I have always enjoyed travelling. Having learned that my father was seriously ill, I immediately returned from London to care for him and spend precious time together. After he passed away, I felt an emptiness and longed to “be on the move” again.
In early 2023, I visited the Galapagos Islands for a much-needed break. On Floreana Island, I came across Post Office Bay, where a barrel (桶) has served as an informal postbox since 1793. It was first used by sailors to send mail back home: they would leave letters there, and other sailors finding mail addressed to their home ports would take and deliver it when they returned. Today, tourists keep the tradition alive.
The barrel was full of letters and postcards waiting for delivery. I brought home two postcards: one from a student to a teacher, and the other from a girl to her friend. The joy they brought to the recipients gave me great satisfaction and pleasure and planted an idea in my mind - to spend a year delivering such letters while keeping my remote job.
In March 2024, I returned to the Galapagos Islands and selected 55 letters addressed to people across seven continents. Relying mainly on the addresses, I lost my way sometimes and asked locals for help. Most people were shocked at first, but their surprise soon turned into smiles when they understood. There were challenges as well as touching moments. In Norway, a woman mistook my selfie (自拍照) stick for a weapon and called the police. In Belize, a love letter reached a man who had broken up with his partner — and they reunited weeks later. My favourite delivery was in Mexico City — it was a letter from a daughter to her ill mother, thanking her for encouraging her to follow her dreams.
The journey ended in March this year, but the desire to explore and connect continues to define my path forward.
4. What does the phrase “be on the move” refer to in the first paragraph
A. Begin a journey. B. Return to work. C. Take a break. D. Explore the unknown.
5. What is special about Post Office Bay
A. Sailors made it for contact. B. It serves tourists specifically.
C. It was inspired by a barrel. D. Everyone can be the postman.
6. What motivated the author to start his year-long letter delivery
A. Encounters with the recipients. B. Flexibility of his remote job.
C. Delight from his initial deliveries. D. Traditions of Post Office Bay.
7. Which can best describe the author’s delivery journey
A. Simple but heart-warming. B. Eventful but far-reaching.
C. Dangerous but life-changing. D. Expensive but eye-opening.

Many papers have been published on the cognitive (认知的) benefits of multilingualism (多语言能力). Beyond the conversational doors it can open, multilingualism is supposed to improve the ability to stay focused, plan complex tasks and adjust to new information. What is more striking is that some studies even suggest people who can speak more than one language equally well may experience cognitive decline about four years later than those who speak only one, though such claims, as researchers point out, are not always consistent.
The good news is that it is never too late to start learning a new language, but the biggest benefits seem to come to those who master their second language fully. A bit of university French does not, unfortunately, have the same advantages as deep knowledge and long experience. Switching languages constantly in the course of a day may be particularly important. Studies of bilingual (双语的) interpreters have provided some of the strongest evidence for this. For example, they are faster at repeatedly jumping back and forth between simple addition and subtraction problems, suggesting generally better cognitive control.
Bilinguals are not like those speaking only one language in lots of ways. The child raised in a foreign language abroad may have cognitive and educational advantages that have nothing to do with bilingualism. Yet studies have found striking evidence that in poorer parts of the world multilingual people show the strongest advantages of speaking several languages. Where schooling is short, bilingualism exercises children’s brains in a way that their schooling may not.
Ellen Bialystok of York University, in Canada, stated bilingualism is not a cure-all and compared it to a slice of holey cheese, for its cognitive protection is similar to the coverage of a piece of bread afforded by holey cheese. Doing other things that are good for the brain, such as exercise, is like putting the slices together. Their holes occur in different places, and thus collectively offer greater protection.
8. What is mainly discussed about multilingualism in the first paragraph
A. Its medical benefits. B. Expectations of it.
C. Arguments about it. D. Its multiple advantages.
9. What does the example of interpreters show
A. Barriers to cross-cultural interactions. B. The importance of frequent bilingual use.
C. Effects of bilingualism on multitasking. D. The link between languages and cognition.
10. Who is most affected by bilingualism
A. A teenager growing up abroad. B. A teenager having language gifts.
C. A student in an undeveloped area. D. A student receiving formal schooling.
11. Why is bilingualism compared to holey cheese
A. To prove its role is crucial. B. To show it boosts physical health.
C. To explain it is poorly studied. D. To illustrate its function is limited.
D
In the woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa, sometime deep in our species’ past, something strange happened: a bird called out, not to warn others of human presence, but to call attention to herself. Having found a beehive (蜂巢), that bird — a honeyguide — called out to human honey hunters, guiding them in exchange for a share of the rewards. The behavior can seem incredible: How would a bird come to think that people could do her a favor Isn’t life simply bloodier than that
As Rob Dunn argues in The Call of the Honeyguide, it isn’t. Nature is red in tooth and claw (爪), but in equal measure, life works together. Cells host even smaller life, wrapped in a web of interdependence. Ants might go to war, but they also tend mushrooms and even trees as a team. And we humans work not just with honeyguides but with crops and pets. These beneficial relationships might be the most important forces in the evolution of life.
Focusing on the complex relationships of interdependence and mutual benefit that connect different species in an ecosystem, Dunn reminds us that we are interlinked with the rest of nature, and that we need other species and they need us — a simple message that nevertheless “has become almost unconventional”, he says, “in the context of separation and distance from the living world” in contemporary society.
Our lives are shaped by technology, and urbanization has only grown. For instance, the average adult tends to be a homebody. Children prefer recognizing cartoon characters to identifying common wildlife species. At the same time, humans harm forests and other habitats, endangering many species.
We humans often act as though we are all alone, independent of the rest of life. As The Call of the Honeyguide shows, we are not. It is a call to action for a more beneficial, less lonely future.
12. What does the author think is strange
A. People and birds find honey together. B. A honeyguide asks people for help.
C. Honey hunters understand birds’ calls. D. A bird attracts humans successfully.
13. What phenomenon in nature is mainly described in paragraph 2
A. Humans rely on wildlife greatly. B. Various creatures live in conflict.
C. Life evolves in unexpected ways. D. Competition and cooperation coexist.
14 What does the author want to explain in paragraph 4
A Damages to various wildlife species. B. Children’s limited observations of nature.
C. Reasons for human-nature disconnection. D. Human’s overreliance on high technology.
15. What message is conveyed in The Call of the Honeyguide
A. No man is an island. B. There’s strength in numbers.
C. Let nature take its course. D. Everyone is in the same boat.

On a Friday afternoon, an unexpected topic arose in our classroom chatter. My classmate Lily said, “My mom’s birthday is next month. I’ve been saving to buy her a silk scarf — the one she hesitated to buy for herself.” Her words met with responses; others joined in, sharing plans and gifts. I hadn’t realized this Sunday was my mom’s birthday, and I had no idea what to prepare for her.
This year has been tough for our family. Dad is working far away in another country, so Mom has to carry everything on her shoulders. She rushes between her job and housework. I often saw her ironing clothes late at night, and many mornings she was already busy in the kitchen before the sun rose.
My younger brother, Milo, and I were not much help. At our age, too young to care about our family, we were busy with our own little battles, arguing about the TV remote, the best seat on the sofa, and even the last piece of pizza. He said I bossed him around; I thought he was careless. We rarely noticed how tired Mom was.
On Sunday morning, Mom had just started vacuuming (用真空吸尘器清扫) when her phone rang. “There’s an urgent problem at work. I’ll be back soon,” she said and then left in a rush. Suddenly the house felt strangely quiet and the vacuum cleaner was still lying on the floor. Milo and I exchanged awkward looks, not sure what to do.
Then my eyes fell on the calendar. My heart raced. I turned to Milo, who was reaching for his game controller. “Wait,” I said, my voice firmer than expected, “it’s Mom’s birthday today. We can’t let it pass like this.” He looked confused. “What should we do ” he asked. I looked around the living room, my eyes settling on the family photos on the wall, dusty and slightly askew (歪的), and the bookshelf, which was a mess. “Let’s give her a real gift — not just a clean house, but a renewed home,” I said, determined.

47. 范文
So our “Mom’s Birthday Mission” began. We put aside our differences and started working immediately. I grabbed the vacuum cleaner and cleaned the carpet thoroughly, moving the heavy furniture to get every last dust bunny. Meanwhile, Milo focused on the details. He carefully wiped the family photos on the wall until they shone and straightened them neatly. By late afternoon, the house looked brand new. To top it off, we pooled our pocket money to buy a small chocolate cake, which we placed on the table with a single candle.
When Mom came home, she stopped in the doorway in shocked silence. She looked around, taking in the spotless living room and the gleaming floor. Milo ran to hug her legs, while I shyly handed her a hand-drawn card. Mom’s eyes filled with tears as she saw the cake. “This is the best gift I’ve ever received,” she whispered. That night, as we ate cake together, the house felt warmer than ever. We finally realized that the greatest gift wasn’t something we bought, but the love and effort we put into making her happy.
