Some large American companies, including Google, Facebook, and Twitter, are
experimenting with cutting pay for employees working from home in less costly areas.
The experiment could set a direction for other large companies after the pandemic. A Google
pay calculator shows that Google employees could see changes in their pay if they go from
working in the office to working from home permanently. Those who move farther away from the
office could be hit harder.
Facebook and Twitter have also cut pay for work-from-home, or remote employees who
move to less costly areas. Google offers a pay calculator—a device that permits them to see the
effects of a move. But some remote employees, especially those who commute from long
distances, could experience pay cuts without changing their address. A Google spokesperson said
that pay will differ from city to city and state to state, adding that Google always pays at the top of
the local market based on where an employee works from.
One Google employee travels to the Seattle office from a nearby area. The employee was
considering remote work but decided to keep going to the office-despite the two-hour trip. The
employee would likely see their pay cut by about 10 percent by working from home full time. "It's
as high of a pay cut as I got for my most recent promotion. I didn't do all that hard work to get
promoted to then take a pay cut," he said.
Jake Rosenfeld of Washington University researches pay structures. He said Google's pay
structure worries employees about the effects on their families. "What's clear is that Google
doesn't have to do this," He said. "It's not like they can't afford to pay their workers who choose to
work remotely the same that they are used to receiving."
4.Who would be likely to get their pay cut mostly
A.Employees working in the office. B.Employees living in less costly areas.
C.Employees commuting from long distances.
D.Employees working at home temporarily.
5.What will decide on a Google employee's pay at the local market
A.Working places. B.Living places. C.Contributions. D.Working hours.
6.What can be inferred about the employee from Paragraph 4
A.He wants another promotion. B.He keeps working at the office.
C.He will see his pay cut soon. D.He prefers working at home
7.What can we say about Jake Rosenfeld's opinion
A.He is for Google's pay structure B.He is against Google's pay structure.

Many people have fears while traveling abroad. But with so many good places to visit in
this world, fears that hold you back are stopping you from wonderful experiences more than they
are protecting you. Not being able to communicate can not only be worrying, but sometimes it can
even be a bit scary. But don’t let a fear of failing to speak the foreign language inhibit you.
First, try to learn a few words ahead of time, like please, thank you, hello, goodbye. This
will go a long way in showing the locals you’re trying. A phrasebook can help, but remember that
you may not understand the reply you get.
Second, write down the hotel you chose, and any places of interest you’re planning on
visiting. It helps to show a taxi driver or someone you’re asking directions from if you have it
written down since it’s possible that you won’t pronounce it correctly.
Third, one of the few words I find to be common is “toilet”. In the US people often ask
where to find the bathroom or restroom, but that’s not so easily understood for someone whose
native language(母语)isn’t English. But even in the middle of Southeast Asia, people understand
the word toilet.
Lastly, try drawing. Andy and I were in a taxi in Izmir, Turkey trying to get to the castle,
but the driver didn’t know what we were saying. So Andy quickly drew a castle. The driver
laughed and nodded, and then brought us to the castle.
8.What does the underlined word “inhibit” in the first paragraph mean
A.hurt. B.Change. C.Prevent. D.Protect.
9.What’s the purpose of the author telling us his own story in Izmir, Turkey
A.To tell us drawing is helpful. B.To show drawing is easy.
C.To show they were wise. D.To tell us how to draw.
10.What will you possibly do when you fail to reach a tourist destination abroad
A.Draw the place to a taxi driver and you’ll be brought there.
B.Ask a taxi driver to write down the place you’ll get to.
C.Try to use GPS navigator.
D.Buy a phrasebook.
11.What does the author try to do through the text
A.Reduce our fear of learning a foreign language.
B.Teach us how to learn a foreign language abroad.
C.Show us how to ask for help in foreign countries.
D.Tell us how to communicate when we tour abroad.

Media multitasking, such as scrolling through social media while watching a movie, may be
linked to more brief failures in attention and difficulty remembering things.
试卷第 1 页,共 7 页
“Our data support the idea that we should be aware of how we engage with media,” says
Kevin Paul Madore at Stanford University in California. He and his team compared people’s
self-reported levels of media multitasking with their performances in a memory task, as part of a
study including 80 participants aged 18 to 26.
The researchers specifically tested episodic memory, which helps us recall events, by
presenting the participants with images of objects on a computer and then later asking them to
recall whether they had seen the objects earlier or not. At the same time, the team used EEG and
eye tracking to monitor people’s attentiveness.
Madore and his colleagues also asked participants to complete a questionnaire to determine
how often they engage in various forms of media multitasking, such as texting while watching TV
or reading while listening to music. They found that people who reported more frequent media
multitasking had more brief failures in attention during the memory task, which was associated
with increased difficulties with remembering.
“I think conscious awareness of attentiveness and limiting potential distractions can go a long
way in memory preparedness and reducing mind wandering or mind blanking,” says Madore.
“Resisting media multitasking during school lectures or work zones, or limiting media
multitasking to set times, could be valuable.”
“Media multitasking is becoming more prominent. We don’t actually know anything about
the effects yet,” says Amy Orben at the University of Cambridge. It will be important to
investigate whether media multitasking causes brief attentional failure and memory failure or
whether there is another factor, such as how generally distractible a person is, that could explain
the association. “This could be investigated through studies that monitor people over time and this
is a really interesting area that we should explore,” she says.
12.What were the research subjects asked to do
A.Monitor their attentiveness. B.Recall the content of the images.
C.Describe their frequency of media multitasking.
D.Answer some questions on potential distractions.
13.According to Madore, what can benefit people’s memory
A.Avoiding mind wandering. B.Restricting media multitasking.
C.Engaging less with social media. D.Being aware of potential distractions.
14.What will the future study most probably focus on
A.How generally distractible a person is.
B.How to monitor people in the long run.
C.What should be factored in attentional failures.
D.Whether media multitasking gives rise to inattention.
15.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.More Media Multitasking, Worse Memory
B.More Media Multitasking, Less Efficiency
C.Media Multitasking — a Barrier to Success
试卷第 2 页,共 7 页
D.Media Multitasking — a Distraction from Work

How to Excel in Poetry Writing
If you are serious about your poetry, then you should consider the suggestions presented here.
16 Many poets have also used these tips to make poetry publishing possible in
their life.
Write Every Day. It is important that all writers write every day. 17 You should
remove all distractions so that you can be focused during this time. Many writers will set realistic
goals for themselves as to how many words they will write each day or at least a specific amount
of time when they have to write. You don’t have to write about anything specific as long as you
are writing something.
Join a Writing Group. You can fine-tune your craft even more by joining a writing group or
community. 38. 18 There are thousands of writing communities that you can join.
You should get involved in writers’ discussions and should trade your work with other writers for
review and critique. By doing this you will receive valuable feedback and will also learn a lot by
reviewing the work of other writers.
Challenge Yourself. One of the best things that you can do and that can actually help you
greatly with poetry publishing, is taking part in contests that are designed for novice poets.
19 You can easily find these contests online and can commit yourself to taking part in them.
Most of these contests have a strict structure and rules that must be followed. A challenge
like this is a great way to truly push yourself as a writer. 20 Some contests offer cash
prizes while others offer publication of the winning pieces of poetry in the contest.
A.With the use of the Internet this is an easy task.
B.Many of these poetry contests even offer prizes!
C.You can turn to others for help in writing poems.
D.Read your poetry after finishing it in no time.
E.Set aside a specific amount of time for writing.
F.These ideas have assisted many writers in getting serious about writing.
G.There are thousands of poetry contests conducted every year.

When I was five years old, my mom took me to the zoo, and it was there that I first saw a
giraffe. He was taller than most buildings I had seen. His neck stretched (伸) up, up and up, far
into the bright blue sky, almost touching the clouds. His fur was a dim shade of yellow, and dark
brown polka dots (波尔卡圆点) could be found all over him. His long tail stretched toward the
ground, almost sweeping the grass.
I imagined climbing on top of him—I would need a ladder (梯子), of course—and riding him
through my own yard. On his back, I would be high enough to reach the branches on the trees. I
would feel like I was flying through the air! It was then that I knew I wanted—no, needed—to
have this giraffe as my very own pet.
When I told my mother this news, she shook her head and said, “I’m sorry, Max, but we can’t
take that giraffe home. Where would he sleep We have no room for him I think."
“In my room, of course. I’d love to share my bed with him," I said excitedly.
“He is much too tall to fit in your room," my mother said, laughing.
“Ah ... I would cut a hole in the roof so he could stick his head out.”
“And what about when it rains outside How can you protect him from rains and even snow
in a cold winter " asked my mom.
“Well, I could climb onto the roof with an umbrella for his head so he would not get wet."
“It is much too dangerous for little boys to go climbing on roofs. I’m very sorry, but we just
can’t take that giraffe home. It’s better for him to continue to stay in the zoo where he can play
with his friends."
I sighed (叹气) as we left the zoo, and I left my pet giraffe behind forever.

47.Later that night, after supper, my dad told me to come into the living room for a surprise.
There was a cage on the floor of the living room. I ran to see that there was a hamster in the cage.
It had yellow fur and a pair of black eyes. Its two triangular ears stood on the top of its head. The
small nose and mouth connected. Small nostrils kept moving up and down, and the mouth was like
a rabbit’s mouth. And there were several white whiskers on the mouth. Dad said this hamster was
a pet for me.
I named my pet hamster (仓鼠)Giraffe. Because it reminded me of my pet the giraffe in the
zoo. Today, I began to learn how to take care of the hamster, such as feeding and drinking, and
cleaning it. I like to look at it and talk about my mood of the day. Maybe one day I will take him
to the zoo to see the giraffe I want to raise.
