When we finally came to the safety of the riverbank, the cold was rapidly
creeping deep into my muscles. Then I felt a hand on my shoulder and
looked up into his smiling face. I gathered my wits and dry firewood, and
started a huge blaze. As I recounted my experience in the warmth of my
sleeping bag, I wondered if I’d have survived if it had not been for Nick
and his attitude.

A feeling of terror came over ten-year-old Chet, a chill deep down in his
bones. He had the idea that someone — or something — was watching him. And then he saw it — a large gray fin, slicing through the water like a knife. Chet dove toward the shore, pounding through the water, kicking with all his might. His feet touched the bottom. He was running now, looking over his shoulder. The shark was right behind him, its huge jaws wide open and its white dagger teeth gleaming in its blood-red mouth.

Isaiah bit on his lower lip, pushed down the sharp tip of the hook,
tugging it this way and that way until, finally, he set the loon free. I
patted the loon’s head, a gesture of gratitude that it hadn’t used its
beak as a weapon. As I set it down on the water, it flapped its wings
with a joyful flourish. Then, its eyes fixed unblinkingly on us, it rose
up and slapped its wings down hard on the surface of the lake. It seemed
to be saying, “Thank you. You saved me. I won’t soon forget.”

my aid. She was my only hope. Lying in the darkness, I tried to calm
my breathing and listened for any other sound from above. Time stood
still, until I heard her meow accompanied by hurried footsteps. My
husband was following Angelica to my side. Angelica, the courageous
kitten had saved my life.
