For whoever wants an exciting and challenging road trip, we came up with our list of the world’s most dangerous roads that would test even the best road trip cars. Read on to discover routes that promise unmatched thrills!
Col du Chaussy, France
At 1532 metres above sea level, Col du Chaussy is a high mountain pass in south-eastern France. This stretch is only about 3.2 km long but features 17 hairpin turns. There’s a small concrete barrier as you zigzag upward but this improbable road, while impossibly picturesque, is still one of the most dangerous roads in the world.
Taroko Gorge Road, Taiwan
Taroko Gorge Road in Taiwan is framed by rock on one side and sheer cliff drops on the other. The popular 19 km stretch is so spectacular that it draws a constant parade of tour buses cars, scooters, bicyclists and pedestrians, all sharing the same narrow road. If you want to hit this road, you’d better hope the weather is fair, otherwise, you might suffer through landslides and floods that make sections impassable.
Commonwealth Avenue, Philippines
Unlike other roads and highways on this list, this one isn’t perched on the edge of a mountain. In fact, it’s a wide urban highway that’s just 12 km long. Due to poor drainage which brings floods on the avenue, this road has earned the tragic nickname “Killer Highway”.

On my first day at my current job, I came to work expecting a friendly welcome — but I was met with silence. After a quick introduction to the business manager, I was told where to get my ID and then left to figure the rest out on my own. I distinctly remember walking into my first departmental meeting, eager to meet my colleagues, only for the boss to skip over introducing me entirely. Not really the type of environment that inspires a feeling of belonging.
The initial isolation stuck with me. Instead of waiting for the workplace culture to change, I decided to create my own sense of community. I started a lunch group, which grew into a regular coffee hour. I invited new hires to join informal meetups, fostering connections before and after department meetings. Over time, this small, self-made network became my anchor (精神支柱) at work. But what if I hadn’t built that community myself
Chances are I would have left the job. Increasingly, researchers are realizing that cultivating a sense of belonging is critical for workforce retention (保留). Historically, studies on workforce retention have focused on more fundamental factors like pay, hours, and workload. These are all important qualities that cannot be ignored. But they are not sufficient.
You must have heard of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The theory suggests lower-level needs must be met before you can progress to higher-level needs. At the base of Maslow’s hierarchy, physiological and safety needs must be met. This is where fundamentals like pay, hours, and workplace safety would fall. Just above that is the need for love and belonging. In a workplace, this translates to a sense of connection and feeling like part of the team.
According to Maslow’s theory, it’s impossible to be the best version of ourselves without meeting these fundamental needs. So although, yes, being paid fairly is important, it’s not enough to motivate employees to operate at their highest level. For that, you need to cultivate a culture of belonging.
4. What did the writer experience on the first day of his new job
A. Emotional distance between colleagues. B. A detailed tour around the workplace.
C. A warm welcome from the department. D. Brief training from the business manager.
5. What is the writer’s purpose of initiating a lunch group
A. Building up a sense of connection. B. Establishing a regular break time.
C. Conducting meetings over dinner. D. Passing on the workplace culture.
6. Why does the writer introduce Maslow’s theory
A. To describe an ideal working environment. B. To discuss the role of pay in job satisfaction.
C. To suggest an effective management approach. D. To explain the contributors to workforce retention.
7. What does the last paragraph imply for a workplace
A. Workplace safety is a higher-level need.
B. A rise in pay can best motivate the employees.
C. A culture of belonging unlocks a workforce’s potential.
D. Basic needs bring out the best versions of the employees.
C
Are you a short video app user Chances are that you’re more familiar with 15-second sped-up clips of songs than with the original tracks themselves. This trend has been evident on social media platforms, notably Douyin and TikTok, where creators boost the rhythm by 25-30 percent to match short viral videos featuring dances or other themes.
These altered versions have even pushed some musicians to the top of official singles charts (排行榜). As a Radio Anthems host told the BBC, although sped-up versions of songs can help artists gain widespread attention, that initial success may not last. This isn’t just about music. Social media users also accelerate podcasts, movies, etc. for quicker consumption. The sped-up mode provides a faster way to achieve the dopamine (多巴胺) rush that social media aims to spark, leading to addiction and influencing our actions.
While it seems efficient, speeding up content has significant disadvantages. “So many people worked hard making specific decisions about pacing, lighting, timing and music, and speeding that all up just ruins it,” a Reddit user commented. Another user also mentioned that if someone consumes content this way, their viewpoint of the movie or the song is not reasonable.
It seems that people speed up content not because they enjoy movies and songs but rather simply to complete the action of “watching” and “listening”. It’s as if they’re telling the creators: “I don’t have the patience to care about all the detailed design and subtle emotions you put into the work.” All they want is a quick general idea of “what’s going on” and a feeling of “wow I just consumed another piece of information”.
Evidently, this approach weakens creators’ efforts and erodes people’s patience. However, people often fail to realize that this also destroys their patience with life. Beginning with sped-up songs and movies, it gradually creeps into daily life. A Chinese netizen once shared, “I found myself becoming impatient with doing research for my work or preparing for a test,” highlighting how this habit extends to longer-term tasks.
We already live in a fast-paced society, yet we still try to speed it up in every aspect. What’s the rush Some things should not be sped up, like our patience for beauty and hard work.
8. What might be a possible result of sped-up song versions on social media
A. They boost the popularity of original songs.
B. They decrease the consumption of short videos.
C. They lead musicians to top official singles charts.
D. They help musicians maintain long-term success.
9. From Reddit users’ perspectives, what impact does speeding up content have
A. It damages media’s works and devalues consumers’ views.
B. It enhances the dopamine rush for better mood.
C. It offers a more effective way to grasp the content.
D. It reduces audience’s appreciation level of art.
10. What is the primary function of the fourth paragraph
A. To propose a solution to the problem of shortened attention spans.
B. To state the underlying intention behind consuming sped-up content.
C. To compare different methods of consuming media.
D. To highlight the technical process of speeding up videos.
11. Which of the following best summarizes the author’s overall attitude towards the trend of speeding up content
A. Neutral. B. Supportive. C. Negative. D. Indifferent.
D
Tell me about what you had for dinner last night. You could give perceptual (感知的) descriptions of how your food looked and tasted. Or you could focus more on conceptual experiences, such as what that food made you think and feel. A new brain study found that telling the same story different ways activates different memory mechanisms in the listener's brain.
Signy Sheldon, a psychologist studying memory at McGill University, and her colleagues asked 35 participants to listen to two versions of the same restaurant story. In the first version, the narrator says, “Food was finally served. I remember the two-foot-long pepper mill (研磨器) the waiter used to season our dishes. My spaghetti noodles were circled around three meatballs on my plate. It looked really good.” In the second, he said, “I remember thinking to myself how delicious the spaghetti was. Looking back, I'm not sure if it was because I was starving.“
When participants recalled the story that they heard with conceptual details in the scanner, their brain hippocampi (海马区) activated along with parts of a brain network called the default mode network, or DMN, that is active when processing information about oneself, one’s emotions, and more. In contrast, when people recalled perception-heavy stories, the hippocampi activated along with brain networks outside of the DMN, including the left brain area. This area is known to be active when recalling memories that contain details from various senses.
Though participants remembered both types of stories equally well in the short term, they tended to prefer the conceptual stories to the perceptual ones and were more confident in their recollections of them. Such preference may be especially true as people get older. Research shows that as people age, they shift away from vivid, event-specific sensory details and toward memories that grasp the main points of what happened, shaping how they remember what they were told. When we're young, “Things are really novel. We're going to pay attention to everything,” Sheldon says. “But as we get older, we use memories more for social connection, and we often are recalling and describing things that we are more familiar with.”
12. What is the difference between two versions of the same restaurant story
A. The tones of voice. B. The intensity of emotion.
C. The variety of food. D. The types of description.
13. Which story makes DMN in the brain active
A. The air feels cool on my skin. B. The sunflower is dancing in the wind.
C. The teddy bear makes me comforted. D. The coffee smells rich and tastes bitter.
14. What does the underlined word “them” refer to in the last paragraph
A. Conceptual stories. B. Research steps. C. Social preferences. D. Perceptual stories.
15. Which of the following is the best title of the text
A. Stories sharpen your mind B. Emotion deepens bonding
C. You are what you memorize D. Storytelling methods count

On March 23 this year, cities worldwide turned off their lights for Earth Hour. The event was created to call attention to global warming, which involves the heating up of the planet. ___16___ A less-discussed issue, light pollution, should also be given attention.
Most people live under skies filled with light that isn't natural. Traffic lights, street signs and buildings all give off artificial light. Artificial light is troublesome for creatures big and small. Birds can’t use stars to find their way since stars are invisible. Some insects get confused by artificial light when they fly at night. ___17___ People who are against light pollution think the issue needs more attention. Diana Umpierre, the president of the International Dark-Sky Association, warns that light pollution is worsening with population growth. The group aims to protect the night sky from too much light. ___18___ They say that light pollution makes it hard to study space with telescopes in cities.
The problem of light pollution is slowly getting noticed. The American Medical Association (AMA) recently raised a red flag about LED lights. LED lights use less energy and last longer. ___19___ However, LED lights are not perfect. AMA suggests that LED lights can create a view-obscuring glare (遮挡视线的眩光). They also disturb sleep more than traditional street lamps.
___20___ Citizens of Madrid, Spain, are calling on scientists to study LED lights. They want to know more about the safety and health effects of the lights. Public pressure has already pushed some cities to use yellow LED lights, which are thought to be less harmful. Quebec and Montreal, both cities in Canada, and Phoenix, Arizona, are leading the way.
A. It blocks the night sky even more.
B. Some scientists are concerned, too.
C. Now, citizens are starting to push back.
D. Therefore, they are widely used in many countries.
E. However, Earth Hour should not only be a reminder of global warming.
F. Too much artificial light can also mess up our body clock.
G. People drive more carefully on roads with less lighting.

One Thanksgiving, when my family had little money and even less food, a man knocked on our door carrying a large box of groceries. My father, puzzled, asked, “Who are you Where are you from ”
The stranger replied, “A friend of yours knows you're in need but you won’t accept direct help, so he asked me to bring this for you. Have a great Thanksgiving.” Before my father could say anything more, the man quickly left.
That moment had a lasting impact on me. I promised to help others in the same way one day. By 18, I created my Thanksgiving tradition: buying food for a poor family and dressing up as a delivery boy. I’d leave a note with a message: Take care of yourself, so someday you can help others. This ritual (惯例) brought me more joy than all the money I’ve earned.
Several years ago, I was in New York with my wife on Thanksgiving. She was feeling down because we weren’t with her family. They usually spent the day decorating their house for Christmas. But that year, we were stuck in a hotel, far from home.
I saw the sadness in her eyes and said, “Why don’t we decorate people’s lives instead of just a house ” I told her about my Thanksgiving tradition and suggested we go to Harlem to deliver food to people in need. She smiled and agreed, and her spirits were lifted immediately.
We called a few friends to join us. Since we needed to buy food and transport it, we decided to rent a van (小型货车). However, all the rental vans were booked that day. Then, we walked down the street and asked drivers to take us to Harlem. Most said no, even with $100 offered. After speaking to about 10 drivers, my partners were ready to quit, but I insisted, “Someone will say yes.”
Then, a perfect van appeared — big enough for food and all of us. We approached the driver and asked, “Could you take us to Harlem to deliver food to people in need We’ll pay you $100.”
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

The driver said, “You don’t have to pay me. I’d be happy to join your journey.”

【答案】 AI Meets Ancient Poetry
Last week Mr. Blake, our foreign teacher, gave us an interesting lesson themed “AI Meets Ancient Poetry”.
He first introduced the basic rules of poetry translation and then asked us to input the classic works, such as Du Fu’s “Spring View”, into the AI translation tool. Next, we compared and discussed the machine-generated translations, analyzing the differences in word choice and emotional expression. Finally, Mr. Blake emphasized that AI can assist in understanding, but the sense of language and cultural meaning still require human refinement.
The activity made me realize that technology can serve as a useful bridge but the true charm of poetry lies in the emotional resonance behind the words.
【答案】范文:
Paragraph 1:
The driver said, “You don’t have to pay me. I'd be happy to join your journey.” Then he opened the door wide, and we climbed into the van in excitement. He said, “I'm quite interested in what you are doing. But tell me — what inspired you to do this ” I told him about the Thanksgiving when a stranger helped us and how it inspired me to help others in return. The driver nodded with understanding. “That’s wonderful,” he said. “Let’s go to spread some kindness.” As the van roared to life, we set off on a journey of gratitude.
Paragraph 2:
After an hour’s drive, we finally arrived in Harlem. When we arrived, we bought a lot of food and several baskets. We filled those baskets with enough food to feed seven families for a month. Then, we set off to deliver the food. When we handed over the baskets of food, some were surprised and speechless, and others offered a warm, heartfelt “thank you”. As we left Harlem, I felt a deep sense of fulfillment. The act of giving made me realize that kindness, no matter how small, can bring light to even the darkest corners of the world.
