Homestay provides English language students with the opportunity to speak English outside the classroom and the experience of being part of a British home.
What to Expect
The host will provide accommodation and meals. Rooms will be cleaned and bedcovers changed at least once a week. You will be given the house key and the host is there to offer help and advice as well as to take an interest in your physical and mental health.
Accommodation Zones
Homestays are located in London mainly in Zones 2, 3 and 4 of the transport system. Most hosts do not live in the town centre as much of central London is commercial and not residential. Zones 3 and 4 often offer larger accommodation in a less crowded area. It is very convenient to travel in London by Underground.
Meal Plans Available
Continental Breakfast
Breakfast and Dinner
Breakfast, Packed Lunch and Dinner
It’s important to note that few English families still provide a traditional cooked breakfast. Your accommodation includes Continental Breakfast which normally consists of fruit juice, cereal (谷物类食品), bread and tea or coffee. Cheese, fruit and cold meat are not part of a Continental Breakfast in England. Dinners usually consist of meat or fish with vegetables followed by dessert, fruit and coffee.
Friends
If you wish to invite a friend over to visit, you must first ask your host’s permission. You have no right to entertain friends in a family home as some families feel it is an invasion of their privacy.
Self-Catering Accommodation in Private Homes
Accommodation on a room-only basis includes shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and often a main living room. This kind of accommodation offers an independent lifestyle and is more suitable for the long-stay student. However, it does not provide the same family atmosphere as an ordinary homestay and may not benefit those who need to practise English at home quite as much.

Tim Richter and his wife, Linda, had taught for over 30 years near Buffalo, New York-he in computers, she in special education. "Teaching means everything to us," Tim would say. In April 1998, he learned he would need a heart operation. It was the kind of news that leads to some serious thinking about life’s purpose.
Not long after the operation, Tim saw a brochure describing Imagination Library, a program started by Dolly Parton’s foundation (基金会) that mailed a book every month to children from birth to age five in the singer’s home town of Sevier, Tennessee. "I thought, maybe Linda and I could do something like this when we retire," Tim recalls. He placed the brochure on his desk, "as a reminder."
Five years later, now retired and with that brochure still on the desk, Tim clicked on imaginationlibrary.com. The program had been opened up to partners who could take advantage of book and postage discounts.
The quality of the books was of great concern to the Richters. Rather than sign up online, they went to Dollywood for a look-see. "We didn’t want to give the children rubbish," says Linda. The books-reviewed each year by teachers, literacy specialists, and Dollywood board members-included elassies such as The Snowy Day and newer books like Llama Llama series.
Satisfied, the couple set up the Richter Family Foundation and got to work. Since 2004, they have shipped more than 12, 200 books to preschoolers in their area. Megan Williams, a mother of four, is more than appreciative: "This program introduces us to books I’ve never heard of."
The Richters spend about $ 400 a month sending books to 200 children. "Some people sit there and wait to die," says Tim. "Others get as busy as they can in the time they have left."

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, the number of solar panels installed (安装) has grown rapidly in the past decade, and it has to grow even faster to meet climate goals. But all of that growth will take up a lot of space, and though more and more people accept the concept of solar energy, few like large solar panels (控制板) to be installed near them.
Solar developers want to put up panels as quickly and cheaply as possible, so they haven’t given much thought to what they put under them. Often, they’ll end up filling the area with small stones and using chemicals to control weeds (杂草). The result is that many communities, especially in farming regions, see solar farms as destroyers of the soil.
"Solar projects need to be good neighbors," says Jordan Macknick, the head of the Innovative Site Preparation and Impact Reductions on the Environment (InSPIRE) project. "They need to be protectors of the land and contribute to the agricultural economy." InSPIRE is investigating practical approaches to "low-impact" solar development, which focuses on establishing and operating solar farms in a way that is kinder to the land. One of the easiest low-impact solar strategies is providing habitat for pollinators (传粉昆虫).
Habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change have caused dramatic declines (减少) in pollinator populations over the past couple of decades, which has damaged the U.S. agricultural economy. Over 28 states have passed laws related to pollinator habitat protection and pesticide use. Conservation (保护) organizations put out pollinator-friendliness guidelines for home gardens, businesses, schools, cities- and now there are guidelines for solar farms.
Over the past few years, many solar farm developers have transformed the space under their solar panels into a shelter for various kinds of pollinators, resulting in soil improvement and carbon reduction. "These pollinator-friendly solar farms can have a valuable impact on everything that’s going on in the landscape," says Macknick.
28. What do solar developers often ignore
A. The negative impact of installing solar panels.
B. The decline in the demand for solar energy.
C. The most recent advances in solar technology.
D. The rising labor cost of building solar farms.
29. What does InSPIRE aim to do
A. Invent new methods for controlling weeds.
B. Improve the productivity of local farms.
C. Promote the use of solar energy in rural areas.
D. Make solar projects environmentally friendly.
30. What is the purpose of the laws mentioned in Paragraph 4
A. To ensure the supply of energy.
B. To protect pollinators.
C. To limit solar development.
D. To diversify the economy.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Solar Energy: Hope for the Future
B. Solar Farms: A New Development
C. Pollinators: To Leave or to Stay
D. InSPIRE: A Leader in Agriculture
D
You are given many opportunities in life to choose to be a victim (受害者) or a creator. When you choose to be a victim, the world is a cold and difficult place. "They" did things to you which caused all of your pain and suffering. "They" are wrong and bad, and life is terrible as long as "they" are around. Or you may blame yourself for all your problems, thus internalizing (内化) your victimization. The truth is, your life is likely to stay that way as long as you feel a need to blame yourself or others.
Those who choose to be creators look at life quite differently. They know there are individuals who might like to control their lives, but they don’t let this get in the way. They know they have their weaknesses, yet they don’t blame themselves when they fail. Whatever happens, they have choice in the matter. They believe that storms are a natural part of life which can bring the rain needed for emotional and spiritual growth.
Victims and creators live in the same physical world and deal with many of the same physical realities, yet their experience of life is worlds apart. Victims relish (沉溺) in anger, guilt, and other emotions that cause others- and even themselves- to feel like victims, too. Creators choose love, inspiration, and other qualities which inspire not only themselves, but all around them. Both vietims and creators always have choice to determine the direction of their lives.
In reality, all of us play the victim or the creator at various points in our lives. One person, on losing a job or a special relationship, may feel as if it is the end of the world and sink into terrible suffering for months, years, or even a lifetime. Another with the same experience may choose to first experience the grief (悲伤), then accept the loss and soon move on to be a powerful creative force in his life.
In every moment and every circumstance, you can choose to have a fuller, richer life by setting a clear intention to transform the victim within, and by inviting into your life the powerful creator that you are.
32. According to Paragraph 2, creators_____.
A. have potential to create something new
B. seem willing to experience failures in life
C. possess the ability to predict future life
D. handle ups and downs of life wisely
33. What can we learn from Paragraph 3
A. Victims can influence more people than creators.
B. Compared with victims, creators are more emotional.
C. Creators and victims are masters of their lives.
D. Creators and victims face quite different things in life.
34. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage
A. To explain the relationship between victims and creators.
B. To suggest the transformation from victims to creators.
C. To evaluate victims against creators.
D. To describe victims and creators.
