Passage
On January 19, 2026, a great moment touched the hearts of Chinese people: the return capsule of Shenzhou-20 spacecraft landed safely at the Dongfeng Landing Site in the Gobi Desert at 9:34 a.m. Beijing time. It marked the end of its 270-day space journey, which was longer than the planned six months due to an unexpected collision with space debris.
Shenzhou-20 was launched on April 24, 2025, the 55th anniversary of China's first man-made satellite "Dongfanghong-1". About 10 minutes after launch, the spacecraft separated from the rocket and entered its predetermined orbit. Later that day, it successfully docked with the Tianhe core module of China's Space Station. During their stay in space, the three astronauts carried out a lot of important tasks. They set a new world record by heating tungsten alloy to 3100 degrees Celsius in a space material science experiment. In space life science research, they took care of zebrafish and a "space garden", and did high-quality protein crystal experiments—these crystals may help find new ways to treat tumors. The crew also completed four extravehicular activities (EVAs), becoming one of the Chinese astronaut teams that have done the most spacewalks.
However, the return journey faced a big challenge. In early November 2025, the crew found a triangular crack in the return capsule's porthole, which was believed to be caused by space debris. To ensure safety, the mission headquarters started an emergency plan immediately. The Shenzhou-20 astronauts returned to Earth safely on the Shenzhou-21 spacecraft later that month, and China launched the Shenzhou-22 spacecraft as an emergency backup—the first emergency launch in China's manned space history. After careful checks and preparations by the ground team, the Shenzhou-20 return capsule finally came back successfully on January 19.
This mission has great meaning. It successfully tested the spacecraft's ability to stay in orbit for 9 months, which is very important for the long-term operation of China's Space Station. It also showed China's strong emergency response ability in space exploration. As China's manned space program enters a new stage of application and development, such achievements will encourage more people to love science and pursue dreams of exploring the universe.

Key Words & Phrases (中考核心词汇)
English Expression Chinese Translation
land (v.)
spacecraft (n.) 宇宙飞船 可数名词,复数形式:spacecraft(不变形)
journey (n.) 旅程;行程 写作常用词,搭配:a long space journey
collision (n.)
launch (v./n.)
separate (v.)
dock (v.)
experiment (n./v.) 实验;做实验 核心词汇,形容词:experimental(阅读常考)
challenge (n.)
emergency (adj./n.)
ensure (v.)

exploration (n.)
Answer: B
解析:根据文章第一段首句“On January 19, 2026... the return capsule of Shenzhou-20 spacecraft landed safely at the Dongfeng Landing Site”,可知神舟二十号返回舱于2026年1月19日安全着陆。
Answer: B
解析:由第一段第二句“which was longer than the planned six months due to an unexpected collision with space debris”可知,任务延期的原因是飞船与意外太空碎片发生碰撞。
Answer: D
Answer: A
解析:结合上下文“the spacecraft separated from the rocket and entered its predetermined orbit”(飞船与火箭分离后进入预定轨道),可知“predetermined”表示“预定的”。B(危险的)、C(临时的)、D(遥远的)均与航天任务的计划性矛盾。
Answer: C
解析:文章最后一段提到“it successfully tested the spacecraft's ability to stay in orbit for 9 months”和“showed China's strong emergency response ability in space exploration”,核心结论是中国具备强大的太空探索能力和应急响应能力。
