In ancient China, willow branches(柳枝) were often used as a parting gift between friends and family members.Do you know why they are a symbol of farewell(告别)
One reason is that willow trees are strong. They can survive(生存) in any soil, wet or dry, north or south.
Because of this unique feature, giving a willow branch is a way to say goodbye to loved ones. And it tells them you hope they will easily adapt to their new living environment.
Meanwhile,in Mandarin(普通话),the pronunciation of “liu” for “willow” is similar to the Chinese character “留”,which means asking someone to stay— only the tones(声调) are different. So,offering a willow branch is like asking the other one to stay, even though we know that he or she must leave.
It's said that this custom became popular during the Han Dynasty(202 BC—220 AD).At that time the Ba Bridge in Chang'an,today's Xi'an,was a common place to say goodbye.People often stopped there and gave willow branches to the people who would leave.
Willow branches are often mentioned in poems. In The Book of Songs(《诗经》),there is the line “When I left there, willows shed tears.” During the Tang and Song dynasties, such poems were common as travelling was easy and poets often felt the pain of separation(离别).For example,Wang Wei wrote “The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green,” in his famous poem A Farewell Song(《送元二使安西》).
