With the development of technology, our city life is becoming more and more “smart”. Here are some great technologies that make our cities “smart”.
Sensors (传感器) Sensors are like eyes in every corner of the city. They can see and feel things by collecting data (数据) on people and the environment.
Internet of Things It is like the blood vessels (血管) of a city, connecting everything to the Internet. Imagine when you are nearly home, and your smart watch can tell your home to turn on the lights. This has become a reality with the Internet of Things.
5G 5G provides high-speed wireless (无线的) Internet. It is what makes the Internet of Things possible. The speed of 5G can be up to 10 GB per second. With such a speed, we can download a film in just a few seconds.

In other words, they sound more like tech salespeople than city builders.
City planning should always focus on (专注于) one question: what can be done to improve the living conditions of the citizens Tech companies should develop more technologies that can help citizens’ daily lives. Some project designers can do some surveys on citizens in order to learn about the problems citizens meet daily so that they can design something useful.

While most middle school students are playing sports or video games, Samuel Kaspar from the US is doing something different. The 9th grader built an online project to help doctors find pneumonia (肺炎) early. Research shows that this illness causes over 2 million deaths around the world every year.
Kaspar got the idea when his sister became sick with pneumonia. He started learning about how doctors use X-rays to see inside the body. ☆ X-ray pictures take a long time to load (加载), the machines for checking cost too much, and sometimes doctors get too busy or make mistakes.
Then he had a smart idea. “Why not use AI to solve these problems ” So Kaspar created “Machine Learning Model to Check Pneumonia”. It stores X-rays in the cloud, which is faster and cheaper. His AI tool can examine chest (胸部) X-rays and look for signs of pneumonia, a friendly chat robot that helps patients understand their results. It uses real medical information to give clear answers.
Kaspar said the hardest part was “connecting all the services”, but he didn’t give up. His hard work won him the Lemelson Early Inventor Prize. “This gives me more motivation to work harder,” he said. “I want to keep learning and help people with technology. Maybe one day I can really make a difference.”

How to Build a Solar-Powered Phone Charger Building your own solar charger is easier than you think—and great for the environment! Here’s how to do it step by step.
First, gather your materials: a small solar panel (about 6 volts), a USB charging module, a rechargeable battery, wires, and a plastic box. 46 You can find most of these at an electronics store or online.
Next, connect the solar panel to the battery using the wires. Make sure the positive (+) and negative (–) ends match. 47 If you mix them up, the battery won’t charge—or worse, it might get damaged.
Then, attach the USB module to the battery. This will let you plug in your phone. Put everything inside the plastic box to protect it from rain. 48 Drill a small hole for the USB port so you can access it easily.
49 Place your charger in direct sunlight for 4–6 hours. On cloudy days, it may take longer. Once the battery is full, you can charge your phone anytime—even at night!
Finally, test it! Plug in your phone and check if it’s charging. 50 If not, double-check all your connections. With a little patience, you’ll have a green, reusable power source!
A.Safety first: always disconnect the battery before making changes.
B.Don’t forget to label each wire clearly.
C.Make sure the box is waterproof if you plan to use it outdoors.
D.Now it’s time to charge the battery.
E.This simple device can save you money and reduce e-waste.
F.You’ll also need a soldering iron and some tape.
G.If everything works, congratulations—you’ve built a solar charger!

On November 13, 2023, people across Kenya took part in their first national tree-planting holiday. The holiday was set to encourage people to plant trees.
Kenya is famous for its beautiful forests and wildlife. But large areas of Kenya’s forests have been cut down, either for the wood or for farming. Kenya has less and less land covered by forests. The government wants to plant 15 billion trees by 2032 to cover 30% of its land with trees.
In early November, the government announced (宣布) National Tree Growing Day would fall on November 13. To prepare for the day, the government got 150 million young trees ready for planting. The government also created a special app to help organize the tree planting. The app helps people collect young trees, find places to plant, and record their efforts (努力). It also helps the government find out how many trees have been planted in different areas around the country.
On that day, people all over Kenya turned out in large numbers to take part in the holiday. In the capital, Nairobi, hundreds of people joined in, even though it was raining. Government leaders led planting efforts in different parts of the country. Workers, students, families, and other groups showed up to take part.

Hi Ben,
I’m very happy to receive your letter. It sounds like you had a meaningful time during the “Clean-up Day”! I’m glad you’re taking action to protect the environment.
As a green student, I also try to do my part. For example, I always carry a reusable water bottle and shopping bag to reduce plastic waste. I also recycle paper and separate trash at home. At school, my classmates and I often plant trees and participate in energy-saving campaigns, like turning off lights when not in use.
I believe small actions can make a big difference. Let’s continue to work together for a greener planet!
Looking forward to hearing more about your eco-friendly activities.
Yours,
Li Hua
