It is 5 June, World Environment Day (WED). Our class goes to a forest park to learn more about trees.
Trees keep the air clean. They take in harmful gases from the air and produce oxygen for us to breathe. They are main fighters against air pollution. We get fruit and oil from trees. Tea also comes from leaves of trees. Lots of tables and chairs are made of wood. We cannot imagine a world without trees.
However, in many parts of the world, people cut down huge areas of forests. It raises the temperature, causes animals to move or die and turns farmlands into deserts. So, China started a tree-planting program and has planted more trees than the rest of the world in the last 50 years. Who are some of the people behind the achievement Let’s find out.
In Jiangxi Province, Zou Lianying has been planting trees on her land since the age of 64. She sold her cows and pigs and borrowed money to open a forest farm. The farm has more than 8 million trees. But she won’t cut down even one tree and still lives very simply. She believes the forest she is planting will be a gift to future generations.
Near Beijing, Wei Guiying and a team of helpers have planted millions of trees. They have been working at this for more than 20 years. It hasn’t been easy for her. She also borrowed money to do this. Seeing millions of trees around her, she says proudly, “I’m a millionaire.”

The Taklimakan Desert, which is in the northwest of China, is the biggest desert in our country. It has been a big worry because it’s really large, about 337,600 square kilometers and there are a lot of sandstorms that come from it. These sandstorms are very bad for the nature and the people live around. So, people started a big project to put a green belt (带) around the desert.
By the end of 2023, a large part of a 2,761-kilometer-long green belt had already been made around the desert. In 2024, the last 285 kilometers, mostly in the south of the desert where the sandstorms are super bad, were finished. Now the whole Taklimakan Desert has a green belt all around it. This project has to do with six counties (县) in three parts of Xinjiang.
The building of this green belt used many different scientific ways. For example, the China Railway Construction Development Group made a system to stop the sand. This system has three main things. There are tall things to stop the sand, squares made of straw (草方格) and wide lines of trees. These things work together well to stop the desert from getting bigger.
When the green belt around the desert was successfully finished, it brought a lot of good things. First, it made the nature around the desert better. There are fewer and not as strong sandstorms now. Second, it kept the farming near the desert safe. So, farmers can grow food more easily. Also, the places where people live in cities and in the countryside are nicer. Because there are fewer sandstorms, there is less harm to the things like roads and buildings, and more people come to visit. Now the local people can make more money from having visitors.
36.What do you know about the Taklimakan Desert
A.It’s in the west of China. B.It’s the biggest in the world. C.It causes many sandstorms.

Four years ago, Victor’s father gave him the choice of learning soccer or charrería, one of Mexico’s best-known and most popular sports.
“I told him, ‘Let’s go and do charrería right now!’” said Victor, now 18.
Victor is now attending a Mexican school training young people in traditional cowboy skills. The school, which opened in 2016, offers free classes to young “charros (墨西哥牛仔)”. Newcomers and foreigners are welcome. Today, there are about 100 students, both girls and boys. They take part in three hours of training twice a week to improve their skills.
The first challenge is to learn how to throw a lasso (套索) around the neck of a calm bull. When students have learned that, they progress to getting on a horse using stirrups (马镫). Then comes learning to ride the horse and finally to lasso moving animals. So far, Victor has learned to ride a horse, as well as throw a lasso.
Professional charros also get along well with horses. They follow strict training and pay great attention to their horses’ reactions (反应). For them, charrería is a way of life, and respecting and caring for animals is a must. Charrería is not just a weekend fun activity.

When winter comes, Siberian cranes migrate from northeast Siberia in Russia to Poyang Lake in Jiangxi Province, China. About 95 percent of the birds spend the season. However, climate change has endangered the birds’ habitats.
“In some years, the Poyang Lake experiences floods, while in others, it experiences droughts. Both of these lead to the problem that there isn’t enough food in the cranes’ habitat,” Qian Fawen, a researcher from the National Bird Banding Center of China, said to China Daily.
To help deal with the problem, the local government has built 70 hectares of lotus roots in Nanchang to provide food during the winter for the cranes. The bird population has risen from about 3,000 to more than 5,000 over the past 20 years, according to Qian.
Over the years, China has worked hard to protect migratory birds. Recently, 1,140 places in the country have been taken as important breeding grounds, wintering grounds and migratory stops, with most of them located in wetlands. They play a key role in cleaning water, preventing floods, and helping with biodiversity.
To protect China’s wetlands, the Wetlands Protection Law was introduced on June 1, 2022. It stops building work on important national wetlands and stops activities, including giving out wastewater. Thanks to these efforts, China has reported more bird wintering in the nation’s wetlands. For example, last December, Shanghai Chongming Dongtan Bird National Nature Reserve recorded more than 2,900 tundra swans up from some 1,000 seen during the winter of 2021.
