At first sight, Easthope doesn’t seem much like a Cassandra. She smiles a lot. Her manner is kind and motherly; pushed to name her profession, you might guess at nurse or teacher. But look closer.
Easthope is an emergency planner whose job is to support the survivors of major disasters, in which capacity she acted following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the fire at Grenfell Tower. For two decades, the public knew nothing about this vital work, which went on behind the scenes, though she was hugely admired in what we might call professional disaster circles: a voice of calm and a fountain of wisdom. But in 2023, she published a best-selling book about her career, When the Dust Settles, and that changed. People became very interested in what she did.
“At literary festivals, most authors get questions about their writing process,” Easthope says. “But I wouldn’t get those. What people wanted from me was to know how I lived with the knowledge that I have. Wasn’t I afraid How did I handle I would tell them that I didn’t live afraid, and I would give them basic advice. But this wasn’t enough.” In the end, she felt she had no choice but to write a second book, one in which she would try to distill (浓缩) all that she has learned for the benefit of each individual.
While her publisher describes Come What May as a roadmap for resilience (韧性), the word is one Easthope dislikes. Ready, she suggests, is a better one. Easthope also reminds people that small things, like losing hair during illness or consuming too much food after someone dies, still matter. She encourages people to remember, not to forget, what happened during disasters, because such events leave a long-lasting effect.
21.What might a Cassandra be like according to paragraph 1
A.Severe and forbidding. B.Competent and cautious. C.Friendly and energetic. D.Cheerful and approachable.
22.What led to increased public awareness of Easthope’s work in 2023
A.The publication of a best seller. B.The growth of professional disaster circles.
C.Her involvement in 2004 tsunami relief. D.Her sudden rise to fame through media.
23.Why are readers’ questions cited in paragraph 3
A.To reveal Easthope’s personal fears. B.To explain Easthope’s writing process.
C.To show Easthope’s writing motivation. D.To present public doubts about Easthope’s work.
B
Forests are not just many trees standing together. Beneath the ground, roots and fungus (真菌) connect to share nutrients. This partnership helps trees survive in poor soils and tough conditions. Some trees take this connection further. They link up with two different types of fungus at the same time. Researchers at the University of Zurich (UZH) and Agoscope studied this strategy.
According to the study’s lead author Ido Rog, trees with two fungi reach farther and wider, taking over places where other trees fail, and their roots extend deeper, reaching untapped water reserves. They also access nutrients from various soil levels, widening their survival range. Trees with two fungi grow where others can’t, thriving (茁壮成长) in rocky, poor soil.
Climate change is turning once-thick forests into dry, poor landscapes. Trees that can handle drought and nutrient shortages may become the new standard in reforestation (重新造林) projects. “In forestry, this knowledge could be helpful in the future for selecting tree species specialized in two fungal partnerships,” explained study co-author Professor Marcel van der Heijden. The idea is actually simple: choose trees that can do more with less. Trees that work with two fungi can make the most of resources and cover more area.
There’s more to this story than the survival of individual trees. Trees that form two partnerships with fungus also stabilize (稳固) the soil, prevent soil loss, and create living places for other living beings. These trees shape the landscape, turning poor ground into thriving ecosystems. Trees with two fungi don’t just survive but also change the game, creating new homes and pushing ecological limits.
The forest floor may look silent, but beneath the surface, an active network of connections is at work that could hold the secret to thriving in a changing world.
24.What does “this strategy” in paragraph 1 refer to
A.Roots’ connection with fungus. B.Fungi’s role in nutrient sharing.
C.Forests’ adaptation to poor soils. D.Trees’ partnership with two fungi.
25.What is the main advantage of trees with two fungus partners
A.They have a faster growth speed. B.They get better access to resources.
C.They reduce the demand for water. D.They support a wide variety of wildlife.
26.What can be inferred about reforestation projects in the future
A.They will favor two-fungal trees. B.They will target wet environments.
C.They will focus on ecological restoration. D.They will avoid using fungus-dependent trees.
27.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A.Methods for preventing soil loss. B.Strategies for improving tree survival.
C.Ecological impacts of two-fungal trees. D.Economic benefits of fungus partnerships.
C
Language is embedded (嵌入) in almost every aspect of the way we interact with the world. It’s hard to imagine what it would be like not to have it. What would be the result if we didn’t have names for things or didn’t have experience talking about things that hadn’t actually happened Would we be able to think What would our thoughts be like
The answer to the question of whether thought is possible without language depends on what you mean by “thought”. Can you experience impressions and feelings without language Yes, and very few would argue otherwise. But there is a difference between being able to experience “pain” and possessing the concept “pain”. Most would say true thought involves having the concept.
Many artists and scientists say they do not use words to solve problems, but images. The autistic (自闭症的) author Temple Grandin, in explaining how she thinks with images rather than in language, says that concepts for her are collections of images.
Of course, Grandin has language, and knows how to use it, so it is hard to say how much of her thinking has been influenced by it, but that there are people who are deficient in the ability to use language and think in the way she describes.
There is evidence that deaf people cut off from language possess the ability to think before being exposed to language. Also, the sign languages developed by deaf students without language models display the kind of thinking that goes far beyond mere sensory impression or practical problem solving.
However, while it appears that we can indeed think without language, there are certain kinds of thinking that are made possible by language. Language gives us symbols we can use to fix ideas, reflect on them, and hold them up for observation. It allows for a level of abstract reasoning we wouldn’t have otherwise. The philosopher Peter Carruthers has argued that there is a type of inner language thinking that allows us to bring our own thoughts into awareness. We may be able to think without language, but language lets us know we are thinking.
28.What does the author intend to show with the experience of Temple Grandin
A.People without language can’t think.
B.Language has no influence on thinking.
C.Some people may think in a non-language way.
D.Autistic people have a special way of using language.
29.Which of the following best explains “deficient” underlined in paragraph 4
A.Flexible. B.Lacking. C.Confident. D.Experienced.
30.What could we learn from the last paragraph
A.Language makes abstract reasoning easier.
B.Language is merely useful for reflection.
C.Language is a must for people to understand the world.
D.Language restricts people s ability to think visually.
31.The text is written mainly to __________.
A.Stress the importance of language in daily life.
B.Advocate the thinking modes of scientists and artists
C.Demonstrate the cognitive abilities of average individuals.
D.Show the relationship between thought and language.

On farms all over the country, even the most traditional ones, thought is being given to the possibilities of AI. For the moment, artificial intelligence isn’t making much of an impact on the daily lives of most British farmers. But the way AI can change agriculture in the near future is very much a reality in universities and research labs. My eyes were opened to the possibilities on a visit to a lab where cows were being automatically (自动化) monitored in an innovative ‘smart’ dairy. AI was learning to recognize each individual cow and keep a record of its behavior. It then analyzed the data to warn of any signs of illness.
Meanwhile, in my home county, work is underway to ensure that the upcoming generation of farmers isn’t left behind. In a few weeks’ time, newly arrived students at the Royal Agricultural University (RAU) will start their course in Agricultural Technology, at the heart of which is AI’s role in making farming more effective, productive and adaptive in a world of changing weather patterns. This would have sounded like science fiction in the 1950s, but now, 70 years on, I’m encouraged that tomorrow’s farmers are being armed with the know-how to succeed in the new digital age.
Naturally, there are concerns about what all this might mean for the countless number of people who depend on farming for their livelihood (生计). Soft fruit and seasonal vegetables are extremely tender and need an army of pickers and packers who may find themselves replaced at some point by the sort of standard precision-robots that have been trialled (试用) on a strawberry farm.
In recent years many places have struggled to employ and keep seasonal workers, so rather than create unemployment, AI might just provide the answer to a worrying labor gap. It’s worth saying that this technology will need a whole new set of workers to produce the hardware, input new data and then install (安装), maintain, repair and replace systems and kit. So don’t lose hope but do consider upskilling (技能提升).
Since the Industrial Revolution, every generation of farmers has had to deal with the technological changes of the day and they have successfully adapted to survive. Who knows! AI may well turn out to be just the latest in a long line of challenges to be accepted by adaptable and spirited farmers. And anything that saves me the worry of checking the weather forecast day and night during harvest season must be a good thing.
32.What did the author discover during his visit to the lab
A.AI has made automation a reality in the dairy industry.
B.AI has helped most British farmers to closely monitor cows.
C.AI is being developed to improve cow health through behavior analysis.
D.AI is primarily being used to change universities and labs across Britain.
33.What is the focus of the course in Agricultural Technology at the RAU
A.The role of traditional methods in increasing crop productivity.
B.The development of AI in agricultural practices in the UK.
C.The ways climate change affects global food security.
D.The impact of AI on improving farming efficiency and productivity.
34.What can be inferred about the introduction of AI in agriculture from the third and the fourth paragraphs
A.It will lead to widespread unemployment.
B.It may help address the labor shortage issue.
C.It will remove the need for human labor completely.
D.It doesn’t affect the nature of seasonal workers.
35.What is the author’s attitude towards the use of AI in agriculture
A.Optimistic. B.Distrustful. C.Doubtful. D.Concerned.

Ease the Sunday Scaries
Most of us look forward to the weekend as a time to relax, connect with friends and family, and deal with tasks from a to-do list that gets ignored during the workweek. But as the weekend comes to an end, many are missing out on Sunday fun and instead feeling a strong sense of anxiety and even fear about the upcoming week. 36 Some people describe it as a heavy feeling they can sense in their body, while others feel so upset that they can barely sit still.

39 Getting rid of Sunday scaries isn’t just about minimizing the blues of the week ahead. Have something to look forward to and this will shift your thoughts to fun things and help improve your mood.
End your Sunday with the right energy. Sunday night is a proper time to relax. Maybe you want to write in a journal, put on a face mask, or read a few pages of a good book. Do your best to honor this time and make Sunday night all about you. 40

Clara’s sketchbook (素描本) fell from her hands as her father’s loud voice filled the kitchen. “Stop this ‘artist’ dream and take the job at the law office! You think painting can pay for food and rent It’s just a hobby, not a real job!” Arthur Hale was sad and angry — he’d started his building business from nothing, and all he wanted was a stable (稳定的) life for his daughter. Their home was filled with useful things: full bookshelves, a strong dining table, and no sign of Clara’s messy paints or half-done paintings.
Clara’s heart hurt. “It’s not just a dream, Dad. Painting is what I’m meant to do! I got into the Royal College of Art — this is my big chance!” Since she’d said no to the law job and accepted the art school offer, they’d hardly spoken nicely to each other. Arthur grew up poor, working two part-time jobs to finish trade school; he couldn’t understand why his daughter would choose such an unsure path. “Artists often go hungry, Clara,” he’d say again and again, his voice getting harder. “I won’t watch you struggle like I did.”
That night, Clara packed her sketchbooks and paints and moved into a small room near the art school. Although she painted late every night, her hands always covered with paints, she faced one “no” from galleries after another. Money was tight — she often skipped lunch to buy more canvas and paints. But what she didn’t know was that Arthur had been watching.
He’d drive by her building after work, making sure her window light was on. One evening, he even left a bag of fresh fruit and her favorite apple pie outside her door. But as time flew, neither of them decided to say sorry first.

Dear Mike,
As the organizer of our class’s Romeo and Juliet play for the English Drama Festival, I’m reaching out for your help. We urgently need creative homemade props and Renaissance-style costumes but lack materials.
Knowing that you’re involved in the International Club’s drama activities, I wonder if you could lend us some items like fake swords, vintage cloaks, or suggest where to rent affordable costumes. Alternatively, if your club has spare resources, we’d deeply appreciate borrowing them for our performance.
Your support would mean a lot to us! Thank you in advance, and please feel free to suggest any other solutions. Looking forward to your reply.

After graduation, Clara held an art show successfully. It was a small but warm exhibition in a nice downtown gallery, filled with her paintings. Every brushstroke showed how hard she’d tried: the late nights she spent painting, and the hope that kept her going when galleries said no. Visitors stopped to look at her works, saying nice things about the “real feeling” in her pieces. By the end of the first day, three paintings had been sold, and a local art writer said her work was “true to herself”. Clara looked at the empty places on the walls, her heart feeling full. She knew there was one person she wanted to share this with.
Clara decided it was time to show her father her achievement. She printed a photo of her sold paintings and drove to his house. Her hands were a little shaky as she knocked. Arthur opened the door, and his eyes softened when he saw her. He took the photo, staring at the paintings for a long while. “I’m sorry I didn’t see how much this means to you,” he said gently. Clara hugged him tightly, tears warm on her cheeks. Love, she realized, isn’t about forcing a path, but about supporting someone’s dream — just as her father had done, quietly and steadily, all along.
