Biologist E.O.Wilson once wrote that "ants are the most warlike of all animals",noting that fight between ants colonies (群体) exceeded the human battles at Waterloo and Gettysburg. But sometimes ant colonies get defeated not by direct fighting, but by secrets and tricks. And the members of an ant colony can get tricked into murdering their own precious queen.
"Simply taking over another colony is very efficient," agrees Keizo Takasuka,an ecologist. He explains that scientists have observed female ants entering a foreign colony and directly choking or cutting off the head of the queen. But Takasuka recently observed a couple of ant species in the lab. They learned that female ants from these species can use a far more dishonest method of getting rid of a colony's queen and stealing her crown.
First, the female ant needs some disguise (伪装) to enter the targeted colony without being detected as an outsider.Since ants mainly tell friend from enemy using chemical signals, the female ant can pick up the necessary smell by coming into contact with a few of the colony's workers.Takasuka's group gave the female the opportunity to do this in the lab.
Then the scientists watched as a disguised female was making her way through a colony towards its queen.Once she reached the queen, the foreign ant sprayed (喷) fluid to cover the queen in some kind of chemical, and withdrew some time later. "It might be formic acid," says Takasuka. "That's used by some ants for defense,or to signal danger.Whatever it was, spraying this chemical onto the queen had a dramatic effect." Crowds of workers who had been lovingly obeying their queen, ready to lay down their lives to protect her, suddenly turned on her, attacking her violently until she was dead.
In their report, the researchers call this the first documented case of a parasite (寄生) that "makes the young kill an otherwise necessary mother".After the killing of the mother, the colony's ants accepted the invading female as their new queen and began to serve her, protecting her and helping to raise her children.
8.What does the first paragraph intend to say?______
A. Ants are the most warlike animals.
B. Some ants attack foreign queens directly.
C. Ant battles are larger than some human battles.
D. Ant workers can be cheated into killing their queen.
9.What does the underlined word "this" in paragraph 3 refer to?______
A. Stealing the queen's position.
B. Picking up the necessary smell.
C. Interacting with foreign workers.
D. Getting rid of the colony's queen.
10.What happened right after the ant sprayed the queen?______
A. The foreign ant withdrew immediately.
B. Workers accepted the foreign ant as a queen.
C. Workers turned against their own queen.
D. The sprayed fluid killed the queen directly.
11.What does the term "parasite" imply about the foreign ant?______
A. It tricks the colony into raising her young.
B. It serves the colony peacefully.
C. It waits for the workers' reaction.
D. It feeds on the host colony.

In the digital era, where social media floods with ceaseless oversharing,26-year-old illustrator Lina from Hangzhou stands as a striking example. She regularly posts artworks and travel snapshots on Instagram but seldom replies to comments or engages in private conversations."I love sharing fragments(碎片) of my life, yet building deep connections with strangers feels emotionally exhausting",she admits.Lina's attitude represents a growing trend among today's youth:light socializing,a pattern that prioritizes self-expression over intensive emotional bonds in the virtual world.
Sociologist Min Li observes that social media, once a hub(中心) for developing relationships, has changed into a"self-showcase"platform for the younger generation.Instead of seeking active interactions, they share content like scenic photos or daily routines, with little expectation of feedback.Actions such as casually unfollowing, blocking strangers or using 24-hour disappearing posts show their wish to avoid burdensome"emotional labor"from shallow virtual ties. This shift comes from their desire to escape overwhelming pressure from empty digital interactions.
While critics dismiss light socializing as a sign of"emotional coldness",it actually reflects a thoughtful adaptation.Psychologist Lu Chen argues that by embracing this approach, young people regain control over their online space—sharing freely without the anxiety of meeting others' expectations.Even social platforms have evolved to meet this need:many now offer"silent modes",such as hidden interaction records and one-way posting features, acknowledging the widespread acceptance of light socializing.
In a world tightly bound by digital connections, light socializing strikes a delicate balance between self-expression and privacy protection. It is not a refusal of social bonds but a wise pursuit of healthier, more autonomous online engagement. This trend shows the younger generation's maturity in safeguarding their mental well-being,representing a forward-looking and thoughtful approach to modern social interactions.
12.What does Lina do on social media? ______
A. She only posts artworks.
B. She shares life but skips deep chats.
C. She never replies to comments.
D. She focuses on building deep online bonds.
13.According to Min Li,what has social media become for young people now? ______
A. A center for deep relationships.
B. A platform for personal display.
C. A tool to seek frequent interactions.
D. A space to reduce pressure by virtual ties.
14.What can we infer about"light socializing"? ______
A. It encourages safe online engagement.
B. It makes young people emotionally cold.
C. It relies mainly on platforms' silent modes.
D. It abandons social bonds to protect mental health.
15.What can be a suitable title for the text? ______
A. Keep Silent Modes On
B. Keep the Digital Distance
C. Social Media:"Self-showcase"Platform
D. Emotional Coldness:Online Life's Secret

On a summer vacation morning,I went to a bookstore with my mom.As we stepped through the entrance,a large sign immediately captured my attention. It read, "Books:Open Doors to New Worlds.Discover,Dream,Delight." These words seemed to dance in the sunlight, leading me to explore all the wonders they promised.
When we made our way between the shelves,I spotted a beautiful book with a cover that was a masterpiece of colors and images.Unconsciously,my hand reached out to trace the outlines of the illustrations.I turned to my mom,my eyes begging for this book, but she shook her head with a sad expression. Our family was going through a tough time financially, and there was no room for such an expensive purchase.Disappointed,I dragged my feet and left.
The next day, unable to resist the temptation,I found myself back at the store.I slipped the book into my bag,my hands trembling with a mix of excitement and guilt.Just as I was about to leave, the store owner noticed me.I froze,my face flushing with shame as I was caught red-handed.He stared at me,from whose eyes I could feel the judgement.I wanted to disappear, but there was no escape. With a shaky voice,I admitted stealing the book, and promised to make things right. As I walked out,the sign seemed to scold me.It was a reminder that the world I entered by a wrong path was disheartening.
I walked home slowly, each step filled with fear. When I saw my mom,I burst into tears and told her the truth. She looked disappointed, but there was a glimmer of relief in her eyes that I was honest. She hugged me and said softly, "You made a mistake, but you had the courage to face it.Remember, there are always right ways to get what you want." I nodded. After a moment of silence,my mom said, "Let's make things right."
