tingle says. She called it one of the greatest privileges of her life. She had her blood tested and traveled to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville,Florida,to have a physical examination to ensure she was healthy enough. Each step of the way,she could have dropped out. However, luckily,Tingle turned out to be Kriger's nearly perfect stem cell match. So she had donated some and waited, praying for the stranger.
Then months later, the letter arrived"….Without you I wouldn't be alive anymore. It's an amazing feeling to know that there is someone on the other side of the world who I am connected to so deeply."Kriger and Tingle met for the first time in 2019.Kriger was amazed by the connections that brought him and Tingle together and intended to register in case his stem cells could help save someone else.

Everyone knows walking is good for you,and many of us count our daily steps. But is it better to take a longer walk than a comparable number of steps spread across the day?A recent multinational study reveals that walking in longer continuous sessions provides greater health benefits than accumulating the same number of steps through short bursts throughout the day.
Researchers analyzed data from 33,560 British adults aged 40-79 who averaged less than 8,000 daily steps.Participants were asked to wear an accelerometer for about seven days to establish how much they typically walk.Participants were sorted into four categories according to whether they accumulated most of their steps:under 5 minutes,5-10 minutes,10-15 minutes,or over 15 minutes.Scientists found that those who mainly walked in more than 15 minute sessions showed an 83% lower mortality(死亡) risk and 68% lower cardiovascular(心血管的)disease risk compared to those taking less than 5 minutes' walks.
"We tend to place all the emphasis on the number of steps or the total amount of walking but neglect the crucial role of patterns,"said Emmanuel Stamatakis, one of the researchers, who is director of the University of Sydney's Mackenzie Wearables Research Hub in Sydney,Australia."The study shows that even people who are very physically inactive can maximize their heart health benefit by tweaking their walking patterns to walk for longer at a time, ideally for at least 10-15 minutes."
But the researchers took steps to determine whether better health caused the longer walks rather than vice versa. For instance, they analyzed their findings without including volunteers who were reported fair or poor health, yet results were still"in line with those of our main analyses."
Aiden Doherty,a professor at the University of Oxford said the study was conducted"by some of the world's leading physical activity researchers"and introduced a brand new concept, but "the results need to be reproduced in other studies in other countries to see if this might be due to a direct causal relationship rather than a simple connection between factors."
8.How did the researchers categorize the participants in the study?______
A. By their age groups and national backgrounds.
B. By the condition of their cardiovascular health.
C. By the total number of steps they took within a day.
D. By the length of their continuous walking sessions.
9.The underlined word"tweaking" in paragraph 3 most probably means ______ .
A. replacing completely B. adjusting slightly
C. criticizing severely D. measuring accurately
10.What is Professor Doherty's attitude toward the findings?______
A. Favorable B. Cautious C. Disapproving D. Indifferent
11.Which is the best title for the passage?______
A. Walking More Steps Leads to Better Health.
B. Older Adults Should Prioritize More Walking.
C. Walking Patterns Significantly Affect Longevity.
D. Walking Style Matters More Than Step Count.

It's a traditional belief that the human brain's two hemispheres(半球)indicate distinct personality characteristics:creative souls are said to rely on a dominant right hemisphere, while analytical thinkers lean heavily on the left. But modern brain research is challenging this long-held myth, revealing a far more integrated picture of brain function.
The idea of"left-brained"or"right-brained" individuals gained popularity in pop psychology, yet experimental evidence to support this binary split(二元化分) has remained rare.To settle the debate,a research team at the University of Utah carried out a comprehensive study, dividing the brain into over 7,000 functional regions and analyzing functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI) scans of 1,011 participants.Their goal was to measure whether neural(神经的) networks on one side of the brain were naturally stronger or more active than those on the other.
Published in the peer-reviewed journal PLOSONE,the findings strongly challenged the myth of hemisphere dominance. The researchers detected no significant differences in the strength or activity levels of neural networks across the two hemispheres.Instead, they found that the brain operates like an interconnected network of computers:local neurons, which communicate more efficiently than distant ones, form organized "centers"to handle specific tasks. This localization minimizes the need for cross-hemisphere signal sending, boosting overall efficiency.
These functional hubs tend to gather on the same side of the brain when their roles are related.A classic example is language processing:in approximately 90% of people, the brain regions responsible for speech production, reasoning, and comprehension are concentrated in the left hemisphere. This asymmetry(不对称),however, does not equal to dominance—it merely reflects functional specialization.
The study confirms that while certain brain areas exhibit structural or functional asymmetry, both hemispheres are used relatively equally in daily thinking and learning. This means the potential for both analytical and creative excellence exists in every individual. After all, history's greatest minds-Leonardo da Vinci,a towering figure in both art and science—illustrate the brain's remarkable ability to integrate diverse talents.
12.What was the core finding of the University of Utah study?______
A. Brain hemispheres have relatively equal activity levels.
B. Left-brain dominance is the key to language development.
C. Creative thinking is controlled by the right hemisphere.
D. fMRI scans are reliable and necessary for brain studies.
13.Which statement is TRUE according to the new findings?______
A. The left brain dominates analytical thinking.
B. Not everyone's speech regions are left-located.
C. Language hubs spread across both hemispheres.
D. Traditional hemisphere theory has solid support.
14.Why does the author mention Leonardo da Vinci?______
A. To stress the size of the study's sample.
B. To criticize outdated theories on the brain.
C. To show creativity and analysis could combine.
D. To compare ancient and modern scientists' work.
15.What is the text mainly about?______
A. The description of brain functional specialization.
B. The analysis of factors influencing brain asymmetry.
C. The Introduction of fMRI-based brain research method.
D. The rejection of the brain hemisphere dominance myth.

Tony and I have been married for over 30 years.Dogs have enriched our marriage for these years. Our last dog,Chance, was no doubt special and usually very laid-back(闲散的).He was a quite clever dog.He was a mix of two types of dogs:Labrador and Golden Retriever. His favorite things to do were taking a walk with us,and running after other animals, including cats, rabbits and deer.Every day,Chance and I would take a one-mile walk. And Tony would go with us together.
After I had an operation in 2000,walking was the best form to help me recover.Chance was a good motivator since we didn't miss a day of exercise.Plus he was a gentle guy while on the leash(皮带) regardless of weighing a hundred pounds.
After cleaning up the kitchen one afternoon,I pulled on my tennis shoes and took Chance's leash.I didn't have to say a word because he had already run to the door.Tony was in the living room sitting in his favorite chair with the new computer on his lap.The computer had been bought online and was just delivered to our home one hour before. Now Tony was excitedly checking it.
In view of this,I asked my husband,"Are you going with us today?""Sorry, perhaps not this time,"Tony apologized."I want to further explore the new computer."I stood in the doorway with the leash still in my hand, replying,"All right."But Chance was seemingly unhappy and would not allow it.
He found that my husband appeared to hesitate to go out with us this time. And the look on Chance's face was like,"Huh?"Immediately,he went into the living room, stood in front of Tony and barked at him loudly, urging him to stand up and go with him."Sorry,boy.Not this time,"my husband said, smiling at him and still sitting comfortably in his chair.

37.【答案】Dear teachers and fellow students,
I'm Li Hua.Last spring,I went camping by a quiet lake with my friends.
We saw water birds skimming the waves and wild flowers blooming everywhere. At dusk,we watched the sunset paint the sky orange and pink.
This trip let me escape study pressure and feel nature's magic. It taught me that getting close to nature can fill our life with joy and peace.Let's embrace nature and live a richer life!
38.【答案】 But Chance didn't buy it.He stared at Tony with those big, warm eyes, his tail thumping softly on the floor as if pleading. When Tony still didn't move,Chance upped his game—he nuzzled Tony's hand with his wet nose, then gently grabbed the hem of Tony's pants with his teeth and pulled lightly. He didn't tug hard, just enough to get attention, his bark softening into a low whine.I stood by the door, amused, watching my hundred-pound dog act like a stubborn child.Tony tried to brush him off,but Chance refused to back down, circling Tony's chair and stopping every few steps to bark again,as if reminding him of their daily ritual.
"Okay, boy, you win!"my husband sighed. He closed the laptop with a chuckle, stood up,and grabbed his jacket from the coat rack.Chance's tail wagged wildly, hitting the chair legs with a rapid thud.As soon as Tony took the leash from my hand,Chance pulled him toward the door, his steps light with excitement. The walk that afternoon was as pleasant as always—Chance trotted beside us,occasionally pausing to sniff a flower or chase a butterfly.Tony later admitted that stepping away from the computer was exactly what he needed.Chance didn't just get us exercise that day;he reminded us that some of life's best moments are the ones shared with loved ones,four-legged or otherwise.
